LANZAROTE 3 SPORTING GIJÓN B 3
19th October 2009
Los Rojillos showed superb character by at first clawing back a two goal deficit then finding a dramatic 93rd minute equalizer with only 10 men.
Lanzarote displayed their fighting spirit in a highly entertaining six goal thriller. The Primera Liga’s B team was only seconds away from victory which would have pushed them up to second place in the league table.
Lanzarote began the match looking far the more positive side and big front man Rosmen came close with a header in the 5th minute and only two minutes later had a glorious chance to open his goal scoring account for the season but from seven yards goalkeeper Dani Lavianna saved well with his feet.
In the 17th minute a good cross swung in from the right by Rosmen was well read by Toñito who controlled the ball instantly and unleashed a drive heading for the right hand corner but a last gasp block by a defender prevented the Rojillos from taking a deserved lead.Typically, with chances not been taken Sporting Gijón punished Lanzarote to the full. In the 19th minute a free kick dangerously swung in from the left wing was not dealt with by the defence or claimed by the goalkeeper and at the far post striker Portilla chested his side into a 0-1 lead.
Ten minutes later and Lanzarote were in free fall. A clearance by Gijón’s keeper caught Lanzarote’s centre backs dreaming and winger Jorge neatly chipped Lanzarote’s keeper Ruymán to make the score 0-2 and left Lanzarote with another mountain to climb.
Four minutes before the break and midfielder Rúben Rodriguez turned his defender and was tripped giving Lanzarote a penalty. The same player took the spot kick and fiercely drove the ball low into the right hand corner reducing the score 1-2 and giving his side a lifeline to take into the half time break.
Manager Carmelo Hernández brought on Englishman Ian Robinson to add to his attacking force a minute into the second half and Lanzarote began to dominate possession. Sporting still looked dangerous on the counter and a great run by winger Jorge who fired in a low, hard cross and was only inches away from finding his strike partner Pablo Acebal.
In the 54th minute good work from right back Kamara and the ever alert Toñito who produced a stunning cross in which Rosmen rose tallest and powerfully headed into the roof of the net leveling the scores at two apiece.
Only five minutes later and with the Rojillos in top gear, defender Kamara received a straight red card for causes unknown and again Lanzarote were forced to play the final half hour in scorching heat and a cloudless sky with only 10 men. The unfortunate Englishman had to be sacrificed after only 15 minutes as defender Francis replaced Kamara.
Both teams still went in search of the full three points. In the 66th minute Rojillos defender Santi Torres headed off the line and Lanzarote´s inspirational Captain Vladi who does not understand the meaning of defeat was chasing, tackling and creating the best chances for the home side.
Three minutes from time and Sporting scored what they believed to be the winner. A long ball was tidily chested down by sub Landeira and in one movement guided the ball out of the reach of Ruymán and into the bottom left hand corner.
Deep into stoppage time and a long ball was hoisted into the corner of the box, Rosmen nodded the ball over to the far post and Vladi on the sprint, got that all important toe onto the ball steering it into the back of the net to give his side their first point in eight matches.
It may only be a point but the heart and guts showed by an under pressure side was there for all to see. Vladamir was exceptional and it seems a crime that he is not playing his football at a higher level. Toñito and Rúben both gave 100 per cent and striker Rosmen put in his best performance wearing a Lanzarote shirt. Next week Lanzarote travel and face the B side of Tenerife.
