Captains Log: Lake County losing streak continues

Hot Rods Spoil Opening Night at Classic Park

The Bowling Green Hot Rods spoil opening night in Eastlake as they defeated the Lake County Captains by a score of 5-2 at Classic Park. Hot Rods pitching held the Captains scoreless until the ninth inning.

The Hot Rods scored first in the top half of the second inning when Jeff Malm blasted his first homerun of the season to right field. This marks the third straight game in which the Captains have given up a long ball. The score was 1-0 after two innings.

The Hot Rods tacked on another in the third inning after Tyler Goeddel doubled and was waved around third on the base hit by Drew Vettleson. After three innings the Hot Rods led 2-0. Two more runs came across in the fifth when Juniel Querecuto reached on an error and scored. Tyler Goeddel also singled and scored in the inning.

It was 4-0 headed to the sixth. Bowling Green scored their final run in the top of the ninth when Alejandro Segovia tripled and scored on the Querecuto single. It was 5-0 headed to the bottom half of the ninth.

Lake County got on the board in the bottom of the ninth when Francisco Lindor singled and Alex Monsalve singled Lindor to second. Alex Lavisky then doubled home Lindor and Monsalve to third. The RBI was Lavisky's eighth which is a team high. Monsalve came home on the Leonardo Castillo ground out. The Captains got the tying run to the plate in the ninth but it wasn't meant to be. The final was Bowling Green 5 and Lake County 2.

Captains starter Elvis Araujo (0-2) was saddled with the loss. He pitched five innings gave up four hits, four runs, two of which were earned did not walk a batter and struck out seven for his second consecutive outing. Francisco Valera pitched three shutout innings for the Captains. Newcomer Jeff Johnson made his professional debut by pitching an inning and giving up an earned with two strikeouts.

The Hot Rods starting pitcher Felipe Rivero (2-0) picked up the win after hurling six innings and giving up only four hits and added three strikeouts. Rivero is yet to give up a earned run in his two starts this season. Andrew Bellatti entered in relief in the seventh inning and pitched two shutout innings allowing just one hit and walking one. He also fanned three. The Captains got on the board in the ninth inning against Charlie Cononie. Cononie gave up two runs both earned on three hits. He stuck out one in his only inning of work.

Captains Lose 2-1

The Bowling Green Hot Rods snuck past Lake County by a score of 2-1 on Friday night at Classic Park. The Hot Rods scored both of their runs in the first inning. The pair of runs combined with good pitching did the trick on a chilly night.
In the first, Drew Vettleson singled and was quickly tripled home by Kes Carter. The Hot Rods were quickly up 1-0. Two batters later it was 2-0 as Cameron Seitzer singled home Vettleson. The two run lead was held up by the bullpen which was the story in the win.

The Captains cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth. With one out Jerrud Sabourin hit an opposite field double and then scampered home on the Todd Hankins triple. The score was 2-1 Bowling Green headed to the seventh inning.
Captains starter Will Roberts (1-1) was saddled with the loss. Roberts pitched 6 & 2/3 innings (the longest outing by any Catcher's starter this season) allowing just the two runs in the first, both runs were earned. Roberts also allowed just one walk and struck out seven (which tied a team high for one outing). Cole Cook entered in relief for the Captains. Cook pitched 2.1 IP, and allowed just one hit and also just walked one. Cook struck out two Hot Rods.

The Hot Rods starting pitcher Parker Markel (1-0) picked up the win after hurling six innings and giving up only four hits, allowing one earned run and he added three strikeouts. Jake Partridege pitched two scoreless innings in relief allowing just one hit and striking out two. Austin Hubbard picked up the save, his second, after pitching a scoreless ninth inning. The game was played in a tidy two hours even.

Captains Losing Streak Hits 5 Games

The Bowling Green Hot Rods defeated the Lake County Captains by a score of 8-4 on Saturday afternoon at Classic Park. Bowling Green erupted for four runs in the top of the third inning. Bowling Green had four hits in the inning and was sitting on a 6-0 lead.

In the first, The Captains took the early lead. Luigi Rodriguez led off the game with a double to the gap in left center. Francisco Lindor singled up the middle and the Captains were out in front 1-0.

In the second Inning the Hot Rods answered when Cameron Seitzer led off with a single and then Tyler Motter Homered to left field. Motter also singled and doubled on his afternoon. Bowling Green tacked on two in the top of the fifth inning and led the ball game 8-1 heading to the bottom half of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Captains got a bit closer. Bryson Myles led off with a single to left field. Luigi Rodriguez then tripled Myles home. Alex Monsalve singled in Rodriguez and the score stood at 8-3. The Captains also scored one in the bottom of the ninth when Lindor and Monsalve teamed up again to get the Captains in the scorebook. Lindor beat out an infield single and then cruised home on the Monsalve double to left field. The final was 8-4.

Captains starter Joe Colon (1-1) was saddled with the loss. Colon pitched 2.2 innings and gave up six hits. He allowed six runs, five earned. Colon allowed two free passes and struck out only one. Colon also allowed a homerun in the game. Grant Sides entered and allowed two earned runs in 2.1 IP on three hits. Mason Radeke and Kyle Petter entered the games and both hurled 2.0 scoreless innings each.

The Hot Rods starting pitcher Ryan Carpenter (1-1) picked up the win after hurling five innings and gave up eight hits, allowing three earned runs all were earned and he added seven strikeouts. The Hot Rods Bullpen combined for four innings of one run baseball to preserve the win over the Captains for the third straight game.

BG Hits 6 HR, Win 22-12

The Bowling Green Hot Rods sent 16 men to the plate in the top half of the ninth inning and scored 11 runs en route to the 22-12 victory over the Captains on Sunday afternoon in Eastlake. Before the big inning, the score was 11-10 BG heading to the ninth.

In the first inning, The Captains took the early lead. Luigi Rodriguez started the rally with a slap single to center. Rodriguez stole second base. Alex Monsalve was hit by the pich. Rodriguez stole third and Monsalve stole advanced to second on a wild pitch. Alex Lavisky knocked in Rodriguez on a groundout to first base. Jordan Smith then got a base hit with two outs scoring Alex Monsalve.
In the second Inning the Hot Rods got on the board as they hit their first of five homeruns on the afternoon. Jeff Malm unloaded a solo shot cutting the lead to 2-1. In the third BG hit back-to-back homers by Tyler Goedell and Ryan Brett and led the game 3-2.

The Captains tied the game in the bottom of the half inning when Jordan Smith Tripled and scored on the single by Bryson Myles. In the bottom of the fifth the Captain trailed by one, and scored two runs. The big hits in the inning came with two outs. Jerrud Sabourin and Todd Hankins each got a two out RBI base hit to jolt the Captains into a 6-4 lead.

In the Seventh Inning the Hot Rods took the lead back. Two runners were on with two outs. Todd Glaesmann then blasted a three run homerun to left field. The score was 7-6 BG. In the bottom half of the Inning Lake County got the lead right back after runners were on second and third and then Rodriguez doubled to the left center field gap. The two RBI's put gave the Captains an 8-7 lead.

Bowling Green was far from done. With one out in the bases full Tyler Goeddel unleashed his second homer of the day a Grand Slam. That put the Hot Rods up 11-8. In the bottom half of the eighth saw the Captains blast back-to-back homers themselves. Alex Lavisky homered to left field, and Jordan Smith homered to right field cutting the lead to 11-10. Patric Tolentino batted in the bottom of the ninth and hit his first professional homerun to the bleachers in left field. That made the score 22-12.

Captains starter Cody Anderson (0-0) did not factor in the decision. Anderson pitched 5.0 innings and gave up seven hits. He allowed four runs, all earned. Anderson allowed one free pass and struck out three. Anderson also allowed three homeruns in the game. Kyle Blair entered and pitched 3.1 innings allowing 10 hits, 11 Runs, all earned. He also surrendered two walks and three homeruns. Jeff Johnson entered and pitched 0.2 innings 6 hits 5 ER, 1 BB, and 1 K.

The Hot Rods starting pitcher Roberto Gomez (0-0) did not factor in the decision after pitching four innings seven hits, four earned runs a walk and two strikeouts. The Hot Rods used four relief pitchers in the game. Jake Partridge (1-0) got the win after pitching 0.2 IP with a walk and a strikeout.

The Captains continue the opening home stand of the season on Monday Night as the West Michigan White Caps come to Classic Park. The Captains will send Felix Sterling (0-0,2.70) to the hill to face Josue Carreno (0-2, 7.71) for the White Caps. First pitch will be at 6:30pm.
