WELCOME TO SHOUT

Shout is the new feature coming to SportTrades Report. Shout will express our opinions on sporting news from the previous month, to promote opportunities available with the company, publish updated information regarding SportTrades Report features and forthcoming events.

SportTrades Report is edited by Adam Dennehey and his postings will cover a wide range of sports and evoke much discussion and debate. The Ice Man by Pete Lewis will continue to follow the Chelmsford Chieftains season in Ice Hockey. Sol y Futbal by Ian Lanes will report on the fortunes of UD Lanzarote in the Spanish 3rd Division. Our F.A.Cup Tracker feature started with the Barkingside v Bowers & Pitsea tie in the Extra Prelim Round. We followed the winners through each subsequent round created from that starting point. We are now at Stage 7 Accrington Stanley v Salisbury City.

We are developing our prediction game 2012 that will be available for the 2010/2011 season, which will be featured via SportTrades Talk on Twitter and SportTrades Report. We will run a trial of this feature during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and post more details in January.

SportTrades have joined partnerships with a few organisations. We have joined forces with Girls in Football to increase awareness and funding for the grassroots of the women’s game. We are also in negotiations with Teams 4 You to find a partnership that will benefit that charity. Our own campaign ‘Support Your Local’ was put on the back burner for a couple of months due to other commitments. We will be in a position during December, however, to launch this promotion. Our aim will be to encourage season ticket holders of Premiership and League clubs, to go and watch their local ‘Non League’ club if their team are away.

This month has seen the extremes of sport. The dark side, Formula One Drivers instructed to crash, retired tennis legends declaring their drug abuse during winning titles and premiership footballers jailed. The bright side, England qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Jensen Button became world champion and Beth Tweddle produced a fantastic display to also become world champion. So October produced many talking points I’m sure November will do the same.

The Shout postings will be made on the first Friday of each month with the first on 4th December, make a note in you diary. SportTrades Diaries are available for clubs to order. Designed to incorporate a season, they run from July 2010 – June 2011. Your club Logo can be printed on the cover and we can also contain club information pages. Please contact us if interested. There is no minimum order, however, the more you request the cheaper the cost of the individual diary.

SHOUT is coming to SportTrades Report 4th December.

Sol y Futbol: Honours Even In Canaries Derby

Report by Ian Lane

TENERIFE B 2 LANZAROTE 2

26th October 2009

U.D. Lanzarote were within two minutes of securing their first away win of the season, however they did gain their first away point in a good performance against their island rivals.

Los Rojillos looked good from the start and in only the 5th minute a superb run from Rúben Rodriguez who skinned his defender and pulled the ball back for Rosmen, his 5 yard side foot came back off the bar but the tall striker fired in the rebound and claimed his second goal of the season and put his side into unfamiliar territory by leading a game of football.

If the Primera Liga´s sides B team thought they were up against a side low on confidence they were mistaken as Lanzarote played the ball around the park with ease and looked as though they were league leaders rather than propping up the table. Lanzarote dominated the remainder of the half but failed to create anything clear cut whereas their opponents only threat came from set pieces as the score remained 0-1 at the break.

In the opening minutes of the second period Tenerife gained control of possession as the Rojillos were gradually pinned back. Ten minutes into the second half and a clear push by Lanzarote´s centre back Faruk on striker Ramón resulted in a penalty for the Blanquiazules (blue and whites). Midfielder Airán Cabrera sent keeper Floro the wrong way by sticking the ball into the right hand corner leveling the scores at one apiece.

Tenerife then decided to go for the kill moving their left and right back forward and playing with three centre backs. To combat this Rojillos manager Carmelo Hernández switched from 4-4-2 to 4-5-1 and packed the midfield. Lanzarote were under pressure but the defence was confident and held firm.

On the counter attack in the 64th minute the Rojillos restored their lead. Man of the match Rúben Rodriguez went on a scintillating run racing past defenders and laid the ball back on a plate for sub José Manuel and for the second consecutive week the gifted winger came off the bench two minutes previous and scored from close range.

Five minutes later and Rúben Rodriguez had run himself into the ground was replaced by Barnsley boy Ian Robinson. As a unit the Rojillos defended stoutly but in the 88th minute a corner for Tenerife was swung in and defender Moreno climbed all over Rosmen and headed high into the right hand corner and the score was 2-2.

This infuriated the Rojillos as a blatant foul was ignored. Lanzarote then played the remaining minutes on the attack and were unlucky not to take the lead for a third time.

This can still be viewed as a good away point but Lanzarote can be disappointed to have not claimed all three. The good news is that the Rojillos have now found the net five times in their last two outings which is one more than their opening eight matches.

Ex Rojillo Oscar Martín has been in fine form since his arrival in Tenerife and in time a Primera Liga debut could be on the cards. Against his former club thankfully he had a quieter game. An improvement is noticeable over recent weeks but points at home are critical. Lanzarote remain bottom though next week the Rojillos are at home and take on Cerro Reyes (formerly Badajoz) who are only one place above Lanzarote

Why Brawn And Jenson Are Worthy Champions

SportTrades Adam Dennehey Writing

With it being almost a week since Jenson Button and Brawn clinched the Formula 1 World Drivers and Constructors titles. As I'm a big Formula 1 fan i felt that it would be appropriate to write about the small subject of whether Button and Brawn are worthy champions or not. The reason for this is that in the build up to the Brazilian Grand Prix there was a small question emerging about the fact that Jenson’s results since the Turkish GP in June have not been as good as results earlier in the season. But does that theory mean that Jenson and the team are not worthy of what they've won this season - no it does not!

Jenson’s performances at the start of the season were nothing short of brilliant. Matched with a fine car in the Brawn BGP 001 and a reliable and quick Mercedes engine, Jenson as we should now know won 6 of the first 7 races. In the only race he didn’t win in the first 7 he still managed a fine third in Bahrain behind the two Red Bull drivers (Vettel and Webber).

In fact in those early parts of the season it looked like this year’s season was going to be a boring processional one. No disrespect to Button or Brawn whose achievements were quite sensational, but if it wasn’t for the Red Bull’s finding some form and the other leading drivers making steps forward, Brawn’s dominance may have been seen in a negative light. After all at the start of this decade we had Michael Schumacher winning a staggering 5 championships on the bounce. Between 2000 and 2004, only the 2000 and 2003 seasons were ones where Schumacher and Ferrari didn’t have it all their own way.

Since Turkey though, Button ‘struggled’ in the eyes of a few people and began to struggle for the front in qualifying yet alone the races. However in the races since Turkey, he has still only failed to finish in the points once. Even in Spa where he retired after a handful of corners on the first lap, it wasn’t really his fault. Heading into the tricky Les Combres section of the track, Jenson spun out only after Renault’s Romain Grosjean ran into the back of him.

That blemish aside he has still had what most drivers would call good point’s finishes, especially a good second at Monza behind fellow team mate Rubens Barichello. So bad days of 5th and 7th placed finishes at the end have helped him to the title because they were not DNF’s where his championship lead would slip further behind.

This year Jenson has had a car worthy of his talents. After dogged years where he was driving a crap car which even a driver with the combined talents of Schumacher, Senna and Moss wouldn’t be able to do well in. Right from the word go, Jenson’s driving was spot on and he matched some brilliant qualifying performances with excellent race results. During those races in particular and the whole season to be fair, when Jenson needed a good spell of laps to put pressure on his opponents he put in some great lap times that earned him the success in the races. It was very much a year of Jenson getting in the car and expressing himself behind the wheel, something he had not been able to in past years.

Now I’ll focus on the team and team owner Ross Brawn. When the 2009 regulations were announced in December 2006, Ross Brawn sacrificed Honda’s 2007 and 2008 seasons for a chance to be the top dog in a year where the technical and aero-dynamical regulations of the car were to be the most radical in years. However after dismal performances and the current world economic recession Honda decided to pull out of the sport in December last year and everyone involved within the team was out of a job.

Thankfully Ross Brawn brought the team and kept the team on the grid. There were casualties with hundreds of people at the base in Brackley losing their jobs. But those high up knew that they had a competitive car under their belts and the rest now is history. The car baring the odd mistake has been reliable and the team have won 8 races so far this season. It’s a credit to everyone involved with the team through their previous incarnations of Honda and BAR that there has been a fairytale ‘light’ at the end of the tunnel – even if they were not present at Interlagos last weekend.

Ross has shown once again that he is one of the key figures in F1. Under his work he has been part of championship winning seasons with 3 different teams; Benetton, Ferrari and now his own team. Of course beforehand he was working with a certain Michael Schumacher who at his peak was the best driver in the sport. This year’s championship i would argue means more not just because of Brawn’s fairytale story but the fact that they have overcome the bigger names in Ferrari, McLaren, Renault and BMW in getting there.

In conclusion both Button and Brawn are worthy champions. Yes they were slightly fortunate at the start of the season that no-one could really match up to them, but the team still had to do their job and Jenson had to get to the car to the finish. Time and time again this year, when it has really mattered Jenson has produced the pace and consistency needed to win the title. The team have continued their fine work and with limited resources at the start of the year have worked their way to a stunning conclusion. Between now and next season the likes of Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren will be working their hardest to chase down Brawn and start next season well. It will be hard for both Button and Brawn to retain their titles; however I don’t think that they’re a team scared of a daunting challenge

Good Results For Chelmsford

Pete Lewis Reporting:

The Chieftains headed to Oxford to take on the City Stars in what was potentially their toughest game so far this season. The game started off in interesting fashion when notorious referee Blaine Evans sent Rudi Dzurko from the ice to have his chin strap sorted out before the first puck had dropped. It was expected that Evans would continue in the same vein all night long and to be fair other than some meddling in face off infringements and a few questions to players about their kit he called a good game. It wasn’t until the second period before the first goal was scored when Danny Wright fired through a crowd of players in front of the Oxford net when the Chieftains were on the power play and scored for the visiting side. Nine minutes later the Stars had tied the game up when Ken Forshee put Abu-Saada in and he scored his third goal in 2 games for the Stars.

The game was very open and heading into the third period it could have gone either way. The Stars began to tire first and the Chieftains maintained their pressure on the Stars net and eventually forced a goal through man of the match Danny Hammond. The Stars didn’t give up the fight and tried everything they could to get back in the game but Andy Moffat stood firm in the Chieftains net and made some quality saves. With under a minute on the clock the Stars pulled their net minder for an extra skater to put more pressure on the Chieftains goal and defence. However it was their undoing as the powerful Hammond and Novak combined to send star forward Jerry Pavlus through to score the empty net goal with 2.2 seconds left to play.

Speaking after the game Dean Birrell, Chieftains coach, had this to say “It’s never an easy place to come to and to come away with a win like we did is very pleasing. They gave us a real test tonight and were not easy to break down. Pre-season I said that Oxford would be one of the dark horses in the league and on tonight’s showing I stand by that. Having said that, the youngsters on the Chieftains side really stepped up to the mark tonight and it’s testament to their ability and dedication to the cause that they did that. It bodes well for the long-term future of the club that we can produce young players that stand up like they were tonight when we were missing key players for one reason or another”.

Meanwhile back in Essex the Chelmsford Warriors were up against one of the contenders for the league the Invicta Mustangs. An early goal from Max Bennett ensured that at the first break the Warriors were 1-0 to the good. The Mustangs showed their class in the second period though and fought back to take a 4-2 lead into the next break with a Ben Osborne strike in response for the Warriors. The third was all Warriors as they battled had to try and rescue something from the game and the chances the Mustangs had were stopped by the excellent Andrew Brummitt in the Warriors net.

Ricky Mills and Watson combined to tie the game with 7 minutes on the clock. Time was running out and both sides were throwing everything at the other to take something from this game and then a penalty was called on Invicta leaving them down a player going into the last minute of the game. The Warriors benefited on this with an Adrian Woodyard strike with 55 seconds left to win the game for the Warriors to the obvious delight to the crowd and players who knew that they had seen a game of epic proportions in how the game changed direction so often and at one point looked gone from the home side’s grasp.

Both sides have a weekend off this weekend but the Chieftains return to action with what will be a tough away game in Cardiff on the 31st, followed by an equally tough home game on the 1st V Wightlink Raiders. The Warriors face the Solent and Gosport Devils on the 31st at the Riverside with a 5:30 face off.

Sol y Futbol: Great Character Shown By Rojillos

Report by Ian Lane @ Mercancia Lanzarote

LANZAROTE 3 SPORTING GIJÓN B 3

19th October 2009

Los Rojillos showed superb character by at first clawing back a two goal deficit then finding a dramatic 93rd minute equalizer with only 10 men.

Lanzarote displayed their fighting spirit in a highly entertaining six goal thriller. The Primera Liga’s B team was only seconds away from victory which would have pushed them up to second place in the league table.

Lanzarote began the match looking far the more positive side and big front man Rosmen came close with a header in the 5th minute and only two minutes later had a glorious chance to open his goal scoring account for the season but from seven yards goalkeeper Dani Lavianna saved well with his feet.

In the 17th minute a good cross swung in from the right by Rosmen was well read by Toñito who controlled the ball instantly and unleashed a drive heading for the right hand corner but a last gasp block by a defender prevented the Rojillos from taking a deserved lead.Typically, with chances not been taken Sporting Gijón punished Lanzarote to the full. In the 19th minute a free kick dangerously swung in from the left wing was not dealt with by the defence or claimed by the goalkeeper and at the far post striker Portilla chested his side into a 0-1 lead.

Ten minutes later and Lanzarote were in free fall. A clearance by Gijón’s keeper caught Lanzarote’s centre backs dreaming and winger Jorge neatly chipped Lanzarote’s keeper Ruymán to make the score 0-2 and left Lanzarote with another mountain to climb.

Four minutes before the break and midfielder Rúben Rodriguez turned his defender and was tripped giving Lanzarote a penalty. The same player took the spot kick and fiercely drove the ball low into the right hand corner reducing the score 1-2 and giving his side a lifeline to take into the half time break.

Manager Carmelo Hernández brought on Englishman Ian Robinson to add to his attacking force a minute into the second half and Lanzarote began to dominate possession. Sporting still looked dangerous on the counter and a great run by winger Jorge who fired in a low, hard cross and was only inches away from finding his strike partner Pablo Acebal.

In the 54th minute good work from right back Kamara and the ever alert Toñito who produced a stunning cross in which Rosmen rose tallest and powerfully headed into the roof of the net leveling the scores at two apiece.

Only five minutes later and with the Rojillos in top gear, defender Kamara received a straight red card for causes unknown and again Lanzarote were forced to play the final half hour in scorching heat and a cloudless sky with only 10 men. The unfortunate Englishman had to be sacrificed after only 15 minutes as defender Francis replaced Kamara.

Both teams still went in search of the full three points. In the 66th minute Rojillos defender Santi Torres headed off the line and Lanzarote´s inspirational Captain Vladi who does not understand the meaning of defeat was chasing, tackling and creating the best chances for the home side.

Three minutes from time and Sporting scored what they believed to be the winner. A long ball was tidily chested down by sub Landeira and in one movement guided the ball out of the reach of Ruymán and into the bottom left hand corner.

Deep into stoppage time and a long ball was hoisted into the corner of the box, Rosmen nodded the ball over to the far post and Vladi on the sprint, got that all important toe onto the ball steering it into the back of the net to give his side their first point in eight matches.

It may only be a point but the heart and guts showed by an under pressure side was there for all to see. Vladamir was exceptional and it seems a crime that he is not playing his football at a higher level. Toñito and Rúben both gave 100 per cent and striker Rosmen put in his best performance wearing a Lanzarote shirt. Next week Lanzarote travel and face the B side of Tenerife.

RESPONSE TO JAN MOIR's DAILY MAIL ARTICLE

by Rob McAvoy
Director, SportTrades

Jan Moir of the Daily Mail has written an article regarding the death of Mr Gately. It is the aim of any columnist to achieve a response, which Jan Moir has certainly done. Her views are not shared by SportTrades and many others, however, this is not the purpose of this posting. The death of Mr Gately at such a young age is a tragedy, our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Within the article by Jan Moir, she claimed of her uncertainty surrounding the causes of Mr Gatelys death. She claims that she finds it hard to accept that a fit young man, should put on his pyjamas and collapse on the sofa and die. I would hope, that during the anger displayed over comments within Jan Moir column, that she is advised to visit the C.R.Y (Cardiac Risk in the Young) website. She will find endless examples of young fit people, full of life, simply just pass away without warning. She will read the heartbreaking stories of families who are coming to terms with their loss through the fantastic work of CRY and in return throw themselves into fundraising for the charity.

The charity have many sporting patrons who have experienced the death of friends at young ages. John Inverdale, Sir Ian Botham and Rob Andrew to name a few. Andy Scott, the Brentford FC manager who had to retire from playing due to heart disease, is also a patron. The charity campaigns to raise funding for equipment to check for heart defects within young people. Early detection means prevention. The majority of the experiences chronicled on the website are of young people who enjoy sport and are fit. C.R.Y are also active in counselling for the bereaved, research and much more.

I am lucky. I played Football and Rugby in my younger days, towards the end of my playing days it became more difficult. I linked it to work commitments and my social life getting in the way of any fitness regime. At the age of 30 I had an Aortic Valve replacement, amazingly the problem was picked up on an routine insurance medical. I could so easily have been a statistic.

I urge everybody to visit http://www.c-r-y.org.uk/, read the experiences shared on the site, support the charity and advise Jan Moir that fit young people do die without warning or without reason. I understand Marks and Spencers and a number of other businesses have removed their adverts from the web page the article appears on. It would be great for the Daily Mail to donate the money received for those adverts to CRY.

UPDATES FROM THE ICE

With Pete Lewis

Chelmsford senior ice hockey made it a double winning weekend over the teams from Streatham as the Chieftains won 12-3 at home, while the Warriors picked up a 7-4 win in South London over the Bruins.

In a bad tempered match at the Riverside, Chieftains fell behind to the Redskins when Peter Molnar scored after 16 seconds. The Chieftains battled hard back into the game and 3 goals in the second half of the period ensured the Chieftains went into the first break 2 goals ahead.

The main talking point of the period though was the on-ice fracas between Ed Koral and Will Sanderson of the Redskins and Chieftains tough guys Andy Moffat and BT Williams after the period had ended. Williams ended up with a 2 min penalty for roughing, as did Sanderson who also picked up 10minute misconduct. Moffat took straight 10 minute misconduct for coming off the bench to join in the fracas which almost ended with a mass brawl between all the players on the ice. Moffat then spent the rest of the game eyeballing Sanderson from the bench who was clearly knocked off his game.

The second period began the same way the first one did with the Redskins scoring first, although this time round there was just a hint of controversy to the goal. The referee decided that the puck had gone in when the only thing that did was netminder Ben Clements. Clement was shoved into his goal up the on-rushing Louis Lockwood who ironically was credited with the goal.

What followed was a dominant display from the Chieftains who racked up 5 unanswered goals. During the period referee Ian Hayden began to lose control of the game and tried to stamp his authority on the game by sending Sean Easton and Alex Green to the penalty box on straight 10 minute penalties on the half hour mark.

This did little to calm things and as the third period began, the game turned into a fiery affair with incidents happening all over the ice with Williams being the main target for the Redskins. The game was over as contest, as the score had now reached 9-2 to the Essex side, when Williams finally snapped and lashed out with his stick at a Redskins player which warranted a straight match penalty. He later aimed his stick at the Redskins bench and had to be restrained by his fellow team mates.

Controversy then ensued as both him and Chieftains coach Dean Birrell tried to argue the call with the referee who then added on a 5+game penalty for refusing to leave the box. This meant the Chieftains would have to kill off a 10minute penalty and they did so with relative ease, while also picking up another goal including Danny Hammond’s first goal of a “natural hat trick” in the closing stages. That achievement rightly won Hammond his first man of the match award this season. After the game Birrell said that he didn’t condone the action of Williams, but said that the officials were partly to blame for letting the situation get out of hand.

Meanwhile in south London in Streatham the Warriors continued their good away form as they picked up a 7-4 win with under-18s star Henry Barnes picking up the man of the match award. Both sides return to action this Sunday as the Warriors welcome the Invicta Mustangs to the Riverside which faces off at 6:30, while the Chieftains go on a tricky away game to Oxford City Stars.

Sol y Futbol: Islanders Hit Rock Bottom

CACEREÑO 5 LANZAROTE 0

13th October 2009

U.D. Lanzarote have hit rock bottom. Thrashed by the team who prior to this match were propping up the league. The facts and figures don’t lie. Played eight. Won one, lost seven, scored four goals and conceded twenty two. Result; bottom of the league.

The Rojillos played a similar system to their previous away defeats which has not seen them score a single goal by packing the midfield and with one man up front. One must have sympathy for manager Carmelo Hernández as his choices are limited but surely it is now time to start defending from the front and play with two forwards.

Cacereño which is around 100 km from the border of Portugal were on the scoreboard on the quarter of an hour mark. A penalty awarded for a dubious foul by Rúben Rodriguez which was clearly outside of the area was not the best start for the Rojillos. Diego slotted the ball home and the hosts were in front.

Lanzarote did enjoy an equal amount of possession but very rarely looked like threatening the opponent’s goal. Four minutes before the half time break and Cacereño went 2-0 up. A shot from midfielder Rocha caught Lanzarote replacement keeper Ruymán by surprise and Lanzarote were two down at the break.

Fifteen minutes into the second half and Cacereño were awarded their second penalty of the day with Lanzarote keeper bringing down Rocha. Striker Valtierra converted and Lanzarote were three down before the hour.

The Rojillos began to get frustrated and received a string of yellow cards, then in the 79th minute centre back Faruk badly gave away a third penalty, received his second yellow card and again the Rojillos were forced to finish the match with only 10 men. Sub Rai made the score 4-0 as Lanzarote were made to suffer another 10 minutes.

Five minutes from time and sub Esteve completed the rout ensuring a depressing long journey home for Lanzarote. Next week Lanzarote face a daunting home match versus in form Sporting Gijón B. The Primers Liga´s B side are sure to be confident of achieving their third straight win on the bounce.

SWIFTS & BORO IN CUP REPLAY

Stage 5 of the SportTrades F.A.Cup Tracker will be replayed after Heybridge Swifts and Farnborough Town drew 0 - 0 in the 3rd Qualifying Round.

A quick update on the rules of the tracker. The winner of the Tracker is the club with most appearances in the Cup. Appearances are calculated, as you would expect, by the number of rounds a club appears in. Replays are not included as extra appearances. If by the end of the competition there is a tie, the winner will be determined by the following criteria 1) Number of Away wins 2) Number of Replays 3) Goal difference 4) Goals scored. If clubs can still not be separated after that, then there will be a tie. 1 bonus point will be added to the appearance total to the winner of the F.A.Cup

Sol y Futbol: Ten Men Defeated By Conquense

LANZAROTE 1 CONQUENSE 3

5th October 2009

The teams began the day with Conquense 5th from bottom and Lanzarote 2nd from bottom and both teams looked nervous in the opening minutes.

In the 7th minute the Lanzarote keeper failed to communicate with his centre back Faruk about the lack of danger as the ball was hoisted towards the edge of the box. Faruk decided to blast the ball away and mishit his clearance straight to Conquense’s striker Oscar Silva. The striker beat the defender and from the edge of the box shot low and the ball travelled tamely under keeper Floro to put his side into a 0-1 lead. The Lanzarote number one will be bitterly disappointed.

Lanzarote winger Toñito had a good effort blocked in the 16th minute but ten minutes later following another good run was tripped inside the area and a clear cut penalty decision was awarded. Surprisingly the man in black did not produce a red card as the Rojillos winger was clean through. The Lanzarote big man Rosmen stepped up and nervously stroked the ball towards the right hand corner but keeper Sebas read his moves and saved. The rebound fell to Ayoze Pérez and from three yards he managed to belt the ball high and over into the neighbouring car park.

Lanzarote were now dominant and great combination play from captain Vladamir and Toñito gave Rúben Rodriguez a chance from ten yards and the midfielder shot accurate but just failed with power as the visitors keeper again saved well.

In the 36th minute Toñito was brought down by two defenders on the edge of the area. Rúben Rodriguez curled the ball around the wall and saw his terrific effort rebound off the woodwork.

The game completely turned on its head two minutes from half time in a double disaster. An off the ball incident involving Lanzarote defender Santi Torres who was adjudged by the referee of elbowing his opponent. The ref awarded a penalty and gave the defender a red card. Conquense striker Santa Cruz demonstrated to the Lanzarote forward how a penalty should be taken by fiercely striking the ball into the left hand corner giving keeper Floro no chance and gave his side a shock 0-2 lead.

If you were to think things couldn’t get worse you would be wrong. Moments before half time a bizarre but fair challenge by two players giving 100 per cent, colliding foot to foot in a knee height challenge saw both somersault, leaving them flat out on the astro turf grasping for air. The Conquense midfielder rose after a couple of minutes but Lanzarote’s playmaker Jotha was still out for the count and stretchered off with a neck and foot injury.

The Lanzarote 10 men came out for the second half inspired. Manager Carmelo Hernández had brought on Englishman Ian Robinson and just
before the hour mark the Barnsley boy had a chance to reduce the deficit but unfortunately his effort from 10 yards was pushed away for a corner. From the resulting clearance from the corner sub José Manuel won the ball and unleashed a 25 yard missile into the bottom left hand corner and gave his side hope with the 1-2 score line.

The Rojillos can be proud of their fighting display but with temperatures in the mid 30´s and a man less, tiredness took its toll. In the 73rd minute a counter attack caught the Lanzarote defence off guard. A low cross to the near post was met by striker Martins inches ahead of the keeper and the Conquense forward chipped the grounded keeper guaranteeing his side three priceless away points and condemned the Rojillos to a morale battering six straight losses.

Nevertheless for entertainment value the game was a spectacle and a bargain at only 10€.

Next week Lanzarote travel to the only club lower than themselves in the league, Cacereño, in an already relegation six pointer

MIXED WEEKEND FOR CHIEFTAINS

It was a mixed weekend for the Chelmsford senior sides as the Chieftains picked up another 2 points on the road in Haringey while the Warriors went down fighting against the Romford Fury at home.

The Chieftains had previously beaten the Greyhounds 18-1 a few weeks previous so they knew they had a good chance of picking up another 2 points and for the travelling fans to North London they didn’t disappoint. Missing BT Williams with a minor injury and Rudi Dzurko (holiday) and Lee Brears who is on long term injury the remaining players showed their mettle and put in a performance the Chieftains fans have come to accept as standard

Early in the game they didn’t have it all their own way as the Greyhounds really restricted the Chieftains. However, once the first goal from Danny Hammond went in, the floodgates opened and it was one-way traffic from there on in. Hammond ended up with a hat-trick, as did Darren Brown. Two goals each to Blaho Novak and James Ayling and a goal a piece for Ross Brears and Sean Easton. Easton’s goal was one of those “did that really happen?” types as the puck ended up in the net after assistance from Ben Clements.

Clements was unlucky not to keep a clean sheet in goal, and the netting along the side of the rink. Ross Brears capped another excellent performance with a man of the match award going his way. It was another difficult night for the Greyhounds, who finished dead last in the National League 1 last season, as they were keen to show new coach Sergei Smolenko their skills.

The Chieftains return to action on Sunday 11th October at home against the Streatham Redskins, but they will be without solid defenseman Reece Covington who separated his shoulder during the game at Alexandra Palace. Covington is expected to be out for at least two weeks. Face off at the Riverside on Sunday is at the usual time of 6:30pm.

Things didn’t go the Warriors way as they battled hard in the National League 2 (South) Essex derby against the Romford Fury but were not able to capitalise on their superior shots on goal count as the Fury won with a score line of 4-1. It was the usual feisty affair as hockey fans expect in Essex and the game had an “old school” feel about it with aggression, finesse, flair and some excellent net minding at either end of the ice with Danny Kruse in particular standing out for the Fury and rightly picking up man of the match for the visitors. Lee Hounslow scored the Warriors consolation goal in the process of getting man of the match for the home side.

The Warriors are also in action this Sunday as they travel to South London to face Streatham’s second side, the Bruins, in a reverse of the division 1 fixture at the Riverside. Face off in Streatham is 7pm.

Strauss's England's Fanastic Summer Of Cricket - A Review

SportTrades Adam Dennehey Writing:

With the ICC Champions Trophy ending today, it brings an end to a fantastic summer of cricket for England. There have been ups and downs, some humiliating one day defeats but at the end of it, heroes emerged and the Ashes were regained in style at the Oval. As I am a massive cricket fan, I couldn't help but run through the summer.

That summer of cricket started way back in May when England under the full-time captaincy of Andrew Strauss beat a toothless West Indies team to retain the Wisden Trophy. Ravi Bopara at the time was England's man in form and he hit a century in each game to not only earn him plaudits but the team a 2-0 series win. It was just revenge for the hosts who bounced back from their disappointing defeat to the Windies in the Caribbean, where they lost the test series 1-0.

That series had it all, a laughable English batting collapse (51 all out) that gifted the Windies the win in Kingston. Other things of note were Strauss's 3 hundreds during the series, the match at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua being abandoned due to the dangerous outfield after a handful of over’s and the Windies saving 2 games due to England not declaring sooner than they should have. At the time the team looked disjointed, at least one bowler short and not exactly 'Ashes-Winning' material. However with the emergence of Bopara and Onions in those tests in May, the team looked fresh and was gaining backing in the press to regain the urn.

There were three 1-dayers next againgst the Windies which England won 2-0 with the first game being abandoned at Headingley without a ball being bowled. After those 1-dayers came the ICC World Twenty20 held in England in June. It was a thrilling competition to watch and must have been special as a player to take part in.

The competition was a success with high attendances at games and on television all over the world. Twenty20 cricket for purists of the game is seen as a threat and its no wonder when there's entertainment every over and a game lasts on average 2-3 hours. The winners of the tournament were Pakistan captained by Younus Khan and the spectacular all-rounder Shahid Afridi. England had a shaky start to the tournament losing to minnows the Netherlands in the first game. Stuart Broad could have won the game for England on his own in the final over of that match but somehow blew three run out attempts and dropped a catch of his own bowling. It was an embarrasing defeat but the team hit back to beat Pakistan to qualify for the next round. They slumped to a disappointing defeat to South Africa, but knocked MS Dhoni's India out in their second group game before falling to their old friends from the summer the West Indies on Duckworth-Lewis to go out of the tournament. The heroes for the Windies that day were Shiv Chanderpual and Ronny Sarwan who over the years have taken a liking to our bowlers, you just knew it had to be them to see the Islander's to a win.

Then in July came the Ashes. After much build up in the national press, the series everyone had been talking about finally got under way on the 8th of July. England scored 435 in their first innings, but Ponting's Australia scored 674/6 declared leaving England facing a tough task to draw the game. Going into the last day the hosts were still 219 runs behind with 8 wickets left and looked odds-on to lose the game at 102/5 at lunch. However gutsy batting from Paul Collingwood, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann kept Australia waiting to win the game. When Collingwood was finally dismissed for a heroic 74 off 245 balls (that lasted 17 minutes short of 6 hours) the game looked to be won for the Aussies. However determined batting from last pair Jimmy Anderson and Monty Panesar helped gain England the lead and saw out the overs left to claim a draw. It was jaw-dropping to watch, I will hold my hands up and say that i thought we had lost that game. It will be the only time Monty's batting helps save England a game!

After that the teams moved onto Lords for the second test. England deservedly won this game. The foundations were built by Strauss and Alastair Cook's 196 opening partnership for England. Cook fell 5 runs short of his century but Strauss kicked on and made 161. Good batting from the tail helped the hosts get to 425 all out. Australia were surprisingly bowled out in just over 60 overs with only Mike Hussey reaching 50. With the game there to be won, England batted positively in their second innings and after good contributions in the middle order, declared leaving Australia 522 to win with 2 days left in the test. Although vice captain Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin batted bravely in a partnership together the game was England's. Good bowling from Andrew Flintoff and Swann bowled the Aussies out, the margin of victory being 115 runs. Was great to see Flintoff get man of the match for his great spell of bowling having announced that he was retiring from test cricket before the game, how he has only 3 of 5-for's in test cricket only god knows!

The third test was hit by the weather, but England still put on a good performance bowling out Australia for 263 in their first innings. Good batting particularly from Flintoff who hit a quick 74 helped get England a lead, but the weather and good batting from Clarke and Marcus North helped save the game for the Aussies. Australia carried the momentum from saving the game at Edgbaston by annihilating England at Headingley. England's first innings was dreadful and at lunch on the first day they were 72-5, which very quickly became 102 all out. Knowing that they only needed a good first innings score, Australia batted sensibly and compiled a total of 445 all out with North hitting his second century of the series. Trailing by 343 runs, England ever looked like saving the game and slumped to 120-7 at one stage. Although Broad and Swann hit half centuries batting at 8 and 9 they were all out for 263 with Australia winning by an innings and eighty runs. It was a shambolic performance up at Leeds and the media were well within their right (for once) to have a go at the team, as we lost inside 3 days which in test cricket is rather unforgiveable.

After that came the final test at the Oval. Ravi Bopara was dropped in favour of Warwickshire's Jonathan Trott who came in for his test match debut and delivered. It was a case of the selectors being spot-on in their decision to play Trott, who in the run up to the game wasn't even getting a mention in the media who were calling for Rob Key or Mark Ramprakash (at 39 years old) to be selected instead. Batting at 5 Trott scored 160 runs in the match, with a fine century in the second innings putting England in charge of the game. Strauss and Ian Bell's half centuries helped get England up to 332 in their first innings on an Oval pitch that wasn't easy to bat on. With Flintoff playing his final test, before the game there was much talk who was to be his successor as the all-rounder in the side - in this match we got our answer.

Freddie's successor looks to be Stuart Broad who bowled an inspired spell to help bowl out Australia for 160 in just over 50 overs. Although England got reduced to 39/3 early on in their innings, Strauss hit 75 to get England in control. Then Trott took over becoming the 18th England player on test debut to get a 100. Supporting England's new hero down the order were Flintoff in his final test innings, Broad and Swann as Strauss declared with England 373/9. That as we know left Ponting's side a mammoth record breaking 546 to not only win the test but keep the Ashes with over 2 days play left.

Though Australia's openers Shane Watson and Simon Katich hit 80 to start the innings, they fell quickly leaving Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey at the crease. The pair batted brilliantly on a wearing wicket adding 127 in just short of 40 overs before Flintoff ran Australia's skipper out with a direct throw onto the stumps. It was to prove to be Flintoff's last defining moment in a test match and no-one was more surprised with the run out than the man himself. Australia were all out almost 40 overs later with Swann and Steve Harmison getting in amongst the wickets as the Aussies lost by 197 runs as the Ashes were regained. It was a magical moment and even though i was sitting in my main room, i felt like i was at the ground it was a marvelous spine-tingling moment. After the horrors of Headingley i did not expect us to turn it around in the final game - but they did thankfully!

Australia and Ponting were to get their revenge over the forthcoming 7 ODI matches in the Natwest Series as they romped to a 6-1 victory. With Flintoff taking a break from the game due to surgery, England's bowlers struggled in containing the Aussie batsman. Cameron White, Callum Ferguson and Cameron White all shone with the bat whilst returning Brett Lee was too much for England's batsman to handle. England's only win in the series came at Durham in the final match of the series when they chased down 177 to win with 4 wickets left. It was a blow to end the summer on abit of a low for England, why seven matches were needed after the tests was a strange decision to be honest. Credit to the Aussies who did all they had to do though.

Barley a fortnight after that heavy series lost, England headed off to the ICC Champions Trophy. In a group that contained Sri Lanka, the hosts South Africa and New Zealand - England were not expected to qualify to the semi-final stages of the tournament, but they did!. Sri Lanka were beaten by 6 wickets, James Anderson and Graham Onions doing the damage with the ball as the Kumar Sangakarra’s team were bowled out for 214. Although Strauss and Joe Denly departed early on the middle order of Paul Collingwood, Owais Shah and Eoin Morgan clicked seeing England home by 6 wickets. Two days later England beat South Africa by 22 runs at Centurion. Batting first England reached 323-8 with 12 sixes being hit. Shah hit a simply stunning 98, Collingwood 82 and Morgan a brisk 67. Although the Proteas’ captain Graeme Smith hit a fine 141 he received little support from his team mates as a fine fielding performance saw England win the game. It was a classic ODI game and one without England's best batsman Kevin Pietersen whose wound on his leg was still healing after surgery.

With the team already through to the next round, there was no pressure on the team for their final group game against New Zealand. The Kiwi’s needed to win the game to stay in the tournament and on a poor pitch at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg they bowled out England inside the 50 overs and got the 147 needed to win the game. Fate declared that England’s opponents in the semi’s would be Australia and this time on a good pitch at Centurion, England’s top order failed. Only through good batting from Collingwood and Luke Wright and big hitting fromTim Bresnan were Australia set a competitive score to chase down. Although Onions struck early for England, Ponting and Watson hit unbeaten centuries as the Aussie’s won by 9 wickets. Today Australia have gone on to claim the tournament beating New Zealand in the final, Watson hitting another unbeaten century.

So at the end of a fantastic summer of cricket it’s Australia who have ended with the glory but the important thing this summer was for England to regain the Ashes. Heroes such as Flintoff and Steve Harmison look to be on their way out for England. But new ones such as Trott, Swann, Anderson and Broad have emerged and Adil Rashid is improving all the time. The future looks bright for England who will need to continue their good performances because in around 13 months time they will be heading to Australia where they will attempt to retain the Ashes – which will be a tough task. Roll on the winter tour to South Africa and whatever 2010 brings for the team!
