HULL Wasps got off to a flying start to their National League division four north campaign, winning 93-47 against a poor Liverpool side.
Once again, Hull raced from the blocks in their second straight 46-point win. They allowed the hosts just four field goals in the first quarter, all from long distance as the shot clock ran down.
The Wasps hit 23 points of their own in the opening period to establish a lead they would never surrender.
They tore into Liverpool’s man-to-man defence, hitting shots from near and far as guard Ashley Rice came off the bench to collect eight of his 10 points in the quarter, including two of Hull’s eight three-pointers.
Fellow guard Adrian Blatherwick, who scored 16 points, took over in the second period, hitting three long-rangers as the visitors showed impressive passing to find the open man time and time again.
Player-coach John Brignell got in on the act from behind the arc, hitting his first three-pointer of the season as part of a team-leading 17 points.
Into the second half and Hull clamped down on a Liverpool offence that had finally got out of first gear as Brignell switched his side into a zone defence that allowed the hosts just nine points in the third quarter.
Captain Jamie Goodwin continued the Wasps’ impressive outside shooting with another three-pointer. The forward hit eight of his 14 points in the third quarter as point guard John Kelsey added six of his 12 points in the period.
With the win in the bag, Hull took their feet off the accelerator in the fourth quarter, failing to score 20 points in a period for the first time in the game.
Centre James Rayner added eight points, Forward Miles Anderson scored with six, guards Matt Fawcett and Andrew Marr hit four each and forward Rob Birchmore chipped in with three in a balanced attack from Hull.
Goodwin, the club’s assistant coach, said: “We played well enough, but probably didn’t learn a lot about what level we have reached just yet.
“Liverpool were missing some players from last season who have yet to return to the city for university, which meant it was difficult to maintain a high tempo against a side that didn’t offer much resistance.
“But it was a professional job that we are happy with.”
The Wasps’ next game sees them travel to Durham Wildcats II on Sunday, October 17.
Their National Shield second round game against Durham has been postponed. The game was due to take place at the Bonus Arena in Walton Street, west Hull, on Sunday, October 24.
