Men in Black: A Bonus for Harpenden at Welwyn

Harpenden form continues, this match report posted in full from HRFC website.

Welwyn 12 Harpenden 29

Harpenden continued their good form with their first four-try bonus point victory away at Welwyn on Saturday.

The Men in Black’s forwards produced their best 40 minutes of rugby of the season, but their normally dependable backs failed to sparkle initially.

From the outset Harpenden, with Jonny Macdonald at the helm, dominated proceedings in spite of playing into the strong wind and up the slope. Messer’s Peck and Hoare created serious inroads in the home side’s defense creating gaps out-wide, but a combination of over-running the pass and sloppy handling contributed to Welwyn’s try line remaining intact.

On at least four separate occasions in the first half alone Harpenden squandered opportunities to score, but their collective patience paid off in the 30th minute when winger Smith scored his third try in as many games.

A quickly-taken tap penalty by Alan Barton surprised the Welwyn defense, and his scurrying run found Kearns who found the grateful hands of Smith, who powered his way over from 10 yards. The conversion was missed, but Harpenden found themselves in the ascendency.

A move that started in Harpenden’s half, culminated in centre Jonny Barton burrowing his way over after good work from Payne and Peck. The diminutive centre stepped up and added the extras from the touchline to cement the Men in Black’s position as half time approached.

HT Welwyn 0 Harpenden 12

Despite their advantage on the scoreboard and with the wind and slope to their advantage Harpenden were expected to finish the game and garner the bonus point quickly.

Welwyn had other ideas; they tightened up their fringe attacks and played a less expansive game, waiting for Harpenden to infringe. In their haste, Harpenden infringed at the breakdown and were continually marched back as the penalty count climbed. Despite this Harpenden’s black wall of defense marshaled by flanker Barton didn’t look like leaking.

However, in the 60th minute Welwyn’s backrow broke down the blindside and, despite the close attentions of Kearns and Hoare dotted down out wide. The conversion was missed, but Welwyn began to ooze confidence.

Their second score came from the restart and was courtesy of several missed tackles. Despite the attentions of MacDonald and the fact the Welwyn’s player had a foot in touch, Welwyn were awarded the score and to add insult to injury, the touchline conversion was nailed.

Winger Haddock, an earlier replacement for the injured Muskett, was himself replaced by Captain Tennant, who steadied the rickety Harpenden ship. Harpenden’s forward’s learnt their lessons quickly, ensuring the breakdown and tackle area where clear of black shirts to avoid any doubt.

The trick worked, and a charged-down kick by Dumbleton enabled MacDonald to jot down under the posts, to establish Harpenden’s 7 point lead. The Men in Black then played 15 minutes of intelligent rugby, retaining possession and kicking the corners with unerring accuracy.

Harpenden’s tactics eventually paid dividends, with Dumbleton exploiting numbers in Welwyn’s defense, cantering past the fullback to present Barton with a kickable opportunity, the lead was extended to 14. With the last kick of the game Harpenden’s mercurial number 13, Barton, added three points to his personal tally of 14 for the day, to condemn Welwyn to another loss.

The Sting: Hull Wasps throguh to 2nd Round of National Shield

Hull Wasps 118 Tees Valley Mohawks II 72

HULL Wasps booked a trip to the second round of the National Shield for the third time in three years after crushing Tees Valley Mohawks 118-72.

Hull launched themselves out of the blocks with an incredible 41-8 first quarter in player-coach John Brignell’s first home game in charge.

Brignell led by example with 30 points, 14 coming in his side’s dominant opening quarter, to lead all scorers against a Tees Valley side that could only raise five players.

The 6ft 8in centre said: “I was impressed with the way we played as a team today. We shot the lights out from the outside. It seemed that when players started hitting their three-pointers, it inspired confidence in the other players to make their shots.

“We still need some work on the defensive end as there were times when Tees Valley’s players had easy looks at the hoop, but we will work on that before our next game.”

Centre James Rayner came off the bench to score 20 points. Captain Jamie Goodwin hit 19, including 17 in the second quarter, guard Adrian Blatherwick hit 16, including four three-pointers, and guard Matt Fawcett added 15.

Wasps will now face Durham Wildcats II at home in the second round after they defeated Middlesbrough Lions by just 2 points on Sunday afternoon. The home tie will take place on Sunday 24th October, 3:00pm.

Sol y Futbol (ish). Lanzarote draw in Tenerife.

Sol y Futbol would like to wish Anna’s Dad a very happy 70th Birthday. Please return back from Sweden,to Ian,as quick as possible. I mean, he can sell you a shirt on the stall at Teguise but as he mentions, give him a keyboard and well, see for yourself. He even manages to get a dig in about the weather. You can tell winter is coming.

C.D. MARINO 1 LANZAROTE 1

26th September 2010

U.D. Lanzarote loses their 100 per cent record in Tenerife against last years play off finalists Club Deportiva Marino.

On a pitch where Lanzarote have only won once in eight attempts a point will not seem such a bad result. The Rojillos still remain joint top as Tenerife B could only manage a 1-1 draw on the Saturday so both teams have 13 points out of a possible fifteen.

A short report of the match will follow next week because my better half has abandoned me and my two children so she can pop off to Sweden for a week to celebrate her Dads 70th birthday.

My knowledge of computers is about as good as the weather in Britain in February and the other 11 months of the year.

Ian Lane will be back to normal next week.

Kult & Punk report from St Pauli, as they fall to Dortmund

Kult & Punk report from St Pauli, as they fall to Dortmund. Well to be honest the falling came after the entertainment at Zoe’s.

FC St Pauli 1-3 Borussia Dortmund

Borrussia Dortmund racked up their fifth successive victory with another convincing victory at the Millerntor against FC St. Pauli.

Having opened the scoring on 17 minutes when Kevin Großkreutz headed in Shinji Kagawa's cross following an excellent exchange between the Japanese midfielder and Lucas Barrios, Dortmund looked to have the game under control. However, the Yellow-Blacks were in for a surprise.

Less than ten minutes later, Charles Takyi embarked on a clever solo run before finding Fin Bartels. The young German flicked a delightful ball into the path of the arriving Rouwen Hennings, who slotted past Roman Weidenfeller to level the scores and send the home fans wild.

But the visitors are a team in form and rightly restored their advantage five minutes into the second period. Barrios turned his marker inside out on the left side of the box before playing across the box for Mario Götze, he pulled back for Kagawa, and the in-form Asian stroked into the far corner from ten metres out.

Just 11 minutes later and the travelling BVB faithful knew they were on course for another three points. Barrios turned on the edge of the box before lashing a powerful drive goalwards. It was too hot for Thomas Kessler to handle, and Großkreutz was on hand to nick the ball over the floundering goalkeeper and roll into the empty net.

Dortmund go second in the table as a result of the victory, up next for Jürgen Klopp's charges is a classic encounter at home to FC Bayern München. Defeat for Pauli leaves them in ninth.

The waiting is almost over.....

After a difficult summer with hold-ups in the multi-million pound refurbishment of the Riverside ice rink in Chelmsford, the season is almost upon us and the club is raring to go. Saturday 2nd of October sees the 2010-11 Chieftains take to the ice for the first time in anger in what will be a tough first game away to Wightlink Raiders on the Isle of Wight, followed up by a tricky game away in Oxford 24hours later. This all leads into ice hockey returning to the heart of Essex when the Chieftains will do battle with the Streatham Redskins on Sunday 10th October at 6:30pm. The club is excited about playing in front of their great fans again and even more so in the much-improved ice rink. With new changing rooms, toilet facilities, new ice pad and catering areas, as well as a new scoreboard it is hoped to vastly improve the matchnight experience for fans, players and officials. The work which has cost over £3m has shown the dedication to ice sports and leisure facilities from the local council and the club would like to take this opportunity to thank the council and the contractors for the work they have put in in making the work happen and keeping the club informed of developments and giving Chelmsford an ice rink to be proud of. The Chieftains organisation would also like to thank the EIHA and the other clubs in the league for their patience throughout what has been a roller-coaster summer.

Chieftains head coach Dean Birrell said "We've had a tough off-season and preparations haven't been ideal, but we've made the best of it and I'm sure come face off on Saturday we'll be ready. We've worked hard on a variety of things away from the ice, but when we have trained on the ice things have gone very well. All the players have been working hard and training as much as possible and we're ready to go.

I've said that Wightlink have improved and I believe it will be an ideal test for us as our first outing for the season. Jeremy Cornish has built a hard-working, tough hitting side and the small ice surface works in their favour a lot of the time, but we've got the speed element and we've got guys who are as prepared to check and hit back, so it should be a great game. Oxford are a different proposition. They work hard, are well-drilled and are tough to break down and there is a reason they are top of the league. No team in this league should be taken lightly and I know it's an old cliché, but this season the league really has got better and stronger and we've had to up our game as well. I believe the players we've brought in have brought something to the team to give us that extra that we were perhaps missing at times last year. I still believe we have the capability and the players to win the league, but it will be tougher now but it's down to us to show the determination and professionalism to put the problems behind us and get on with the job in hand."

Away from the ice the club have been working hard to secure new sponsors this summer, as well as retaining existing ones, and most of the main sponsors from last season have agreed to stay on board. The club have welcomed Grants SEAT, amongst others, into the fold as big name supporters and are still looking for further entrants to the 'big screen draw'. The draw will take place at the first home game on October 10th and first prize is a website link from the Chieftains site (Over 1.7m views last year) and an advert on the new big screen at the rink. All entrants will get a link from the club's site and second prize is a half-page advert in the clubs programme for the season. Entry closes now on 8th October.

Further to that, the club have also agreed to support Autism Anglia as their chosen charity for the season and will be supporting and raising money for this excellent organisation throughout the season.

For further information on the 'big screen draw' please visit www.chelmsfordchieftains.co.uk or contact Pete Lewis via pete.lewis@sporttrades.co.uk

Stand Up For the Irons

SportTrades support the campaign of Scunthorpe United and the FSF, to keep Scunthorpe standing. The post below was taking in full from the Football Supporters Federation recent newsletter.

At the end of the 2010/2011 season, government bureaucracy dictates that Scunthorpe United's Glanford Park must be converted into an all-seater stadium, simply because the club has been successful in reaching and remaining in the Championship for three years. This makes no sense. Keep Scunthorpe Standing wants the standing area to remain.

Glanford Park's standing area is modern and safe, and complies with all of the latest government safety standards. Morecambe FC, two divisions below Scunthorpe, has just moved into a new stadium – with standing areas very similar to those at Glanford Park. If this is acceptable for Morecambe, it should be acceptable for Scunthorpe, too.

Converting Glanford Park to all-seating would knock 1,000 off the capacity of what is already the smallest ground in the league. More people want to enjoy and share in the good times, yet as a result of them more people will be locked out.

Supporters are being punished for the success of the team, while the club face being forced to waste money on a redevelopment that nobody wants, to a stadium in which they will be able to sell fewer tickets.

Keep Scunthorpe Standing is the campaign that has been launched to challenge the ruling, and we'll be lobbying the Government and appropriate authorities to keep the standing area at Glanford Park.

To do this, we'll need your help.

Find out more, and register your support for our campaign by joining Keep Scunthorpe Standing on Facebook.

Hear more about the campaign, with Keep Scunthorpe Standing on the radio - a discussion from BBC Radio Humberside, with the campaign debate featured at 15 minutes and 63 minutes into the programme.

Midweek Kult & Punk: St Pauli Win away.

The 2 lads stayed in Zoes Bar for this one, for the best. Thank you to the official Bundasliga website for the report. On Saturday the boys host Borussia Dortmund.

Borussia Mönchengladbach 12 St. Pauli

Substitutes Gerald Asamoah und Florian Bruns delivered the next blow to Mönchengladbach’s rapidly declining season, earning St. Pauli a 2-1 comeback win on the road.

Borussia coach Michael Frontzeck opted to send out a team virtually unchanged from the one that took a 7-0 mauling off Stuttgart at the weekend and the move appeared to be paying off when Juan Arango put the Foals in front in the 25th minute. At that point the lead was fully merited, with the Gladbach defence looking reasonably shipshape again, albeit that they were not under too much duress from the St. Pauli forward line.

Things changed after the break however, as the Hamburg side increasingly seized the initiative. Asamoah brought them level in the 66th minute, just three minutes after coming off the bench. And five minutes after that, fellow substitute Florian Bruns stepped up to slam home what would prove to be the winner from the spot, after Roel Brouwers had fouled Fin Bartels - yet another substitute - inside the box.

The defeat leaves Gladbach fourth from bottom, and their misery was complete when striker Mohamadou Idrissou was sent off in added time after picking up a second yellow card.

Sol y Futbol: Rosman Nets 3 to make it 4 out of 4

Ian Lane reports from Arrecife as the Rojillos continue their unbeaten run. They lie 2nd in the table on goal difference.

LANZAROTE 4 UD TEROR 1

19th September 2010

The Rojillos make it four wins out of four games largely with the help of their powerful frontman Rosman who scored his first hat-trick in a Rojillo shirt.

Lanzarote looked dangerous from the start. Only a minute had lapsed before Jotha set up Ayoze with a perfectly timed pass but his strike destined for goal was deflected for a corner by a desperate lunge from the defender.

A couple of minutes later and winger Toñito robbed possession on the edge of the box but his strike went inches wide of the upright.

A goal was imminent. In the 10th minute a cross from the right was nodded low and home by Rosman exposing the defensive frailties of the Gran Canarian side.

In the 18th minute U.D. Teror had their first chance of the match. Striker Yonay controlled the ball on the edge of the area but his half hearted strike flew into the side netting. The Gran Canarian side were edging their way back into the game and in the 21st minute Yonay managed to round the Rojillos keeper Ruymán and looked destined to score but as his angle narrowed he saw his effort rebound off the upright and away to safety.

This proved to be what was needed to wake up the Rojillos and from then on completely dominated the match. Six minutes before the break good work from Toñito who robbed possession in the danger zone and fed midfielder Ayoze, his shot was fierce and deadly which gave the Rojillos a two goal cushion to take into the break.

There wasn’t much change with the state of play in the opening stages of the second half as the Conejeros (locals) went in search of the killer third goal.

Twelve minutes after the restart and Ayoze centred in a cross from the right which found an unmarked Rosman who headed home his second and his teams third of the match.

The Rojillos then took their foot off the gas feeling that their job was done. A mistake which can be painful in football. Passes were going astray, captain Rubén Rodríguez and Jotha began to get frustrated and exchanged a few harsh words.

Teror capitalized on this error and in the 62nd minute pulled a goal back through Orlando. The sub had only been on the pitch a couple of minutes and was put through with just the keeper to beat. He neatly passed his shot wide of keeper Ruymán and low into the right hand corner of the net giving his side a glimmer of hope.

The Rojillos rode the mild storm and in the final minute of play deservedly got a fourth. A beautifully swung in cross from the right found Rosman timing his jump to perfection and superbly hanging in the air to nod home for his hat-trick.

A good display from the Rojillos was not enough to keep them in top spot. Tenerife B won 4-0 and go ahead on goal difference. Next week Lanzarote travel to Tenerife and face a side that missed out on promotion last season via the play offs. A win for Lanzarote here against CD Marino would see the Rojillos go 10 points clear of their rivals.

2-0min 39 Ayoze Pérez
3-0min 57 Rosman

Men in Black: Harpenden win the Local Derby against Hemel

Men in Black, made it 2 out of 2 with this fine win against Hemel. This match report was taking in full from the Harpenden RFC website.

Harpenden 17 Hemel Hempstead 0

Harpenden continued their good start to the season with a convincing 17-0 win over local rivals Hemel on Saturday. Redbourn Lane played host to a packed crowd in glorious playing conditions in a local derby which only came to life in the final quarter.

The Men in Black began the game in positive fashion, creating chances and smashing through holes in the Hemel defense. One such break allowed second row Dumbleton to enjoy a 50 meter gallop only to throw a blind pass to the non-existent support.

A clash of styles with the visiting side was obvious from the outset; Hemel opting for the brute force approach and Harpenden for the attacking/offloading game which has served them so well. Harpenden’s only inhibitor was their charity at the breakdowns, conceding numerous penalties at critical times of the match.

With Captain Tennant leading the backline from the front it was only a matter of time before Harpenden breached Hemel’s defense, and it was some slick handling that created the space for Muskett, to do what he does with such élan and beat his opposite man to touch down out wide. From the resulting score Tennant had to leave the field, introducing Cooper to fullback and Payne to the helm.

The second part of the first half, which threatened to be a dominant one for the Men in Black, became disjointed via a combination of a sizeable penalty count and individual errors creeping in to normally faultless individuals.

With Hemel enjoying a large slice of the possession it wasn’t long before the away side were presented with their first opportunity, a skewed penalty kick Hemel’s best chance. With the penalty count stacking up against the home team Tom Hoare found his way to the familiarity of the sin bin. Harpenden having to endure 5 tough minutes prior to half time with only 14 bodies.

Half Time: Harpenden 5 Hemel 0

Half time came and went and the Men in Black began the second with gusto. Cornthwaite, an irritant for both teams (on occasion) was beginning to assert himself at the turnover, and with Read turning the screw on the Hemel kicker, Harpenden profited.

It must be said too, that the Harpenden pack as an eight, were enjoying the upper hand over their counterparts, with the scrums in particular proving a rich source of possession.

Harpenden’s next score came directly from a lineout deep in Hemel territory. Dumbleton’s monopoly of the set piece gave quick ball to Payne, who’s inside pass to Read created inroads in the Hemel defense. Some quick ruck ball enabled Barton to feed Blake, whose footwork attracted the attentions of the opposition tacklers, before Jonny Barton slipped through several blue and white shirts, dotting down neatly under the posts.

The hosts then enjoyed a purple patch, and began to work the phases with little fuss or panache. Again a combination of quick ball at the breakdown and some deft handling from centre Kearns and winger Ashley Smith, found the grateful clutches of a rehabilitated Tom Hoare, who slid in under the posts in the process opening up a 17-0 lead.

With Daniel Tennant making way for new signing Jali and Green entering the fray, Harpenden’s ability to switch off for periods was put to the test yet again. The penalty count began to surge, seeing scrum half Barton enter the sin bin for a team offence, and individual errors came to the fore. However, Hemel’s route-one attacking game was no match for Harpenden’s well drilled defense, and try as they might the away side got little change out of their counterparts.

To a man Harpenden closed “shop” around the ruck area and out wide, with Kearns, Jonny Barton and Cornthwaite immense on the back foot. Despite Hemel’s numerical advantage their inability to proffer points saw their heads visibly bow, and the Men in Black put together several phases of high level rugby.

A neat show and go from Payne, gave Kearns a chink of light, the centre bursting through and linking up well with Jali and Muskett, only to be thwarted at the last. As the game entered its twilight tempers flared, and both sides were reduced to 14 men, but this failed to knock Harpenden from their stride, as the Men in Black again worked several promising openings, however this time they failed to trouble the scorers and garner the bonus point on offer.

"The Mayor" takes on new role as Captain

In traditional Chieftains fashion the election of club captain for the 2010-11 was held this week and Danny Wright was elected to wear the 'C' for the forthcoming season. The self-styled "Mayor of Chelmsford" Wright has been a regular fixture in the Chieftains line up for a number of seasons, barring a short spell at Romford, and was delighted to be elected captain by his team-mates.

Wright said "I love playing hockey in Chelmsford. We have a great set-up here with the right mix of youth and experience with some great characters in the locker room to help lift team spirit. There is no better feeling in ice hockey than coming out onto the ice at the Riverside in front of our loyal fans who are always giving words of encouragement to the players and getting behind us every night of the season. We'll be looking to them to be loud and proud at the Riverside and make it a place no club wants to come to play. We've not had an ideal preparation for the season with the problems at the rink, but we're determined that when the first game faces off we're ready to take on anyone and give them a real test. I'd like to take a moment to thank the players for giving their support to me and I am really excited about captaining my hometown team."

Also elected by the players were the two alternate captains and they were former captain Tom Long who has returned to his roots from spells in Basingstoke and the Isle of Wight, as well as solid no-nonsense defenceman Sean Easton who has signed for another season at Essex's premier ice hockey club.

Away from on-ice matters and the news from the rink is promising as all the work is on schedule and the revised opening date of the 5th October looks quite likely to be hit and as such the Chieftains will be able to take to the ice in Chelmsford on Sunday 10th October when Streatham Redskins are in town.

Kult & Punk: Petric saves a point for Hamburg

Kult and Punk make it from their bar stools in time to post this blog. Probably not, however, when we find the provenance of this report we will attribute it as soon as possible. So, here is their (more than likely) nicked report of the port city derby.

FC St Pauli 1 HSV Hamburg 1

A stunning late strike from Mladen Petric salvaged a draw for Hamburger SV in their first trip to city rivals FC St. Pauli in almost eight years.

Following a closely-matched affair in both halves, Fabian Boll looked to have secured the points for the home side when he fired home on 77 minutes, but Croatian international Petric's dipping volley ensured the visitors left with a share of the spoils

With AC/DC blaring from the speakers, the teams emerged to a cauldron of support at the sold-out Millerntor, and it was the hosts who began the more positively as Fabian Boll tried his luck from distance, his right foot strike sailing high and wide. HSV keeper Frank Rost was forced into his first save just a few minutes later from Rouwen Hennings' header.

Chances few and far between

The home side first came under threat when Bastian Oczipka lost possession to Jonathan Pitroipa on half way. The Burkina Faso winger sprinted to the by-line, but his low cross was heroically cleared by Markus Thorandt with Ruud van Nistelrooy awaiting. Surprise starter Tomas Rincon sent a low long-range effort into the side netting shortly before the break, but in truth it was the fans who had provided the major highlight of the first half with their infernal cheering.

The teams remained unchanged for the second period and true to form chances remained at a premium. Ze Roberto's corner caused a brief moment of confusion at the back for St. Pauli, while at the other end visiting goalkeeper Rost was almost caught out with the ball at his feet by Hennings. Deniz Naki was then sent through twice, but first Rincon and then Rost were on hand to avert the danger.

Petric levels the scores

With the hosts at least looking the more likely, Ebbers' low cross from the left was sent narrowly wide by Carsten Rothenbach on 75 minutes for what was the first real chance of the half. The pressure continued, and the right-back was celebrating with the rest of the Millerntor just two minutes later as the unmarked Boll fired in from the edge of the box after being teed up by substitute Gerald Asamoah to put Pauli in front.

Their joy was short-lived. With just two minutes to go Croatian international Mladen Petric controlled a loose ball 25 yards from goal before firing an exquisite left-foot volley into the far corner to maintain HSV's unbeaten start to the season and avoid a first defeat to their cross-city rivals in 33 years.

Pauli: Kessler - Rothenbach, Zambrano, Thorandt, Oczipka - Lehmann, Boll - Bruns (Bartels 67'), Hennings (Asamoah 74'), Naki (M. Kruse 84') - Ebbers

HSV: Rost - Rincon, Westermann, Mathijsen, Jansen - Jarolim (Trochowski 80'), Ze Roberto - Pitroipa, Guerrero (Petric 62'), Elia (Choupo-Moting 80') - van Nistelrooy

Goals: 1-0 Boll (77), 1-1 Petric (88')

Attendance at the Millerntor: 23,794 (sold-out)

We understand the report was taking in full from the official Budasliga translated website, thanks chaps.

Englands Women Qualify for the World Cup

England Women make it to the finals of the World Cup. Our match report provided in full,  from our friends at Telegraph Sport.

Switzerland 2 England 3 (agg 2 - 5)

England booked a place in next year's Fifa Women's World Cup with a 3-2 victory over Switzerland on Thursday night.

The success in Wohlen wrapped up a 5-2 aggregate success, after Hope Powell's team had won the first leg in Shrewsbury 2-0 last week.
An early chance to calm the nerves went begging when Kelly Smith - England's all-time leading goalscorer - missed a 12th-minute penalty. Smith won the spot-kick, going down under a challenge from Rahel Graf, but dragged her effort wide.

Smith righted the wrong 10 minutes before half-time, tapping in from close range after Eniola Aluko had failed to convert a cross from Alex Scott.

It was 2-0 two minutes later when Aluko beat Maris Brunner with a low shot - but the Swiss were given hope just before half-time.

Ramona Bachmann pulled a goal back, then England goalkeeper Rachel Brown was harshly dismissed after tangling with Bachmann in the net seconds after the goal.

However, Fara Williams calmed visiting nerves, converting a penalty awarded when Smith was fouled by Caroline Abbe.

Although Switzerland's Selina Zumbuhl reduced the arrears with the goal of the night, a 25-yard free-kick, it failed to take the gloss of England's success.

The CRY Philips Test My Heart Tour2010

Cardiac Risk in the Young (C.R.Y) are a charity close to SportTrades.  We would ask you all to find out more about the charity and support its fundraising events.  The charity campaigns to get screening available for our young people. Many football clubs within the UK now screen young players and many more sport organisations are committing themselves to screening. In many European countries it is a requirement for the future talent of sport be tested, detection leads to prevention. On a wider scale we urge all young people to attend a Test My Heart tour venue and be screened.  The likelihood is you will be fine, but 12 young people a week, who appear to fit and healthy, die of heart disease. Thankfully Evander Sno continues to make progress in Holland, but he is a prime example of what could happen.

The CRY Philips Test My Heart Tour 2010 aims to reduce the number of heart deaths amongst apparently fit and healthy young people.

The second CRY Philips Test My Heart Tour will kick-off in Durham on 18th September 2010. This is the second free heart screening tour of its kind in England - the first being the CRY Philips Test My Heart Tour in 2009 - and has been made possible by the fundraising efforts of CRY families whose lives have been affected by young sudden cardiac death; and by the support of health and well-being company Philips.

This national campaign aims to reduce the number of undiagnosed heart conditions in young people, by testing the hearts of over 2,500 14 to 35 year-olds, to identify heart conditions which could potentially prove fatal if left untreated.

To book a FREE appointment at one of the 9 tour locations (27 screening dates in total) simply go to http://www.testmyheart.org/

Staying put until the final whistle

We enjoyed this article. Especially after the footballing weekend that the Fergusons family had. While we are here, our thoughts go out to Tony Pullis who lost his mother on Monday. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go too Antonio Valencia after last nights injury and Evander Sno who suffered a suspected heart attack while playing for Ajax reserves.

15 September ~ After 55 minutes of Scotland's Euro 2012 qualifying group game with Liechtenstein last Wednesday, I made a promise to myself. If the score remained Scotland 0 Liechtenstein 1, I would never watch another game of football as long as I lived. I wouldn't look at scores, or tables, or anything. If people started talking about football, I'd stick my fingers in my ears and start singing "Giiiiiiirls just wanna have fun" in a really loud and annoying way until they moved off. But of course the score changed, and Scotland gloriously won the game with a brilliantly contrived 97th-minute header. The most amazing thing about that goal, though, was the number of fans still in the stadium to witness it.

Why, you wonder, had most of them not already left in disgust after burning their kilts, bursting their bagpipes and casting one last glance at Hampden before vowing never to return? A cynic might say: "It's because they thought 1-1 was actually quite a good result for Scotland, and they were just waiting to applaud their boys off the park." But there's another reason. They simply couldn't leave the stadium. Whether it was a desire to see the winning goal or just morbid fascination, it seemed that at the end of the game, the stands were heaving with jubilant, and massively relieved, fans. Who will now always be able to claim that they were there "the night we almost lost to f***ing Liechtenstein".

There are fans who have faith and fans who don't. The fans who don't are the ones who leave early. Personally, I'm like the Scotland fans. I just can't leave, no matter how bored or disillusioned I am. I once tried to leave a Swiss Cup semi-final between Grasshopper and amateur side Red Star Zürich – Grasshopper were 6-0 up, there were five minutes to go and the stadium was seven-eighths empty. But I was still worried I might miss something, like Red Star scoring six goals in five minutes. Or, failing that, a bald eagle landing on the pitch, or the referee dropping his shorts and mooning in the direction of FIFA HQ. You just never know, do you? And so after exiting the stand, I kept stopping at the stadium portals and standing there to see out the game's dying moments. And I just caught sight of Grasshopper scoring a seventh. Yep, looks like they're through.

I thought of this again on Saturday as Everton fans celebrated their second goal in stoppage time to claim a draw against Manchester United. I was mainly thinking of all the fans who'd left already, because there were a lot of empty seats. I was imagining what they felt as they heard the first muted cheer from outside the stadium. "Ah, a consolation goal, ah well, 3-1, 3-2, what's the difference, there's no way a team like Manchester United give up two goals in injury time… [hears massive, unrestrained, gobsmacked roar]. Oh great, we got a point. Hooray. I'm glad for us, I really am. But why did they have to wait until I left before they scored twice? And why did I leave early? [Holds head in hands and collapses to the floor] Why did I do that?"

And that's what I utterly fail to understand. Why would you pay £25, £35, £45 or more for a ticket to a 90-minute football match and then not watch the whole thing? Of course, the historical precedent of being 3-1 down to Man Utd with just two minutes of stoppage time to play could lead you to logically conclude, as a pessimistic Evertonian, that this will be another bad Saturday and you'd rather beat the traffic than wait to see the sight of glory-spoiled away fans cheering at the final whistle. But for most fans, there are only a few moments when you get to unleash wild, unfettered screams of crude joy in the company of several thousand others who are simultaneously going nuts. You have to work for those moments of collective glee. As in life, you endure hours of tedium and disappointment, but just occasionally you're rewarded with a treasured moment of surprise and delight. In fact, it's all we live for.
