Captains Log: Great Lakes Loons series reports
Thank you to our friends at Lake County Captains for providing our match reports for the series at Great Lakes Loons played at Midland, Michigan.
Captains Blank Loons
The Captains scored four runs in the second inning Monday Night. The inning was highlighted by Luigi Rodriguez's two out two run double. The double was the second RBI hit of the game for Rodriguez who ended the game with four RBI's. The Captains were leading 5-0 heading to the third inning.
The Captains scored first on Monday Night in Great Lakes. Luigi Rodriguez singled home LeVon Washington to give the Captains their fourth straight game where they have scored in the first inning. The Captains lead early 1-0.
Lake County added another run in the top half of the third inning when Jerrud Sabourin walked and came around to score on and RBI ground out by Lindor. In the fourth Alex Monsalve blasted the first Captains homerun of the season to left field. At that time the score was 7-0. Lake County was not done as Lindor led off the sixth inning with a triple to dead center. Rodriguez picked up his forth RBI of the game on his sacrifice fly out to center. The Captains led the game 8-0.
Captains starter Joe Colon (1-0) got the win working six shutout innings on three hits, walking two while striking out four. Francisco Valera (0-0, 3.00) relieved Colon and pitched out of a jam with a runner on third and less than two outs. Shawn Armstrong entered the game in the eighth inning and promptly retired the side 1-2-3. Armstrong came back out for the ninth and shut down the Loons for the night.
The Loons starting pitcher Gustavo Gomez (0-1) got the loss. Gomez lasted two innings allowing 6 hits and five earned runs. He walked one and struck out two. The Loons bullpen combined to allowed three runs, all earned in eight innings of relief.
Captains fall 5-4
Jesse Bosnik of the Great Lakes Loons blasted a 415 ft homerun to right field to put the Loons up by two runs in the bottom of the forth inning. The homer proved to be the difference in the 5-4 win on Tuesday Night.
The Captains again got on the board first as LeVon Washington led off the ball game with a single and advanced to second on an error on the third baseman. Francisco Lindor's groundball moved Washington along and then the Alex Monsalve brought Washington in. The Captains led after one inning 1-0.
The Captains added on in the second inning when they scored another single run when Robel Garcia doubled to the left center field gap. An error allowed Garcia to move to third and then a sacrifice fly by Alex Lavisky brought home Garcia. The score was 2-0.
Great Lakes answered in the bottom half of the second when they started the inning with back-to- back singles and then saw Jesse Bosnik hit a game tying double into the gap. The score was tied at two. Those two RBI's were half of the four that Bosnik plated Tuesday.
The Captains made it close in the ninth when with two outs, Lindor tripled home Washington who singled before him. The score was 5-4. That was the final of the game. Alex Lavisky had two hits for Lake County and also threw two runners out who were trying to steal bases.
Captains starter Kyle Blair (0-1) got the loss working four innings on five hits, allowing four earned runs, walking one and striking out five. Cody Anderson (0-0) relieved Blair and pitched four innings himself allowing just one run and fanned seven.
The Loons starting pitcher Arismendy Ozoria (0-0) did not factor in the decision. Ozoria only lasted 4.1 IP allowing five hits three runs two of which were earned. Juan Noriega (1-0) got the win after pitching a scoreless 2.1 innings. Yimi Garcia came on for his first save of the season.
Captains Fall 5-4 in 14 innings
The Great Lakes Loons defeated the Lake County Captains by a score of 5-4 of Wednesday afternoon/evening at Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan. The game lasted into the 14th inning and was won by Great Lakes in the bottom half. With one out, Prat Maynard singled to left field and then Kevin Taylor laced a single down the line that advanced Maynard to third. The throw from the outfield got away from the cutoff man Maynard scampered home to give the Loons the victory in the four hours and nine minute game.
The Loons scored first as Jesus Arrendondo singled and then Joe Winker hit into a fielder's choice but an error allowed Arrendondo to reach 2nd and Winker was safe at first. Scott Schebler doubled home Arredondo and Winker to third. Prat Maynard then grounded out to second base and got the RBI as Winker scored and Schebler advanced to third. Schebler came home on a single by Kevin Taylor and the Loons led 3-0 after one complete inning.
Great Lakes added on in the 2nd inning on a solo homerun by Jesse Bosnik. This is the second game in a row where Bosnik has taken Captains pitching deep. The score after two innings was Lake County 0 and Great Lakes 4.
Lake County answered in the top of the forth inning when Alex Lavisky hit a one out single that scored Luigi Rodriguez and LeVon Washington. The lead was cut in half and the score stood at 4-2 Loons. Lavisky was not done as in the fifth he picked up two more RBI's on a double and that tied the game at four. Lavisky is the second Captains player to have four RBI's in a game this series.
Captains starter Felix Sterling (0-1) didn't factor in the decision after going 5 innings and allowing just four hits, four runs one was earned. Sterling walked one and struck out six. Cole Cook entered the game and pitched a scoreless sixth inning and then Kyle Petter relieved Cook . Petter pitched three innings in relief all scoreless and five strikeouts. Mason Radeke entered when the game went to extra frames. Radeke pitched a scoreless 10th, 11th and 12th inning. Jordan Cooper (0-1) relieved Xavier De Los Santos who exited the ball game without retiring a batter in the 13th, and got out of it with no damage. Cooper came back out for the 14th inning.
The Loons starting pitcher Jarret Martin (0-0) also didn't factor in the decision. Martin was knocked out of the game after four and two thirds innings pitched allowing 4 runs three were earned. Martin surrendered five hits two walks and struck out six. Jose Dominguez entered the game and pitched three and one third scoreless innings in relief. Jason West preserved the tie as the game went to extra innings. West hurled two innings gave up one hit and struck out two. Ryan O'Sullivan also pitched three innings of scoreless ball and gave way to Matt Sheldon. Sheldon ended up the winner and improves to 1-0.
The Captains will open the home season on Thursday night April 12 at 6:30 PM at Classic Park. The Captains begin celebrating the start of their 10th season in northeast Ohio by welcoming the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Rays) to town.
