The Newcastle Diamonds needed to win the League Cup meeting last night at Brough Park to progress to the Semi Finals of the competition and managed the task in fine style with a 22-point victory over Redcar.

The home side got off to a flying start with a huge win for Stuart Robson in Heat One, although Claes Nedermark in second went way too wide on bend two of the last lap to lose a point in the eventual 4-2.

The Worrall twins hammered home a solid reserve heat 5-1 whilst in Heat Three skipper Mark Lemon and Christian Henry easily shrugged off the challenge of both Aaron Summers and Justin Sedgmen in another home maximum taking the score to 14-4.

With Ulrich Ostergaard on a tactical ride for double points in Heat Five the urgency got to several of the riders, but it was Lemon who moved too soon and touched the tapes for and exclusion with Richie Worrall coming in to take his place in the re-run which he won by a huge margin, but the tactical man was stuck in third for a single point in another Newcastle 5-1.

A second tactical ride for the Bears came in Heat Seven for Aaron Summers in an attempt to quell the rampant Diamond, but despite a superb pass of
Ludvig Lindgren coming off bend four on the opening lap the double-pointed Bear could not dent the excellent ride from Steve Worrall who took a superb win in a 4-4 result with the score now a dominant 30-14.

Carl Wilkinson proved he's a never-say-die rider, having scored two ducks, opened up his throttle wide on bend two to shoot round the entire field in Heat Eight to take a superb win hotly pursued by Richie Worrall in the shared 3-3.

Lindgren, mounted on a brand new engine, jetted away to take a big win in Heat 11 whilst Ostergaard and Wilkinson rode a wild rodeo of a race behind to scissor their way round Steve Worrall on lap two in the shared 3-3 which moved the score on to 45-23.

The semi final place was sealed after a scorching Heat 12 5-1 to the high flying Richie Worrall and Lemon over Justin Sedgmen which took the match to an unassailable 50-24 with three races left on the card.

Team manager George English said: "We've really have hit top-form as a team and that's shown in both our matches this week against the Bears to get into the League Cup semi final, and now we must concentrate on replicating this form in next week's knockout cup quarter final with Sheffield and then the League beyond that, and as we're still sitting pretty in 1st place to date we will really be focussing in on that goal."
