The latest offering from our friends at Lake County Captains.
Michael Goodnight was dazzling on Tuesday morning as the Captains defeated the Lansing Lugnuts 2-1. Goodnight struck out a career high ten batters in six innings and combined with the Dale Dickerson and Clayton Elhert to throw a one hitter.
The Lugnuts scored their only run in the bottom of the first inning against Goodnight. A leadoff walk on four straight balls to Jonathon Jones and a wild pitch moved him over to second. Goodnight struck out the next two hitters but gave up a two out single to left center to K.C. Hobson giving the Nuts a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Captains coaxed back to back walks from Alex Lavisky and Argenis Martinez to lead off the frame. Nick Bartolone reached on an error on the catcher as he was trying to lay down a sacrifice bunt. That loaded the bases. Carlos Moncrief chopped the next pitch in the grass in front of the mound and it was misplayed by Egan Smith the starting pitcher for Lansing allowing Lavisky to score to tie the game and keeping the bases loaded. Tyler Cannon slapped a line drive single into right field driving in Martinez to make it 2-1 Captains.
Goodnight entered the bottom of the fifth inning with seven strike outs and struck out the side to bring his total to ten.
Goodnight (2-2) picked up the win for Lake County. Dickerson threw two scoreless innings walking one. Clayton Ehlert pitched a perfect ninth striking out one for his seventh save. Smith (2-2) took the loss for Lansing tossing six innings allowing two runs, one of them earned on seven hits, walking two and striking out five.
