As you know, we are following FC St Pauli this season. We have struggled to find a name for the feature, last week we had ‘The Boys from St Pauli’. OK, but no cigar. This week the guys have found the match report from our friends on SoccerNet.com. The plan had been that they watch the match on ESPN and provide us with their own report, but oh no. During our rather amusing conversation last night, when they couldn’t remember which pub they were in, could just about remember their names, I had the inspiration, why not title the feature after their nicknames. So welcome to Kult & Punk.
Cologne 1 FC St Pauli 0
Taner Yalcin's first senior goal earned Cologne all three points at home to St Pauli.
The goal came in the 17th minute from the first decent chance either team had enjoyed.
Lukas Podolski smacked a thunderbolt of a shot from 30 yards that came back off the crossbar, and Yalcin was there for an easy finish into the unguarded net.
Cologne continued to dominate and might have added more before half-time.
St Pauli goalkeeper Thomas Kessler twice denied Christian Clements, first keeping out his header before getting hands to a shot from the edge of the area.
Podolski then got another sight of goal but his shot from the left went just over the crossbar.
St Pauli had to wait until the second half to get a look at goal and even then they could not find the target as Bastian Oczipka's shot from long range went over.
However, the visitors were a much-improved team in the second half and they were soon on the attack again with Florian Burns firing just wide from a good position.
At the other end, Podolski's luck was not improving as the Germany forward attempted a fine lob which looked to have beaten Kessler before he scrambled back to get fingertips on the ball and keep it out for a corner.
St Pauli almost snatched a point deep in injury time but Marius Ebbers headed over the bar from close range.
