Hoop Zone: Barking Abbey Women and Men both win.

Barking Abbey Senior Women opened the Division 1 regular season with a 55-37 win over Sevenoaks Suns on Saturday evening in Sevenoaks.

“Pleased to get the ‘W’,” said head coach Mark Clark after the game. “It is always a difficult place to win. We shot the ball well and I am pleased with our defensive execution.”

Clark pointed to 1997 born Shanice Norton’s performance, describing it as “exciting” as she finished with 11 points. Georgia Jones had 22 to lead BA whilst veteran Ros Mason finished with 10 points.

BA will continue the regular season against Manchester Mystics on November 10, in Manchester.

As for the men:

Barking Abbey moved to 2-0 in the Division 4 regular season on Saturday, with an impressive 69-53 win over Greenwich Titans.

“We played with an tremendous amount of energy tonight,” said an extremely pleased head coach Frank Holloway after the game. “Everyone played well against a well balanced, more experienced team in Greenwich. We attacked the glass on both ends of the floor, shot well from the field, and made our free-throws. I couldn’t be happier with this group of young men.”

David Akibo led BA with 15 points, whilst Jefferson Davis added 12, and Paulius Satkus finished with 10.
Practice appears to be paying off for the young team, as Holloway feels there is no cap on what they can achieve this season. “I told our players after the game, if you continue to play this hard, and keep sharing the ball like you did, the skies the limit on what you can achieve,” he added.

The team will now face Ware Rebels away on October 28 (3.00pm BST tip off at Wodson Park Sports Centre).
