Rebels 2: Rebels bid farewell to a legend
Thank you to the Rebels Media Team for providing the post and picture.
The RaboDirect Rebels gave their all on an emotional night at AAMI Park, but sadly there was to be no fairytale result for departing captain Stirling Mortlock as the Reds ran out 32-17 winners.
The Rebels matched the champions for endeavour throughout, but for all the chances they created in the opening period they just couldn’t put points on the board. The visitors wasted none of their opportunities, however, capitalising on the hosts’ set piece errors to score two of their three first-half tries.
Two converted scores from the Rebels in the second half gave the 14,110-strong crowd hope of a comeback, but a late try gave the Reds their bonus point and sealed the win.
Mortlock was proud of his team’s effort against strong opposition, and hinted that despite struggling with injury he would still be around to lead the Rebels when they head to South Africa next week.
“I would have loved for us to continue on with that momentum we had in the second half, but the Reds are a quality team and they showed that when they shut down the game, maintained possession and put us under pressure, and then eventually got some points with that try,” said Mortlock.
“We’ve got two decent games to go – the Lions and then the Stormers. That’s going to be a significant challenge for us. We haven’t got a win yet in South Africa, so we’ve got to focus on that, and likewise so do I.”
The Rebels survived an early assault from the visitors, before working their way back down into Reds’ territory with some sublime offloading to break the defensive line. Their handling skills and strong running almost took them over for five points, but Tom Chamberlain was held just short and the ball was fumbled as the forward runners tried to punch their way through.
They worked another great opportunity soon after, as quick hands released Mark Gerrard down the right flank. Jono Owen tried to squirm his way over from a ruck a few feet short of the tryline, but Quade Cooper managed to hold the ball up over the whitewash with a desperate last-ditch tackle.
The referee was playing an advantage to the Rebels, however, and James O’Connor coolly slotted the penalty from wide on the right to give his side the lead.
It didn’t take long for the Reds to strike back however, as an overthrow from a Rebels lineout close to their own line created a golden opportunity. It was a simple case of drawing and passing for the Reds backline, setting up young winger Chris F’Sautia to cross in the corner. The successful conversion from Mike Harris, along with an easy penalty soon after, put his side ahead 10-3.
Another set-piece turnover proved costly for the Rebels, when the ball was lost at an attacking scrum. Genia quickly spread the ball to Harris, who chipped and regathered before more slick passing allowed Dom Shipperly to score. Once again Harris was on target, taking the Reds’ lead out to 17-3.
The Rebels were determined to prevent the finals contenders from getting up a head of steam, with captain Mortlock putting in several thundering hits to mark the occasion. Their efforts in defence were brave as the Reds battered their tryline, but they couldn’t stop a wonderful offload out of the tackle from Cooper, which put lock Adam Wallace-Harrison in to score untouched. Another simple conversion for Harris made it 24-3 to the Reds just before half-time.
The loss of Mortlock at the break, along with O’Connor to a hamstring strain shortly afterwards, forced a reshuffle in the Rebels’ backline, with Beale stepping into the fly-half role, Lachie Mitchell coming on at centre, and Julian Huxley taking to the field at full-back.
Despite the disruption, the Rebels started the second half brightly. A mesmerising run from Beale created a hole for Cooper Vuna, and as the Reds desperately brought him down space opened up for the Rebels on the right hand side. Beale managed to fire a hurried pass out to his support as the scramble defence pressed up, but agonisingly it evaded all Melbourne attackers.
They continued attacking relentlessly however, with Vuna looking dangerous when given space. The Wallaby winger sparked another assault on the Reds’ line, and after his teammates had broken down a gutsy defence Beale stepped inside a drifting defender to dive over under the posts. His conversion brought the score back to 27-10 with just under half an hour to play.
The Rebels created several more chances as the half wore on, and eventually a strong, evasive run from flanker Hugh Perrett broke the Reds’ defensive line and opened up space for Mitchell to score after some quick handling from his team-mates. Beale had no trouble with the conversion from the right-hand side, narrowing the gap to ten points as the game entered its final 10 minutes.
The Reds lifted again as the clock threatened to deny them the bonus point they so desperately needed, and after a sustained period of attack they were rewarded when replacement Nick Frisby dived over in the corner for his side’s fourth try.
A Rebels comeback seemed unlikely, but the players ignored both the clock and the scoreboard and attacked til the last. Huxley sped through towards the line, and Gerrard was bundled into touch inches short of the line, before the buzzer brought an end to a brave game from the Rebels on a memorable evening at AAMI Park.
LDN 12: King still reigns
Post taking in full, with thanks, from Team GB and provided by the Press Association.
Wiltshire rider Kitty King maintained her overnight lead in the Barbury International Horse Trials feature class on Friday.
King went top of the CIC three-star leaderboard with a dressage score of 43.6 penalties on Zidante.
And with just under 30 combinations of a 110-strong field still left to go before the weekend's showjumping and cross-country phases, it was proving a difficult performance to match.
Great Britain international Pippa Funnell went closest of the morning starters, posting 45.6 with Or Noir de la Loge that saw her climb into fifth place.
But although fellow Brit Mary King and Imperial Cavalier recorded a solid mark of 49.2, it was only good enough for 17th spot. King's Olympic colleague Tina Cook was among the late afternoon contenders.
Laura Collett, a top-10 finisher at Badminton last year, won two of the day's novice classes on Brookfield Cult King and Longbarn Maisie, while there was also a success for Australian rider Christopher Burton with Graf Liberty.

Firkin & Stumps: News from Dry Driffield
Hello and welcome, at last, to Firkin and Stumps. The feature that hopes to highlight all the fun of club cricket in the UK. We trawled through local newspapers throughout the country and found this. Bearing in mind the deluge the nation has experienced in place of summer, we found the driest place in England, Driffield Town. If you would like your club featured in this section, please send match reports and brief history of your club to sportspulse@sporttrades.co.uk
Article from the Yorkshire Post, 25th June
TRY telling Driffield Town the season has been a washout. They are the only team to complete all 11 league matches so far, enjoying remarkably good fortune with the weather.
While three of their rivals – Hull, Sheffield Collegiate and champions York – have had their last three games rained off, Driffield have played on and they won by six wickets at Cleethorpes on Saturday to climb into fourth place.
Once again, Aamir Sajjad was Driffield’s most impressive batsman with an undefeated 87 off 108 balls, his innings containing nine fours and two sixes.
The Pakistan A batsman, who has hit four centuries this season, shared a third-wicket partnership of 103 with Ben Cadmore, who finished with 39.
Cleethorpes, who were put in to bat, totalled 162-6 in their 55 overs, Charlie Tomlinson going in at No 5 and scoring 45 on his return to the side. Opener Bill Kirby made a patient 32 in 101 minutes and Nick Hardgrave took 3-46 in 16 overs for Driffield.
Second-placed Rotherham moved to within six points of leaders Harrogate, whose home fixture against York was one of the casualties of the weather. Rotherham defeated visitors Sheffield United by 74 runs, picking up six points as Sheffield’s last-wicket pair refused to be parted.
Put in to bat, Rotherham declared at 188-7 in the 46th over. Captain James Moorehouse and Gurman Randhawa had an opening stand worth 67, Moorhouse suffering a run-out just one short of his 50. Young medium pacer Tom Bolland had an impressive 4-21 in 4.3 overs.
Rotherham seamer Archie Odgen took three wickets and ran out James Martin as United were restricted to 114-9, opener Mark Cummins top-scoring with 29.
Doncaster made bold attempts to stage their derby against Barnsley at Town Fields but, after electing to bat and twice being interrupted by rain, they succumbed to the weather having reached 33 -0 in 19 overs. Graham Cox and Felix Odell were left unbeaten on 14 and 12, respectively.
Barnsley, who began the day level on points with Rotherham, now trail them by three points.

LDN12: Tomlinson inspired by Aldama
Post and photo courtesy of Team GB and copyright of the Press Association.
Chris Tomlinson has been inspired by training partner Yamile Aldama's achievements as he targets European and Olympic long jump glory.
Tomlinson finished fifth in the Olympics in Athens in 2004 but failed to make the final in Beijing four years later and has struggled to showcase his talent on the world stage. But the 30-year-old from Middlesbrough is aiming to follow in the footsteps of Aldama this summer after the 39-year-old mother of two won the world indoor triple jump title in Istanbul in March.
"I've been training with her for nearly four years so I've had that experience to feed off and there is no doubt she is a very knowledgeable triple jumper," Tomlinson said ahead of this week's European Athletics Championships in Helsinki.
"She's 40 in August and has been a world-class athlete for nigh-on 20 years which is an achievement in itself. As a whole I've learnt from that, but what the world indoors did was a simple 'If she can do it, why can't I do it?'
"She came back as world indoor champion and she's 39. So why can't I be Olympic champion?
"If someone had said a year and a half ago, when her son Diego was born, she's going to be world indoor champion, one of the favourites for Olympic gold, everyone would have laughed.
"But she has shown you can do whatever if you believe in it. So much of this sport is belief.
"British athletes now are starting to believe, we are seeing more athletes come out of the woodwork and across the board we are at a competitive level and can bring back a lot of medals (from the London Games).
"A lot of that comes from belief."

Tapes Up: Diamonds Complete League Cup Double Over Redcar And Make Semi Finals
Thanks to George English and the Newcastle Diamonds Media team, for the post and photo.
Newcastle Diamonds 57
Redcar Bears 35
League CupTop Scorers
Newcastle Diamonds - Richie Worrall 13 1, Mark Lemon 11 1
Redcar Bears - Aaron Summers 10, Ulrich Ostergaard 9 1
The Newcastle Diamonds needed to win the League Cup meeting last night at Brough Park to progress to the Semi Finals of the competition and managed the task in fine style with a 22-point victory over Redcar.
The home side got off to a flying start with a huge win for Stuart Robson in Heat One, although Claes Nedermark in second went way too wide on bend two of the last lap to lose a point in the eventual 4-2.
The Worrall twins hammered home a solid reserve heat 5-1 whilst in Heat Three skipper Mark Lemon and Christian Henry easily shrugged off the challenge of both Aaron Summers and Justin Sedgmen in another home maximum taking the score to 14-4.
With Ulrich Ostergaard on a tactical ride for double points in Heat Five the urgency got to several of the riders, but it was Lemon who moved too soon and touched the tapes for and exclusion with Richie Worrall coming in to take his place in the re-run which he won by a huge margin, but the tactical man was stuck in third for a single point in another Newcastle 5-1.
A second tactical ride for the Bears came in Heat Seven for Aaron Summers in an attempt to quell the rampant Diamond, but despite a superb pass of
Ludvig Lindgren coming off bend four on the opening lap the double-pointed Bear could not dent the excellent ride from Steve Worrall who took a superb win in a 4-4 result with the score now a dominant 30-14.
Carl Wilkinson proved he's a never-say-die rider, having scored two ducks, opened up his throttle wide on bend two to shoot round the entire field in Heat Eight to take a superb win hotly pursued by Richie Worrall in the shared 3-3.
Lindgren, mounted on a brand new engine, jetted away to take a big win in Heat 11 whilst Ostergaard and Wilkinson rode a wild rodeo of a race behind to scissor their way round Steve Worrall on lap two in the shared 3-3 which moved the score on to 45-23.
The semi final place was sealed after a scorching Heat 12 5-1 to the high flying Richie Worrall and Lemon over Justin Sedgmen which took the match to an unassailable 50-24 with three races left on the card.
Team manager George English said: "We've really have hit top-form as a team and that's shown in both our matches this week against the Bears to get into the League Cup semi final, and now we must concentrate on replicating this form in next week's knockout cup quarter final with Sheffield and then the League beyond that, and as we're still sitting pretty in 1st place to date we will really be focussing in on that goal."

Bradford Bulls go into administration
Post taken in full from our friends at BBC Sport
Bradford Bulls have entered administration, with the administrators claiming they have just 10 days to save the club from liquidation.
The Bulls announced in March that they needed £1m to stay in business.
Joint-administrator Brendan Guilfoyle said: "We have just 10 working days to save the club from liquidation because there are no funds to carry on longer.
"If anyone is interested in buying the Bulls then we need to hear from them right now."
He added: "This famous club is now on the brink of extinction.
"The directors made every effort to try to save the club within the 14-day timescale issued by the courts, but the moratorium ended on Monday without any potential buyer coming forward."
On 14 June it was revealed that the club could be forced to go into administration after being served with a winding-up petition by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs over unpaid tax.
Bradford shocked the rugby league world in March when they announced that they needed to raise £1m to stay afloat after an impending tax bill and a changed banking lending arrangement left them short of money.
Having asked supporters to pledge £100 and carrying out a number of fundraising activities they were able to raise their initial target of £500,000.
Attempts to pull in further investments were unsuccessful and chairman Peter Hood stepped down last month after a series of disagreements with majority shareholder Chris Caisley.
Director Stephen Coulby admitted the club were at serious risk of going into administration at the start of June.
The Bulls become the third Super League side in three seasons to enter administration after Yorkshire rivals Wakefield faced similar difficulties last year. and Welsh outfit Crusaders in 2010.
Crusaders were then liquidated in 2011, with Widnes Vikings taking their place in Super League.
A points deduction is likely to scupper their play-off bid, as they currently sit in ninth position - outside the play-off places on points difference only.
Current Super League licences are not up for renewal again until 2014 so the Bulls' place in the elite of the sport should be safe, assuming they can sort out their financial problems.

LDN 12: Basketball,GB defeated by Czechs
Thank you to TeamGB and Reuters for post and photo.
Great Britain's women's basketball team have lost the opening game of their two-match series against the Czech Republic 67-56 in Prague.
Having been well behind for most of the match, Team GB moved to within three points of their high-ranked opponents midway through the third quarter only to lose ground again thereafter.
Jo Leedham led the scoring with 13 points and Rose Anderson weighed in with 10 points and four rebounds in just 13 minutes on court.
British Basketball performance director Chris Spice told www.gbbasketball.com: "We competed really well with a world-class team, used our bench and everyone played some good minutes.
"We gave a lot of good minutes to the youngsters and they held up very well against quality opposition.
"The first quarter we were slow to start and didn't really recover from then but we pushed them all the way, so we're very pleased with a good work-rate and good effort by everyone."
Guard Natalie Stafford found plenty of positives going into Wednesday''s second match between the sides.

"We're looking forward to the game tomorrow," she said. "We've realised we can hang with them and give them a run for their money, so it will be a much better performance tomorrow.
"We gave them a run for their money and got things going defensively."

Top flight basketball returns to the Capital, East London Royals
Those of our regular visitors may remember a Big in East London post a while back. Well here is the full press release from the BBL. East London Royals are bringing top flight basketball back to the capital. Contact info@sporttrades.co.uk for all sponsorship and commercial opportunities that are available at the club.
The BBL is delighted to announce that the Manchester Giants and East London Royals have joined their ranks ahead of the 2012/13 season.
The Royals will be bringing top flight basketball back to the Capital and are owned by a group with in-depth experience of basketball throughout the UK, Europe and the USA. They will be based at the impressive Sporthouse, in Mayesbrook Park, Dagenham which boasts a capcity of up to 4,000.
Royals Director Mark Clark said "We are very excited at joining the BBL at a great time for the sport in the UK. The BBL has gained great exposure over the last two seasons and the Olympic Games will give the sport huge coverage. With our involvement in the local GB Regional Basketball Institute we hope the BBL team will also provide a pathway for the cream of the Institute players.”
The Giants Franchise have been developed over the last 18 months and has been established firmly with the ethos of building a successful, sustainable, community based organisation off the court. On the court, the Giants will be overseen by experienced Head Coach Jeff Jones and will be based at the Wright Robinson Sports College in the East of Manchester .
Jones said: “I am absolutely delighted to be back coaching the Manchester Giants – it has been a long term ambition of mine to bring a professional basketball franchise back to Manchester and we’re aiming to hit the ground running and introduce a competitive team to the league, with a good balance of home grown talent with more experienced players.”
Giants Chief Executive, Steve Mansfield added: “We are delighted that we have been able to resurrect such an iconic Manchester sports brand as the Manchester Giants. It has taken a lot of hard work to get to this stage but we are only a months away from the first match of the new season and a new era for basketball in Manchester and a new force in the BBL.”
BBL Chairman Paul Blake enthused “We are delighted to welcome two new clubs to the BBL next season and are particularly pleased that the location of the new clubs map our own Franchise Development Plan, including a team in one of the Olympic Boroughs. We wish them every success both off and on the court”.
Whilst continuing to grow their local community activities, a short term delay with their venue build has meant that the new Birmingham franchise will now not commence BBL competitions until the 2013/14 season.
Mark Walker, Managing Partner of Oaks Consultancy and franchise owner of BBL Birmingham, reiterated the club's commitment to the team and the community in the following statement:
"Oaks acquired the Birmingham franchise with the intention of entering a team in the 2012/13 season, but unfortunately for us and the city of Birmingham, this is now no longer possible due to unforeseen venue complications. However, we are confident that our new home venue at the Futsal International Arena Birmingham will be completed well in advance of the start of the 2013/14 season when we look forward to hosting our first competitive BBL game.
In the meantime however, our community programme is now well established and proving a great success, continuing to grow at an impressive rate. As this was an integral part of our overall objectives when we first took over the franchise, we are delighted with the impact we're having within the local community and will endeavour to continue to grow this side of the club as a fundamental component of the team's activities once we are fully up and running next season."
The BBL will make 2012/13 fixture format announcements in the coming weeks.

Surrey Cricketer Tom Maynard has died aged just 23
Story taken in full from our friends at the Guardian. We would like to add our thoughts and prayers, to the many tributes already received, to Tom's family and friends. Firkin and Stumps, our cricket feature, will now not be posted until next week as a mark of respect.
Tom Maynard, the son of the former England player and coach Matthew who was regarded as one of the game's most exciting young players in his own right, has died at the age of 23 after being struck by a London Underground train in the early hours of Monday morning after being chased by police.
The Metropolitan police issued a statement confirming that Maynard's black Mercedes had been stopped at approximately 04.15am after it was seen being driven erratically. He got out on foot, and around an hour later his body was found on the tracks near Wimbledon Park station. The Met statement also confirmed that the Director of Standards and the Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed.
Maynard, who was born in Cardiff, joined Surrey from Glamorgan last season, and was selected for the England Lions last winter. Surrey have postponed their Twenty20 fixture against Hampshire that was due to be played at The Oval on Wednesday as a mark of respect, and England and West Indies cancelled the press conferences at the ground that had been scheduled for Monday ahead of Tuesday's one-day international between the teams – although the game will go ahead as planned.
Richard Thompson, the Surrey chairman, said: "Our thoughts at this awful time are with Tom's family and friends. Tom Maynard was a prodigiously talented young batsman who had made an incredible start to his career and was clearly destined for far greater things. The impact Tom made in such a short period of time for Surrey CCC spoke for itself. There is a profound sense of loss at the passing of Tom. To lose anybody at such a young age is an utterly senseless tragedy."
The chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, Giles Clarke, said: "This is a very sad day for everyone connected with Surrey and Glamorgan where Tom spent the early part of his career. Tom was a player of enormous potential who had already represented England Lions and had an exciting future ahead of him. Our hearts go out to the Maynard family for their tragic loss and we send them and all Tom's many friends and colleagues within the game our deepest sympathies."
Matthew Maynard has been coaching and living in South Africa since leaving Glamorgan at the end of the 2010 season, months before his son.
Tom had played for Surrey in a Twenty20 match against Kent at Beckenham on Sunday afternoon. British Transport Police issued a statement confirming that he had been struck by a District Line train near Wimbledon Park station.
"The incident was reported to BTP at 05.03am and was also attended by Metropolitan police officers. London Ambulance Service medics attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident was reported to BTP at 05.03am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious."
The England players were told of Maynard's death as they arrived at The Oval for practice and Steve James, a former Glamorgan captain and a close friend of Matthew Maynard's, summed up the shock around cricket when he tweeted: "The lovely kid who was always in our Glamorgan dressing room grew into a man who would have played for England. How can he be gone so soon?"
Several others in the game have also expressed their shock on Twitter. Mark Ramprakash, Maynard's team-mate at Surrey, said: "Life can b so cruel! Tom Maynard – a really nice guy who was a pleasure to play with & will b really missed. RIP Tom."
The former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff tweeted: "Tragic news that a great lad, Tom Maynard is no longer with us. All my thoughts are with his family at this awful time x x," while the former England captain Michael Vaughan wrote: "Thoughts are with Matt Maynard and his family.. Words can't describe the Terribly sad news that Tom Maynard has died aged 23... #RIPTOM."
Hugh Morris, a former Glamorgan team-mate of Matthew Maynard who is now the managing director of England cricket, said: "It's an absolute tragedy. I've known Tom since he was a little boy, and our thoughts go out to Sue and Matthew - his parents - and all his friends and family. Tom was an incredibly talented cricketer but he was an incredibly likeable young man as well who had the world at his feet.
"In many respects he played just like his old man did. Matthew played for England and Tom was very much on that pathway. He played for the Lions last winter and impressed all the coaches there. To have his life cut short in this way is an absolute tragedy. It's a very difficult time for everybody."
England have called the Warwickshire all-rounder Chris Woakes into their squad for the remaining two matches of the one-day series as cover in case Maynard's Surrey team-mate Jade Dernbach is unavailable on compassionate grounds.

Tapes Up: Diamonds Remind Lions Who Is Top Of The Premier League
Thank you to George English and the Media Team at Newcastle Diamonds for providing the following post and picture.
Newcastle Diamonds 62
Leicester Lions 31
Premier League
Top Scorers
Newcastle - Richie Worrall 13 2, Mark Lemon 11 3
Leicester Lions - Lasse Bjerre 12, Kauko Nieminen 9
Young Richie Worrall is fast becoming the star of 2012 in the Newcastle Diamonds Premier League-topping side and last night against second placed Leicester Lions scored his first paid maximum of the season in the decisive 31-point win.
It was a very one-sided affair with Newcastle taking 10 wins in the 15 races whilst the Lions themselves proved somewhat uneven as their top two, Lasse Bjerre and Kauko Nieminen scoring 21 of their overall total with the other five of their side looking decidedly disappointing.
Heat One saw Stuart Robson make a slow gate but haul himself back round Simon Lambert on the first bend as Claes Nedermark pushed Magnus Karlsson wide allowing Robson to cut back and sharply nip through a tiny gap between Newcastle's Dane and Karlsson to form a Diamonds' 5-1 in crowd thrilling style.
Two wins for super-sub Richie Worrall in the second and fourth races, both by a country mile formed Newcastle 4-2s, separated by another excellent 5-1 in Heat Three from Mark Lemon and Christian Henry meant that the Diamonds were already dominating 18-6 which led to a tactical ride for Karlsson.
The Diamonds pair of Henry and Lemon, this time on his second bike as his first had a fault, made Karlsson work hard by jumping out to take another 5-1 negating Karlsson's double point effort with Newcastle now 23-7 up.
Bjerre, brother of former Diamond Kenneth, raced a superb Heat Six when with half a lap to go he wound on the power and forced his way round Nedermark and Robson the run to the line in the first 3-3 of the night and with a Nieminen win in the seventh another 3-3 was put into the record book.
Nedermark and Richie Worrall got the Diamonds back into maximum vein with another 5-1 in Heat Eight and with the score now 34-14 and then 37-17 after the ninth the Lions manager, former Diamond's rider Glyn Taylor put Nieminen on a tactical ride for double points in Heat 10.
The tactical man roared away to win for six points, but chasing behind Robson lost his steel shoe which he had not noticed until on the third bend he fell as his foot effectively stuck to the track half a lap later and had to nurse himself home at half speed in the 2-7 advantage to the Lions which progressed the score to 39-24.
A Lindgren and Steve Worrall took the match well beyond Leicester's reach with four races to go as the Diamonds relished their revenge as they comfortably consolidated their position on top of the Premier League.
Team manager George English said: "Richie's form is sky-rocketing at the moment and it's a great help to have this sort of power at reserve, but when our main lads also hit form then the opposition need to watch out as Leicester found out to their determent tonight.
"We had revenge on our mind after they narrowly beat us 46-44 down there last month and I think we comfortably achieved our goal. This was another dominant - total team performance and it helps us stay well clear at the top of the League which is where we aim to stay throughout the second half of the season.
"I have to congratulate Lasse Bjerre however for giving us some great entertainment to match the rest of our lads, all of whom were at least paid for a win. That good win sets us up nicely at the top of the League table."

England band refused entry from Euro 2012 match against France
Thank you to our friends at Telegraph Sport for the following post.
England's sponsors Pukka Pies are to make an official protest to Uefa after the musicians were refused entry into the Donbass Arena in Ukraine.
Monday night was the first time they have been refused entry to a game and no reason was given for the decision. Their instruments were returned after the final whistle. The band have been a feature of England matches since 1996 and, having secured assurances from both the FA and Uefa, were expecting to be in their usual positions at Monday night's Group D opener with France in Donetsk.
After an initial problem, the 10 members did get to their seats, only for local security staff to step in and tell them their instruments broke ground regulations and were being confiscated for the duration of the game.
Although they were returned immediately after the final whistle and protests have been made, it is not known whether the rules will be relaxed for Friday's encounter with Sweden in Kiev, or when they return to Donetsk next Tuesday for a potential qualification decider with hosts Ukraine.
Monday night's events were even more galling because, sponsored by Pukka Pies, the band had driven to Donetsk from the UK, a journey of approximately 2,800 miles.
Not every England fan, however, wants the band back, with #bantheband trending on Twitter. What do you think, though? Should the England band, who have been a feature of Three Lions games for the past two decades and estimate they have been present for over 300 consecutive matches, be allowed back?

LDN 12: Fogg beats Davies in Portugal
Thank You to Team GB and the Press Association for providing the folowing post and picture.
Daniel Fogg put himself in pole position to claim an Olympic place after finishing ahead of rival David Davies in the FINA Olympic Marathon Swim Qualifier in Setubal, Portugal.
With just one place available on Team GB for the 10km Marathon swim at the Olympics, Fogg has done his chances of selection no harm.
The Commonwealth bronze medallist finished in 35th place in one hour 49 minutes and 38 seconds ahead of Davies who was 38th in 1.50.04.
Both Brits were in the main pack for the first of six laps but by the second, the lead group broke away, leaving Fogg and Davies fighting for the top British spot.
Turning to start his final lap, Fogg pulled away from Davies taking a 17-second lead and held on down the stretch.
Fogg said: "That was a tough race. I didn't really get into my race rhythm and it felt hard throughout from start to finish.
"I couldn't respond to the pack when they made a break and I am disappointed with the final result.
"There will be different conditions in London, so if I get selected, I will hopefully get in and race better."

Premier League
Top Scorers
Leicester Lions - Kauko Nieminen 12 1, Magnus Karlsson 9 1
Newcastle - Richie Worrall 18 1, Ludvig Lindgren 9 1
Last night the Premier League's two top teams came head to head in what was expected to be a Titanic struggle, and so it proved.
The Diamonds could have had the match knocked into a cocked hat well before the last heat decider had it not been for their trio of expected high flyers suffering disappointing return with the so-called lower-lights, Ludvig Lindgren and the two Worrall twins scoring 35 of their total of 44!
Richie Worrall took an electrifying win in Heat One well ahead of the field but number one Stuart Robson struggled to get on terms at the back in the 3-3 share whilst twin Steve Worrall took Heat Two in equally impressive style despite some major pressure from Jan Graversen behind in the Diamonds' 2-4 putting them 5-7 up.
Kauko Nieminen and Jari Makinen made short shrift of Mark Lemon and Christian Henry who relinquished a home 5-1 which put Leicester back in front 10-8 before another great win from Richie Worrall from the gate in the fourth levelled the match with Lindgren in third.
Steve Worrall continued his family's great form taking Heat Six, blasting round the outside of the field on bend two and with Lindgren taking second the Diamonds' 1-5 which put them back in the lead 17-19.
Lasse Bjerre and Simon Nielsen hit a solid 4-2 past Lemon and Henry in Heat Seven to level it all up again before Lindgren jetted away from the gate to win by a mile with Richie Worrall tucking in for second to again put the determined Diamonds back into the lead 22-26.
That gap was extended to six after Lindgren came out again an took Heat Nine in style to zip past the field on bend two with Steve Worrall's third place all important too, but again Lemon and Henry conceded a 4-2 in the 10th easily by Magnus Karlsson.
Nieminen and Graversen took the 5-1 from gate to flag in Heat 12 with Steve Worrall taking third and Lemon last with the match tied once more 36-36, whilst a critical 5-1 from Karlsson and Bjerre over Robson and an unexpectedly subdued Lindgren put Leicester 41-37 up with two races to go.
Richie Worrall again stormed Heat 14 whist Henry battled well in third place, pressurising Nielsen all the way leaving the score with one race left at a tantalising 43-41, but whist Heat 15 was again expertly won by the brilliant Richie Worrall, Lindgren, who tried every move possible to pass Nieminen in third, just couldn't manage the pass to leave the narrowest of wins in the Lions' den.
Team manager George English said: "We could have - and to be frank - should have had this match won with ease tonight, but I cannot knock the performances of the utterly brilliant Richie Worrall who was spectacular tonight, his brother Steve and Ludvig Lindgren who kept us in the hunt whilst the rest of the lads are all very well experienced and know all too well that tonight wasn't good enough and I know they'll be working on making sure they never have a night like that again. It's very disappointing not to take a good solid win here tonight."

Tapes Up: Diamonds Force Deserved Draw At Glasgow
Thank you to George English and Diamonds Media Team for report and Steve Brock for the picture
Glasgow Tigers 45
Newcastle Diamonds 45
Premier League
Top Scorers
Glasgow - Joe Screen 13 1, James Grieves 11
Newcastle - Christian Henry 11 1, Stuart Robson 10
The Newcastle Diamonds went with an overpowering air of confidence to the Glasgow Tigers in yesterday's Premier League match (return this evening at Brough Park - 6.30pm) and it proved well-founded despite an opening 4-2 to the home side.
With the Worrall twins away on Under-21 World Championship Semi Final duty, guest reserves Joe Haines and Lubos Tomicek took a solid 1-5 from Jayden O' Malley and Mason Campton who briefly passed the Czech before losing his advantage before the end of the first lap putting the Diamonds into the lead 5-7.
Former Tiger Christian Henry and his Aussie partner Mark Lemon made Filip Sitera and a horrendously out-of-control Josh Grajczonek look very ordinary with another maximum score pushing the Diamonds 6-12 up.
Following two shared heats, Joe Screen took a win for Glasgow in the sixth race and tried team riding with Chris Mills during the heat, but Mills was lacking speed and Ludvig Lindgren eventually split the pairing reducing the 5-1 to a 4-2, taking the lead down to four once more.
Lemon fell whilst jostling for position on bend two of Heat Seven and remounted a long way back whilst Henry took the win before Tomicek took another fine Diamonds' heat win in the eighth chased hard by Mills and Campton with the scores still four apart, 22-26.
Lemon recovered his composure in Heat 10 to block out Screen well and with Henry taking the third place point by passing Mills on the final lap the 2-4 eased Newcastle two more ahead, but that was nullified again in Heat 11 with a James Grieves leading well and trying to team ride with O' Malley but Stuart Robson is too wily as he took the Tiger reserve on the last lap.
Lemon's Heat 12 win shared that race too but come Heat 13 disaster struck for the Diamonds when Lindgren fell on the third lap, stopping the races to be excluded and the result was awarded a home 5-1, levelling the meeting 39-39 with only two races left.
Henry stormed Heat 14 with ease, but Tomicek missed the gate to trail throughout in another 3-3 the match still level, 42-42, with only one race to go and with Screen and Grieves up against Henry and Robson, a stunning climax was on the cards.
As the tapes went up it was home number one Screen who jetted ahead to lead with Robson and Henry hot on his heels and Grieves at the rear, and whilst there were no passes in the race the close jousting for position made it the race of the afternoon which also ended up a shared 3-3 ending the match with a deserved 45-45 draw.
Diamond's boss George English said: "The lads had to overcome some major problems for Claes Nedermark who retired from two races making us effectively a six-man team and to a man the responded perfectly to lift their game and keep the match tight.
"Our guests both performed admirably and every point counted so we have no complaints whilst Christian Henry was superb. A draw was probably the fairest result, but a win would have been nice."
Rebels 2: Brumbies edge past Rebels
Thank you to the Rebels Media Team for match report and picture.
The RaboDirect Rebels made the Brumbies sweat for their 27-19 victory in Melbourne on Friday night, in a match that was anyone’s for the taking right until the end.
After allowing the Australian conference leaders to take an early lead, the Rebels worked their way back into the contest by half-time, and could have gone into the changing rooms with the lead but for a disallowed try just before the break.
The Brumbies made their weight of possession tell in the second half, however, and kept the scoreboard ticking over as the home side were repeatedly penalised at the breakdown. Try as they might, the Rebels just couldn’t claw back the narrow deficit before the final whistle sounded.
Head Coach Damien Hill said his side had enough opportunities, but their inability to take their chances ultimately cost them.
“We had enough possession and enough field position in that second half to score points, and it is disappointing that we weren’t able to convert that pressure into points,” said Hill.
“The effort’s definitely there –execution and maybe a little bit of discipline at times let us down.”
It was a jittery start for the Rebels, with early breakdown infringements gifting the Brumbies a 9-0 headstart from the boots of Jesse Mogg and Zac Holmes.
Luke Jones and Cadeyrn Neville led the Rebels back into the match with crashing runs at the Brumbies’ defence, and eventually the sustained pressure resulted in a penalty that allowed Julian Huxley to rein in the deficit.
The referee was sharp on the breakdown from the very beginning, and quickly lost patience with the Rebels for not rolling away. Jono Owen ultimately paid the price with 10 minutes in the sin bin, and the Brumbies quickly made their advantage count as centre Andrew Smith crossed for a try as the desperate Melbourne defence ran out of numbers.
Huxley kicked two penalties following a sustained period of attacking pressure to bring the score back to 14-9 as half-time approached, before a brilliant break from James Hilgendorf almost gave the Rebels the lead.
As the Brumbies defence rushed up from a lineout, the five-eighth skipped his way through a gap and sprinted towards the tryline. The chasing tacklers brought him down agonisingly close to the line, and while his momentum looked to have taken him over, the video referee decided the footage was inconclusive.
The Rebels assaulted the line once again from the ensuing scrum, but try as they might they couldn’t make the crucial last few inches to the chalk. A consolation penalty had to suffice, and the teams left the field with the scores at 14-12.
Early points went the way of the Brumbies once again in the second half, as Holmes slotted another short-range penalty.
For a time it seemed as though the Brumbies would have to content themselves with shots at goal, with the Rebels defence holding firm even as trick passes and daring offloads threatened to split them open.
But soon enough the visitors converted their time in Rebels’ territory into further points. A pass out of the tackle after a long attacking sequence created an overlap for full-back Robbie Coleman to score, taking the lead out to 24-12.
The Rebels struck back immediately from the restart, however. The ball bounced into the arms of Gareth Delve from the kick-off, and the No. 8 offloaded brilliantly to Cooper Vuna, who swerved and dummied before making for the left corner and diving over. Huxley nailed the difficult kick from out wide to add the extras and cancel out the Brumbies’ advantage in an instant.
The two scores seemed to spark the game to life, and some high-tempo, running rugby followed as the match entered the final quarter. But with both sides desperately seeking a decisive score, their execution began to waver and passes went astray.
Eventually the Brumbies managed to gain some breathing space with another penalty, taking their lead to 27-19 as the clock wound down.
But the Rebels had no intention of giving this game up, and spent the final minutes hammering away at the Brumbies’ defence. Time was against them however, and a handling error after the siren sounded denied their hopes of earning what would have been a deserved bonus point.

LDN 12: Grabarz delighted with high jump win
Our London 2012 feature continues, with our thanks to Team GB ans the Press Association. Report and pictures provided in full from www.teamgb.com
Robbie Grabarz has provided the top performance from a British perspective at the Diamond League meeting in Rome, winning the high jump with a new personal best of 2.33m which takes him top of the world rankings in 2012.
Grabarz lost his lottery funding at the end of a poor season in 2011, but rededicated himself to the sport and it paid dividends as he cleared each height at the first attempt until failing to clear 2.35m.
"I achieved what I set out to achieve," the 24-year-old said. "I have been jumping very well in training but been trying to keep a lid on it. That's why I started my season so late."
Greg Rutherford also claimed victory in the long jump, producing a leap of 8.32m in the final round to finish just 3cm down on the British record he equalled earlier this year.
But Dwain Chambers had to settle for second place on his first appearance in a British relay team since 2006, running a solid first leg but then seeing team-mates Harry-Aikines Aryeetey, James Ellington and Leevan Yearwood unable to hold off Canada on the line.
Elsewhere there was worrying injury news for a number of British athletes with Dai Greene and Perri Shakes-Drayton pulling out of their 400m hurdles races with a virus and hamstring strain respectively, while world indoor champion Yamile Aldama suffered a shoulder injury in the triple jump.
Aldama, 39, landed awkwardly in the pit after jumping 14.65m in the second round - her longest outdoors for six years - and passed the rest of her four jumps. She will have a scan on the injury in London.
There was better news for Goldie Sayers in the javelin, who overcame a bout of food poisoning to throw 64.73m, her longest since a personal best of 65.75m saw her finish fourth in the Beijing Olympics.
"I'm pleased with that. I knew I only had one or two throws in me," the 29-year-old said. "I was quite ill on Monday with food poisoning so I'm pleased with a season's best at this stage... On Monday and Tuesday I wasn't sure if I would travel but I actually had food poisoning before Beijing so I knew I was capable of feeling better."
Jo Pavey was only 10th in the 5,000m, some 34 seconds behind the winner, but did achieve the Olympic 'A' standard, while Emma Jackson was 10th in the 800m and Steph Twell 12th in the 1,500m. Tiffany Porter was sixth in the 100m hurdles and Andrew Osagie third in the 800m 1:44.71, just outside his personal best.

Gwrys Yn Kernow: Pirates unable to clear the final hurdle, but good effort Lads.
Thank you to Woll for the Match report and Brian Tempest for the photo. A big thank you to Woll, Brian, Simon Bryant and all our friends at Cornish Pirates for everything this season. We have enjoyed the journey, like you all, disappointed with the result - but well played Lads. We hopefully will be back for more next season, that is pending a RFU appeal.
London Welsh 29 Cornish Pirates 20
RFU Championship Play-Off Final 2nd leg
Wednesday May 30th 2012
Kassam Stadium Oxford
Woll's Match Report
An evening of contrasting fortunes and emotion finally concluded, with as clear a signal to the Men in Blazers as to what must happen next; with regards a simpler, fairer passage between the Championship and the Promised Land.
The presentation ceremony itself didn’t show too well under the darkening evening Oxfordshire sky either, as the vanquished and clearly spent Cornish Pirates were consigned to the background, without as much as a consoling shake of the hands on the podium, before the victorious Welsh Exiles could deservedly take the plaudits.
Things have to change.
And why shouldn’t they? As not for the first time, another feast of Championship rugby had been served up before a national audience which deserves better recognition.
Chasing a 16 point deficit and with several players taking their bow in a Pirates shirt; it was the Cornish side who took the early initiative.
Penberthy’s 4th minute drop goal was just the start required and, although it was cancelled out by Davies three minutes later; the youngster’s surprise inclusion into the starting line-up already seemed to be inspired.
Locke’s appearance in the midfield also made a difference; adding a dimension that the Welsh defence struggled to cope with despite the fact that it was ‘as you were’ at the end of a first quarter that simply flew by. Quite how only traded penalties from Cook and Davies had troubled the scorers may only be solved by a Morse resurrection by Mr Dexter.
Penberthy wove, whilst Burgess threw himself into everything like a man possessed, but still no further reward was forthcoming.
Horror of horrors too as the Welsh finally breached the Pirate 22; but with little effect, as they managed to get turned over, forcing a rapid retreat as Cook checked the Satnav for another long distance run-in.
His progress in pursuit of his own footwork ended abruptly, as did everyone’s reactions bar Evans; the flying wing man heeding Mr Rose’s exaltations to ‘play on’, to gather the pill and race to the line sending the massed ranks of Cornish fans into heaven.
Cook’s conversion was straight down the middle and the scent in the air changed noticeably.
The Londoners tried to respond and saw their cause helped with Locke’s early withdrawal; or so they thought. Their second and only other visit of the half into the Pirates red zone was quashed unceremoniously at scrum time, and erased totally by another good touch finder from Penberthy soon after.
Momentum remained with the Cornishmen until the break, but how they would rue Burgess not backing himself a metre or so more, when another dramatic 60m run seemed destined for glory.
Penberthy too, was mightily close with another 40m drop goal but, with Davies blotting his copybook for the first and only time in the tie on the stroke of halftime; the Pirates it appeared were half way towards their goal.
If only.
After the break, a couple of early Davies pots signalled a change of fortunes from which the Pirates would struggle to prevent overall.
The second in particular must have had some effect on the mind-set, as firstly Doherty found himself under pressure when denied a clear ‘Mark’, and was charged down. Evans briefly rescued the situation but was caught in possession.
The resultant penalty looked to have narrowly missed the right upright as everyone’s body language suggested whilst the TMO took seemingly eons to mull over the decision.
Surprise then when David removed his finger from the earpiece to point back to halfway. It was ‘de ja vu’ all over again and a harsh reminder of similar in last year’s final (1st Leg).
Moments like this can disrupt and inspire in equal and opposite measure, as was to be proven over the next twenty minutes. The Pirates lost their rhythm almost immediately whereas the Exiles seized the initiative back with relish, in a spell that ultimately settled whose shelf would be adorned with a nice new shiny pot.
Former Pirate favourite, Ma’asi joined the fray and found himself instrumental in his former club’s downfall. That he was protecting George’s forthcoming nuptials was soon forgotten, as the hooker found time later for a rampaging run that should have led to more than the butchering it got with men out wide to spare.
It mattered not as the trusty right peg of Davies gave his side the lead on the hour, and Tonga’uhia repeated his Mennaye try scoring exploits leaving no doubt as to who were to be crowned Champions.
Winged but not down and out, the Pirates somehow pulled themselves upright for one last hurrah. Boosted by the fresh legs and bags of enthusiasm of Kessell & McAtee they fought fire with fire and managed to create once again.
With everything being run, they finally managed to engineer a catch-n-drive from about 10m out that waivered at first from some still very fierce Welsh defence; but re-grouped manfully for Storer to go over and give hope of a win on the night.
Cook’s range was spot on and reduced the gap to merely two and with still five to play.
Even this was to be shattered as the Champions elect ended even this slim hope ruthlessly; Moates pouncing on his moment of glory to score out wide and test Davies for one final time. The full back obliged and the celebrations all but began for the ‘form side’ since the Play Offs began.
What happens next remains to be decided of course and will probably un-nerve even the Priory’s reputed Headless Horseman for a while.
For the Pirates however, they can deservedly look forward to a well-earned break and chance to regroup after a season like no other. But for the distractions off the field, who knows what could have been? There is little doubt that it has had its effect and is something that will be rectified.
Mention too for two ex-Pirates bed blocking at the Nuffield Hospital, Messrs’ Berryman & Westren; the latter gaining his unwanted admission the night before the game and much to his own frustration! Get well soon fellahs - there’s work still to be done!
