Redbridge Elite win the League Cup

Redbridge Elite 5 Castle United 3

The Ilford & District League Cup Final was played out at Wadham Lodge, Walthamstow last night. Castle United, undefeated in the league, took on Redbridge Elite lying 3rd in the table after a recent run of great form. The odds were stacked in Castle's favour, although Redbridge had beaten them in another cup Semi Final and their league meetings had been close.

Redbridge started the brightest and had steamed into a 3-0 lead. Leon Joseph opened the scoring for Elite early in the match. Leon Young made it 2-0 as he followed up on Asher Johnson saved penalty and Daniel Tesphay put Elite 3-0 up. Redbridge had controlled the game, with all Castle attacks been dealt with and cleared. As the first half wore on Castle started to dominate the match. Just before half time they converted a penalty to take them into the interval trailing 3-1.

The second half continued as much as the first half ended. Redbridge were put under a lot of pressure, and a beautiful free kick left the keeper with no chance and the gap was closed to 3-2. Redbridge then soaked up attack after attack from Castle. A wonder Vincent Edwards free kick increased their lead to 4-2. The goal settled Redbridge nerves, and Asher Johnson put the Final beyond doubt as he rounded the keeper and calmly slotted the ball home, 5-2. With the Redbridge Elite name being engraved onto the cup, Castle United managed to sneak a consolation near to full time.

Only founded since 2006, the Redbridge Elite Management and players have done an amazing job and long may it continue. Congratulations Lads

Redbridge Elite Squad: Damien Williams (Manager) Adam Fapowle, Kane Boval, Mattias Lionel,Junior Dianfombia, Sean McAvoy, Vincent Edwards, Leon Joseph, Daniel Tesphay, Mikael Spencer, Leon Young, Carl Vernae, Asher Johnson, Steven McCormick, Steven Anderson, Akin Nidai, Kelly Kabingi and all those not mentioned who have played their part.

Outside The Long Room: Twenty20 Previewing And County Reviewing

Regular visitors to SportTrades Report might remember a fortnight or so ago we announced a new Cricket feature coming to the blog called 'Outside The Long Room'. It's being produced by SportTrades very own James Drew who will be giving his thoughts on all things cricket including international and domestic news. Throughout the summer we're be hearing more from Mr Drew with updates on his local side, Breadsall Cricket Club who play in the Derbyshire County Cricket League.

In this week's OTLR (hows that for an acronym) James previews the ICC World Twenty20 in the wake of the IPL finishing and reviews the start of the County Championship which has seen his favourite county side Derbyshire start of well winning 2 out of their first 3 games. Australian overseas start Chris Rogers has continued his fine form from last season with 3 hundreds so far.

Anyway i'll leave the talking to James, so to speak.

Seeing as it’s been well over a couple of weeks since my initial blog, I feel that now is the right time to share with you all my latest thoughts on all things cricket related.

On the International stage, with the final of the IPL (Indian Premier League) now all over other than the aftermath of charges surrounding Lalit Modi’s conduct, of which, I’m not going to speculate on or pass comment, all eyes will now head west (depending on where you located on the globe of course), to the ICC World Twenty20 in the Caribbean.

Going back to the IPL, the tournament was won by the Chennai Super Kings who beat the Mumbai Indians by 22 runs on Sunday just gone. SK Raina picked up the man of the match award, mainly as a result of scoring the only 50 in the match with a brisk 57 off just 35 balls and he also picked up a wicket too in Mumbai’s reply. Having only won half of their fourteen matches during the league stages, Chennai definitely saved their better cricket for the latter stages of the competition, especially as Mumbai had topped the group stages with ten wins from their fourteen matches.

The little master “Sachin Tendulkar”, captain of the Mumbai Indians ran away with the award of player of the tournament, largely down to finishing the tournament as the leading run scorer. Whether cricket lovers around the world are in favour of the IPL or not, based on its growing success it appears that it is hear to stay I’m afraid. Exciting matches played in front of bumper crowds with the best one-day players in the world competing against one another is bound to have its fans, though it appears that the jury is still out for many of the traditionalists amongst us.

Moving onto the ICC World Twenty20. The 17 day tournament with 12 teams (4 groups of 3) starts tommroow. For those who remember, Pakistan won the event last year held in England before the Ashess series started. Pakistan sadly have been affected by political and internal issues of late, which has resulted in many of the best and most senior players receiving hefty bans. That said, recent tournaments suggest that you can’t right Pakistan off, and if the forecasted early thunderstorms for the tournament remain out in the middle and not spread to the Pakistani dressing room, then they could be pushing all the way to retain their title. One thing that any cricket fan should never do is write of Shahid Afridi although everyone can certainly expect the unpredictable from the one the Pakistani fans call Boom Boom.

Australia and South Africa are both strong favourites too, though last years tournament shows that if you do slip up in one of your two group matches, teams could be packing their bags and heading home much sooner than planned.
A big shame for the Ozzies is hearing that Brett Lee, having retired from test cricket to concentrate on one-day cricket so to prolong his career is now injured again, so will therefore miss the tournament. It's a blow to the popular player but Australia can call on Yorkshire's Ryan Harris who has broken into the team of late. Even without Lee, they still have enough fire power with the ball and down the innings with the bat, I predict that Mitchell Johnson, Cameron White and Shane Watson will all have a good world cup.

Turning my attention to the 4 “minnows” of the competition: Ireland, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, well, I expect them all to impress, but I can’t see any surprises this year I’m afraid, and I feel that non of these 4 teams will make the Super 8 stage. It's a tremendous achievement that the Afghan team qualifed for the tournament after many years of struggle back in their own country, now they have a chance to play on the big stage. Every cricket fan will wish them luck.

With regards England, then I’m really looking forward to see how our adopted sons from SA perform at the top of the order (Michael Lumb and Craig Kieswetter that is), with the hard-hitting Lumb having impressed recently in the IPL. Coupled with KP, Eoin Morgan and Paul Collingwood, I feel that batting wise we look as strong on paper as any other team (if that’s ever a useful measure to use), though our lack of regular 20/20 International experience in the bowling department could be our Achilles Heel in going all the way. I do like what Graeme Swann brings to the party with the ball, and let’s hope he can put his recent run-in with the law to one side and show the rest of our bowlers the way to do it to bring some much needed one-day success. England also have Sussex's Michael Yardy in the squad so if the situation were to arise England have a reliable option should they wish to play a second spinner.

The big questions for the tournament, that everyone is seemingly asking are: Will there be six sixes in an over, will any team manage to post more than 300 in one innings, will Jacques Kallis’ strike rate be more than 50, will any of the West Indian players end up arguing amongst themselves on the pitch and will the Ozzies be the first team to be knocked out of the competition?!?! Only time will tell in what promises to be a couple, and a bit, weeks worth of fast and furious entertaining cricket.

Jumping back to the domestic scene, the weather has managed to hold it’s own for now, with hardly any matches being affected by the weather so far (Let’s hope I’ve not just made the mother of all curses there!). After all both the Rose Counties have been affected by the weather in recent years costing them a decent crack at the Championship.

Speaking of the Championship and the Rose counties, Yorkshire are occupying top spot in the LV Division 1 table with 2 wins and a draw from their 3 games. They're also going pretty well againgst title holders Durham racking up a mammoth 610-6 againgst a good bowling attack. With stars like Jaques Rudolph, Ajmal Shazhad, Tim Bresnan, Andrew Gale and Adil Rashid, Yorkshire fans have to be omptimistic of a first championship since 2001 when they beat Surrey for the title.

So far Durham have not lived up to not just my expectations (as i tipped them to do well) but everyone's expectations. They've been have been pretty hit and miss in their matches, and were somewhat lucky to avoid defeat againgst promoted Essex in their second game. Still though you cannot rule the double-champions out as there are still loads of matches to go though, so it’s worth remembering that things could all change rather sharply!

Both Notts and Lancs have also started the season well, both winning two from two so far, whilst at the other end of the table Somerset, Warwickshire and Hampshire have all lost their first two matches.

In Division two, Sussex have started the season very strongly, and it looks like that come Thursday evening they will have won all four of their opening matches, unless Leicestershire, who have equally started the season strongly can form the come back of all come backs in the second innings. My team (Derbyshire) have not let me down so far, other than a defeat to local neighbours Leicestershire, though they’ve won their other two matches so far and have started strongly away at Northants in the latest round of matches too. In the defeat to Leicester, then it was Derby born Wayne White who spoiled the day for the home side, coming back to haunt his former team with his maiden first class ton. He’s also been equally impressive with the ball so far this season.

The South-East counties of both Surrey and Middlesex have both started pretty badly, with no wins in their games so far with Middlesex having lost both their opening games and Surrey drawing one and losing two. Gloucestershire have faired no better so far either, losing both of their opening games though have the edge slightly over Middlesex in the game that’s currently being played between both counties. Surrey’s last match did see lots of runs at the picturesque Whitgift School, and almost pulled off a win. The game did see skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown (who I commented on last time around), smash a century, and there were also runs from wicket-keeper batsman Steven Davies and the best dancing English qualified batsman the country still has to offer (that’s Mark Ramprakash).

The best individual performance of the season so far has to be from Middlesex’s freakishly tall quickie Steven Finn (pictured left). First game of the season away at Worcestershire (New Road), he bettered his impressive 5-69 in the first innings with an amazing 9-37 in the second.

Despite his overall match figures of 14-106 in the match, Middlesex lost the game by 111 runs, but what a start to the season for the big man, and has one again showed the England selectors what he’s capable of. In my mind, he could easily fill the gap/s that’s been left by both Steve Harmison and Freddie Flintoff in recent years and become England’s premier strike bowler.

I’ll be back in a couple of week’s time with more of my cricket thoughts, probably when the Twenty20 World Cup is nearing the final stages and will also give you my thoughts on how the newly created Clydesdale Bank 40 over comp has gone so far by then too, so bye for now!

Sol y FUTBOL: Rojillos Needing Miracle To Survive

Ian Lane reports as Lanzarote fall to another defeat and almost certain relegation. There is still hope but the reality looks like the third tier of Spanish football. If that is the case lets build for next year, SportTrades will still follow you. For those in Lanzarote next weekend, head to Arrecife and cheer on UD Lanzarote.

VILLANOVENSE 4 LANZAROTE 1

26th April 2010

The noose has tightened for U.D. Lanzarote after failing once again to pick up anything against direct relegation rivals.

The nine consecutive years playing football in Spain’s third league is about to come to an end. Only a miracle will save the Rojillos now. Bottom of the league with two games remaining and their only possibility to salvage anything is to finish in the relegation play off spot. Realistically it is doubtful. Should any of the other four teams above Lanzarote win either of their two matches or draw two, then Lanzarote will be relegated to the Third division.

The Badajoz side went ahead in the 15th minute from a header by defender Manu Cabezas and two minutes later doubled their lead from the penalty spot by ex Rojillo Juanjo.

The Lanzarote manager Carmelo Hernández instantly made a change by bringing on striker Carlitos replacing centre back Faruk. This looked to be a good move as the Rojillos pulled the score back to 2-1 with a long distance free kick from Rúben Rodriguez in the 24th minute.

Five minutes later and the Rojillos had a fantastic opportunity to draw level when Rúben was put through with just the keeper to beat. Unfortunately Lanzarote´s top scorer fired wide as did the Rojillos hopes of remaining in this division.

Three minutes from half time and a great solo goal from Juanjo restored the home side’s two goal cushion as the Rojillos went into the break trailing 3-1.

Five minutes into the second period and it was game, set and match to Villanovense when Juanjo completed his hat trick and gave his side an unassailable 4-1 lead.

To round off an awful day for the Rojillos, defender Andrés Gasparini received a straight red card late on as Lanzarote finished the match with 10 men.

If next week is going to be Lanzarote´s last home game in this division it is against one of Spain’s top sides Real Oviedo. Stan Collymore´s old team is already assured a play off spot when they secured the highest winning victory this season in Spain’s league by battering Vecindario 9-1.

Villanovense have given themselves hope with this victory moving up one place to third from bottom but also on equal points (38) with four other sides including Tenerife B who currently occupy the relegation play off position.

Shout but no-one was Listening

Some may of noticed, many probably not, but there was no April edition of Shout. We had created - with our friends at Girls in Football - a 5 point mini manifesto in line with the election. Our points covered grassroot sports, the funding, availability, development and the benefit to society that sport has. Our strap line was simply 'Unity through Sport'. We found that all three main parties stood shoulder to shoulder on the issues raised, their silence was deafening. Shout will be back on the 7th May with a bumper edition.

Get Your Kit On! - Chelsea

I know, I need to get out more. Welcome to Get Your Kit On, our new feature about next seasons new team shirt. From leaked pictures to confirm kit launches, our fashion expert Windy Ivor (Leave it - honestly don't go there) will keep us abreast, where possible, with the news. Thankfully our friends at www.football-shirts.co.uk SoccerLens and FSC (www.footballshirtculture.com) will be on hand to help.
Before that 'True Blue' Dave Scott has a go and says what about Chelsea, here it is with launch date as well.
Wigan Athletic will be looking for a new kit supplier after ending their partnership with Vanderal. Vanderal parent company are experiencing difficulties, however the kit supplier themselves claim that it is business as usual. Clubs who have deals with Vandarel are unsure of their situations, these clubs include NPower Championship side Doncaster Rovers and NPower League side Dagenham & Redbridge. By the way NPower take over the title sponsorship of the Football League for next season.
Their are a number of sides involved in promotion play-offs this evening, covering many leagues. SportTrades wish you all the best of luck.

Manchester United 2010/2011

Our friends at Football Shirts (www.football-shirts.co.uk) have just confirmed the new Manchester United Kit for 2010/2011. I know, they had a new kit last year, but to be fair have a new sponsor due to unforeseen circumstances, so changed both home and away kit. Sorry for the quality of the photo.

Sol y Futbol: A Glimmer of Hope For Rojillos

Ian Lane puts down his Walnut Whips and reports from Arrecife as Lanzaroe see a glimmer of hope through the Volcanic Ash. If anyone is reading this and stranded in Lanzarote, Ian's number is 079.........

LANZAROTE 2 GIMNÁSTICA 1

19th April 2010

U.D. Lanzarote fight back from a goal down and win the game with two goals in the final ten minutes which will give the Rojillos hope for the remaining three matches.

The game began with a good tempo but it wasn’t till the 13th minute for the first threat at goal. Jonathon Torres cleverly set up strike par partner Carlitos for a clear shot at goal from five yards, he shot with venom but a defender lunged in at the last moment and deflected his effort away for a corner.

Four minutes later and Raúl Torres powered in a 30 yard strike but the Gimnástica keeper saved the shot low down at the left hand post.

The first chance of the match for the side from the top north of Spain was to prove costly for the Rojillos. A free kick from 20 yards had been awarded. A training ground set play fooled the Rojillos. Two players ran to take the free kick resulting in pretend confusion; a moment later midfielder Cushi beautifully curled the ball around the wall with his left foot into the bottom left hand corner beating the outstretched Vilches to give his side a 0-1 advantage.

Familiar territory for the Rojillos as most the games they have won this season have had to be done after falling behind. For the remainder of the half the Rojillos regrouped and did not allow Gimnástica Torrelavega any access to goal.

With the ship steadied the Conejeros (locals) came out for the second half as if their lives depended on victory. Within 20 seconds of the restart Maikel Padrón saw his 20 yard effort fly inches past the post.

In the 49th minute Lanzarote keeper Vilches saved well with his feet following a corner and five minutes later Gimnástica had anther chance to extend their lead when midfielder Siro broke through and found himself with just Vilches to beat. The Lanzarote number stood tall till the last second and saved brilliantly with his feet.

The Rojillos then took control. In the 57th minute Vladi broke through the centre and released Rúben Rodriguez who in turn instantly found Jonathon Torres. His first time strike was saved well by keeper Iván Crespo then the rebound fell to Vladi but the Lanzarote Captain fired narrowly over.

Two minutes later and Sub Ayoze Pérez blasted a shot in from the right hand corner of the penalty area but his violent strike was met with the strong right hand of keeper Crespo and away to safety.

Just after the hour mark and manager Carmelo Hernández introduced the temperamental but sometimes brilliant Toñito. The Lanzarote gaffer has kept faith with his often criticized winger despite three red cards and countless yellow cards he has picked up this season. What a good decision it turned out to be as the 24 year old turned out to be in inspiring form.

Five minutes later and good work from Toñito led to Vladi combining with a quick thinking Torres for a one two. The Lanzarote Captain struck the ball hard and low from eight yards but his shot was superbly saved and pushed onto the post. The rebound fell to Vladi but again the keeper bravely saved at his near post. With the keeper in such outstanding form and Lanzarote´s luck resembling that of an airline company there seemed to be no way through for the Rojillos.

In the 72nd minute the ever alert Torres struck a shot come cross that went inches past the far right hand post and the boot of Ayoze Pérez. Eight minutes on and Crespo saved low at his right from a Carlitos shot.

The pressure Lanzarote mounted finally paid dividends in the 82nd minute. Left back Juachi fired in belter from 25 yards which swerved and deceived the keeper who could only get a hand to it as it rocketed into the roof of the net.

The Rojillos were now firmly in control and only two minutes from the first goal came the second. A ball passed to Torres in the centre of the pitch was perfectly flicked onto to Toñito galloping down the left. The winger raced on and committed the keeper then unselfishly fed the ball across goal to fellow Sub Ayoze Pérez for a tap in from six yards and amazingly the Rojillos were in front 2-1.

Vladi came close in stoppage time for a third which was again set up by man of the match Torres but the keeper pulled off another great one handed save but it wasn’t to matter as the ref blew for full time.

Is this a stay of execution? Most of the other sides in relegation danger picked up points leaving the Rojillos still bottom and six points and goal difference from safety. The realistic objective is the play off spot with a third division side which is an achievable three point climb with three games remaining.

Next week Lanzarote will be travelling to the Extremadura region of Spain pending the volcano crisis where they will face a critical match against second from bottom Villanovense.

Sol y Futbol: Capital Punishment

Ian Lane reports from Madrid as Lanzarote continue their poor run of results.

REAL MADRID B 4 LANZAROTE 1

15th April 2010

The Rojillos were in control of this match up until the 65th minute. The game was poised at 1-1 and Lanzarote missed a golden chance to take the lead and from the next move the all whites of Real Madrid counter attacked and scored.

This result leaves Lanzarote with one foot in Spain’s third division. The Rojillos are six points from safety with only 12 points left to play for.

The game began at a fiery pace with Lanzarote producing the first chance of the match. A cross from Raúl Torres found namesake Jonathon Torres and the Rojillos striker powered in a good header but the Real Madrid keeper Adán saved well.

In the 7th minute an exquisite pass through the centre from midfielder Cordero split the Rojillos defence and found striker Juan Carlos. As the Lanzarote defence sprinted back the Real Madrid forward neatly rounded keeper Miguel and sent his side 1-0 up.

Credit to the Rojillos as heads did not drop; on the contrary the Rojillos forced the Madrid side to retreat. In the 12th minute Raúl Torres side stepped his defender on the left wing and from a good 30 yards unleashed a rocket of a shot which was still rising as it flew past the Real keeper to level the score at 1-1. Many of the Lanzarote fans were at the clubhouse in Arrecife watching the match live on Real Madrid TV and were stunned as well as relieved watching the replays of such a terrific strike.

The game remained fairly equal up until half time with the best chance falling to Jonathon Torres. The striker beat the offside trap with a run down the right wing, he cut the ball back but the defender managed to block the pass but in turn laid it back to Torres who shot accurate and powerfully but the Madrid keeper stood his ground and saved well.

The second half the Rojillos came out all fired up and bombarded the Madrid goalmouth with successive corners. The home side were kept on the back foot and offered very little when in possession.

The 65th minute proved to be the deciding moment. A free kick on the right wing for Lanzarote swung in by the trusted left boot of Rubén Rodriguez found defender Moncho unmarked at the back post. The centre back some how completely messed up his header and Real Madrid’s B team broke with pace.

Seconds later and Madrid were deep down the Rojillos left wing. Marcos Alonso chipped the ball back to the penalty spot perfectly to striker Sarbia and with the Lanzarote defence still making their way back the Real Madrid striker calmly volleyed home into the bottom right hand corner giving his side a 2-1 advantage.

This time the Rojillos heads dropped knowing that they must win the match to have any realistic chance of avoiding the drop.

The Lanzarote players looked tired both physically and mentally whereas Real Madrid’s youngsters looked strong and eager to impress Spain’s national coach Vicente Del Bosque watching in the stands.

Manager Carmelo Hernández brought on fresh legs with front men Carlitos and Barnsley boy Ian Robinson but the damage had already been done. In the 80th minute sub Vasquez broke down the right wing and was brought down by centre back Richard. The Ref awarded a penalty and dished out a second yellow card to the defender. Vasquez sent keeper Miguel the wrong way and gave his side a commanding 3-1 lead by blasting the spot kick into the bottom right hand corner.

There was to be no way back for the 10 men of Lanzarote as the clocked slowly ticked away prolonging the pain. Deep into stoppage time and Real Madrid’s second Sub Samuel found himself with a one on one with keeper Miguel and without a defender in sight. The youngster beautifully chipped the Lanzarote keeper who was standing in for the suspended Vilches and completed the 25 minute rout making the score 4-1.

As the old saying goes where there is life there is hope. This Sunday Lanzarote will face mid table Gimnástica. Should Lanzarote pick up 3 wins and a draw from their four remaining matches they would still have a chance.

Personally I believe the bookmakers would give better odds on people travelling to England rather than Lanzarote to pick up a sun tan.

Liverpool Back on the Market

This posting was taking in full from our friends at FootyMad.Net

Liverpool co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have confirmed that the Anfield club is officially up for sale.

The American duo have confirmed their intention to end their turbulent three-year reign on the same day that the club appointed a new chairman.

Hicks and Gillett's bought the Reds in February 2007 but several parties have been linked with takeovers in recent months.

Martin Broughton, the chairman of Barclays Capital and British Airways, has now been installed as the club's new chairman and his first major task will be to find new owners.

"Owning Liverpool Football Club over these past three years has been a rewarding and exciting experience for us and our families," said Hicks and Gillett in a joint statement.

"Having grown the club this far we have now decided together to look to sell the club to owners committed to take the club through its next level of growth and development.

"We are delighted that Martin Broughton has agreed to take the position of chairman, working alongside the club's excellent senior management team.

"Martin is a distinguished business leader of excellent judgment and with a great reputation. He is a genuine football supporter and will seek to oversee the sales process in the best interests of the club and its supporters."

Broughton himself added: "I will run this sale process in the right way, for the benefit of the club and its fans.

"Liverpool is one of the world's greatest clubs and my aim is to try and ensure that we find new owners who are able to build on the club's recent improved financial performance in order to help deliver sporting success."

European fans congress in Barcelona this summer

This post was taking in full from Football Supporters Europe Website. Please contact them directly from details within this feature for more information.

Football Supporters Europe (FSE), the independent and democratic voice for football fans across the continent, have announced the date and location of their 3rd annual congress. This year the fun and games take place in sunny Barcelona over the weekend of July 16th-18th.

Following last year’s successful event in Hamburg, which was attended by more than 350 supporters from 29 different countries across Europe, this year’s event will be key in shaping the direction of the supporter movement in the UK and beyond, as fans come together to mix ideas and cultures in a range of workshops, discussions and social events.

Since Hamburg 2009, the FSE Committee and various FSE members have travelled, debated, emailed, twittered and facebooked up and down the continent, and sometimes even beyond, to spread the word on the issues discussed. Working groups have been set up to help tackle the issues that face fans across a range of issues, in any number of countries. FSE have been busy establishing contacts with many more grassroots football fans, as well as lobbying the powers that be in the various football governing bodies and institutions to make the fans’ voice heard.

Topics for discussion at this year’s congress include:

* Behind Closed Doors Only!? Current Sanctions affecting Fans vs Self-Policing
* The F$&%ed Up Economics of Football
* Action Heroes Against Modern Football?! Ultras
* …not here for YOUR Entertainment! Female Football Fans
* Bridging a gap – Fan Liaison Officers as a model in Europe

FSE are thankful to the legion of Spanish football fans who’ve volunteered to support FSE and help them run the event. While the congress is supported by Uefa and FC Espanyol it is important to note that, as with everything it does, FSE remains completely independent.

FSE are able to provide some financial support for delegates of all fans’ groups without sufficient financial means towards travel costs and accommodation for their trip to Barcelona. Please contact them to let them know if you require any such assistance. The FSE congress is, of course, also fully disabled-accessible, and they would like to see as many fans with disabilities there as possible.

For further information about the weekend, and to register, head along to FSE’s website – www.footballsupporterseurope.org. The deadline for registrations is Friday June 18th.

We'll be there, and we look forard to seeing you in Spain

Sol y Futbol: Games Running Out for Rojillos

Ian Lane reports from Arrecife as UD Lanzarote drop to the bottom of the league. 5 points from safety, 5 games left. Come on Lads, anyone travelling to Lanzarote in the next month go along and support the team.

LANZAROTE 1 LEGANÉS 2

12th April 2010

A strike in either half by ex Rojillo favourite Anibal Zurdo sends the Conejeros (locals) to the foot of the table, five points from safety with only five matches remaining.

U.D. Lanzarote began the match looking positive and up and ready for a battle. The game plan for Rojillos manager Carmelo Hernández went up in smoke in just under six minutes.

On their first attack the Madrid side punished the Rojillos without mercy. Great wing play from man of the match Chupe who set up team mate Valleros. The midfielders strike was blocked and a host of players challenged for the rebound but quickest to react was Anibal and sent his side 0-1 in front from close range.

The Rojillos were stunned but continued to play open attacking football though failed in the final third. Equally Leganés went in search of a second goal and had a penalty appeal turned down in the closing minutes of the half with the Ref opting for a free kick on the edge of the box.

Lanzarote came out for the second half with the same enthusiasm as they had shown in the opening minutes of the first. Almost instantly this positive frame of mind paid dividends.

A superb free kick by defender Juachi sailed into the top right hand corner from 25 yards leveling the score at one apiece. The home side was egged on by a vociferous crowd and felt as though a winner was inevitable.

In the 51st minute Raúl Torres and five minutes later Jonathon Torres had good efforts saved by the Leganés keeper.

Both sides were desperate for three points for two entirely different reasons, Leganés for promotion and cup qualification and Lanzarote for survival in Spain’s bronze league.

As the game entered the final third both sides bypassed the midfield as the long ball became the preferred option. This may sound ugly football but the intensity of the match and the openness of the game was enjoyed by all the fans.

Jonathon Torres was again denied twice in the space of three minutes by the Madrid keeper Raúl Moreno as the Rojillos dug deep, desperate for a goal.

In the 81st minute disaster struck. The Lanzarote back four was comfortably in possession of the ball and with no apparent danger a mix up in defence gifted Anibal the ball with just the Rojillos keeper Vilches to beat. The Lanzarote faithful knew the quality that this striker possesses after his two seasons sporting a Rojillos shirt. The Madrid born player made no mistake with his left foot and with his 14th strike of the season put his side back in the lead at 1-2.

In a vital week for the Rojillos, they face Real Madrid Castilla (the reserve team of the moxt famous club in the world) away from home on Wednesday night, before facing Gimnástica de Torrelavega near Santander at the weekend. Some points are definitely needed for the team to avoid finishing bottom yet alone dropping into the fourth tiet or spanish football.

Sol y Futbol: A Postcard from Arrecife

As regular visitors to SportTrades Report should know by now, we follow UD Lanzarote who play in the third tier of Spanish Football. Recently SportTrades director Rob McAvoy travelled to Arrecife where he met up with Ian Lane whose reports we feature on this site. Here Rob writes about his experience seeing the Rojillos on a match day, where they played host to Puertolllano at the Ciudad Deportiva stadium.

Rob: I find that no matter what level of football I am about to go and watch, the anticipation and excitement is the same. I had thought it was the train spotter side of me, but to meet so many like minded people was a type of therapy. Going to matches at UD Lanzarote (The Rojillos) this season is a little bit like watching Newcastle United last, you know the ability is there but the games are running out and lady luck is hiding. Unlike, however, the last game at Villa last season the passion is evident to escape the grasp of relegation.

In the centre of Lanzarote is one of many monuments created by the hugely influential and iconic artist Cesar Manrique. It is entitled Monumento al Campesino (The Field Worker), these sporting versions of ‘field workers’ are busting a gut to keep the pride of Lanzarote in the third tier of Spanish football.

Playa Blanca was a little hazy when I left, but the Sun was beginning to win the fight. I had a long drive ahead to Arrecife to watch my first European match, on behalf of SportTrades Report. OK, it was only about 25 miles, but I thought I needed to make you feel, poor bloke putting himself out like that for us – didn’t work did it. I was all too aware of the difficulties UD Lanzarote were going through this season, from reports and chatting to Ian Lane on a regular basis. I felt confident that they would win today.

The thoughts of the match temporarily were put to one side, as I left Playa Blanca and travelled on the edges of the lava field that had scarred the landscape, but left it with a breathtaking beauty. Then in seconds I was passing by Yaiza and Uga with their share of trees nicely setting a stunning contrast. We passed through the valley and soon the Grand Hotel in Arrecife was in view, the tallest building in Lanzarote, at a whopping 17 stories. This was my marker to find the ground; if I got to the Hotels front door I had missed the turning. I had spoken to Ian a few days earlier for directions, had written them down in some form of hieroglyphics, thinking I would understand, but of course. My memory of the conversation and the fact that the previous day I had got lost and stumbled upon the stadium, made the ground easy to find.

I first met Ian Lane a few years ago. I was walking through Teguise Market and found the stall he and Anna have there. He persuaded me that I must have this ‘T’ Shirt and later sold me Double Glazing and a subscription to Readers Digest (I have obviously made the last two up). He is fluent in many languages to the buying patterns of individual nationalities, even if they aren’t aware of it yet. The previous week I had visited him at the market just to catch up and finalise details for the game the following weekend. I helped scare off a potential client, for being the gauge for the XXL size of apparel or DPL as it is now known (Dart Player Large). He works like a Trojan for the club selling merchandise at markets and match days, providing the club with ideas and promoting coming matches in resorts. The fantastic mascot has been bought by the Lane family, even with opposition from the powers that be at the club. The Mascot is a massive hit with the kids, with balancing acts on hurdles that surround the pitch and forward roles that knock security staff off their feet. Committee permitting, Ian has some great schemes in mind for next season. The aim, to improve the match day experience and to bolster the crowd with holiday makers from Europe.

The next stage of my day was to locate my host. He had kindly arranged a press pass for me; I had to ask for this Lady, who I am still looking for. Finding him was not as problematic as first thought. My initial attempts to find Mr Lane failed due my lack of Spanish other than a few greetings and ‘how do I get to the Civil Guard?’ The embarrassing apologies from the locals for their lack of English shamed me. I have a New Year resolution, 4 months late but – well – better than never, to learn Spanish. Thankfully a Gentleman who turned out to be the Radio Commentator pointed me in the right direction. Once located, I was informed that Barnsley Robbo was not even in the squad. Later, Robbo was seen being consoled, but he was obviously not happy at being left out of the proceedings. At UD Lanzarote the time for the crowd to enter the stadium is two minutes before kick off, so up until then holiday makers and ex-pats mill around chatting and enjoying the hospitality and sunshine. Also enjoying the hospitality was Brian Bannister a retired policeman and a follower of Gretna. He had followed Gretna in there recent adventure in Scottish Football culminating in the SPL. Brian arrived resplendent in his, now defunct, team shirt a sure future collector’s item and Walnut Whips.

We had a lady from Dublin who followed Fulham and escaped most the winter in Lanzarote and a Guy from Cardiff who followed the Bluebirds. The sun shone, the atmosphere built and kick-off fast approached. My first experience of European Domestic football was living up to all my hopes. Real football, real people, a million miles away from the stars of La Liga and the Premier League.

The Rojillos had the advantage of play, but you couldn’t help but have the feeling that Puertolllano would hurt Lanzarote on the counter attack. Lanzarote kept knocking at the door but no breakthrough. A moment of uncertainty saw the Lanzarote ‘Keeper left exposed only option to bring down the Puertollano attacker for a penalty which was converted to send Lanzarote in at half time 1 down. This was the first decision of an inept display from the referee. If indeed it was a penalty, the Goalie should have seen a Red Card, but amazingly a yellow was only issued. The second mistake was just unbelievable. The second half saw lanzarote increase the pressure but with no reward. Then with almost the last move of the game, a Lanzarote forward was hacked down in the area, thankfully all limbs remained attached (yes it was that blatant), but all appeals were ignored.

Lanzarote lost the game, but the excitement didn’t end there. Both sets of players discussed the game in an over zealous way heading towards the changing room. The Guards, who up until that point had been enjoying a coffee, separated them. They allowed the visitors to proceed to the dressing room, leaving UD Lanzarote to calm down in the warmth of the day. Then supporters, who seem to question the commitment of the team, reignited the player’s mood of injustice and handbags. The Guards remained with their cappuccino and the players returned to their dressing rooms.

My day in Arrecife with UD Lanzarote was over; I can’t wait until the next time. Apart from the result it was very enjoyable. I recommend that you check the website for fixtures if you are in Lanzarote over the next few weeks or when you visit Teguise market head towards the UD Lanzarote stall in the main square, support the Rojillos by buying merchandise. If you go armed with a Walnut Whip you may even get a discount. I would like to thank Ian for organising a wonderful day out.

Jimmy Drew's New Cricket Feature: Outside The Long Room

James Drew will be sharing his thoughts for the 2010 cricket season on all things Cricket. His feature ‘Outside the Long Room’ will appear throughout the season. We will highlight the various talking points the coming season will bring and the general opinions James has regarding cricket. We will also follow the mighty Breadsall Cricket Club on their progress throughout the season in the Derbyshire County Cricket League. This is great news as we've been looking for a cricket side to follow over the last couple of weeks.

Founded circa 1880, Breadsall run three senior sides, all of whom play in the Derbyshire County League. For the 2010 season, the 1st team will be in division 4 North, the 2nd's in 5 North and the 3rd's in 10 North. We also have the odd friendly game on any spare Sundays, as well as running five junior sides in total, covering age groups from kwik-cricket and under 11 hard-ball right through to under 17's. We're a friendly club with high aspirations for the future...

Welcome to ‘Outside the Long Room’, I’m sure cricket fans at all levels will enjoy it.

SportTrades F.A.Cup Tracker. Semi Final Day

As you know SportTrades picked Barkingside FC in the extra prelimary Round of the competition back in August. The Tracker works like this. We would follow the winner of the tie into and throughout the subsequent rounds. Each appearance in the rounds would equal 1 point, this would not include replays. If appearances are equal after the final game, then positions will be determined by Away Wins, Replays, Goal Difference. The actual winners of the competition will receive 1 bonus point and Semi Final and Final are registered as Away Wins.

We followed Fulham into the Quarter Finals where they were beaten 3-1 by Spurs in the replay. Yesterday at Wembley, Spurs were beaten by Portsmouth 2-0 in extra time. The SportTrades Tracker will now be backing Portsmouth in the final v Chelsea in May. The Tracker has followed the drama and emotions that the worlds oldest competition experiences and Portsmouth, in the final, continues the romance of the cup.

The tracker has actually been won by Accrington Stanley with 4 appearances.

Outside the Long Room: County Cricket 2010 Preview

SportTrades very own Jimmy Drew gives his thoughts at the start of the Cricket Season. It starts TODAY!. Jimmy will be back throughout the season and we will also feature the progress of his very own club side. So over to you James...

It almost feels like Cricketing weather

I’m in shock…..today is the start of the domestic cricket season and we’re blessed with sun and blue skies a plenty, how very novel indeed…..having said that, what odds do you think you’d get right now for 2010 being the wettest summer “since records began”?!? (That statement always makes me wonder what they did before records did begin?), anyway, I digress….

So, what will the 2010 season bring us you all ask? The intention of this blog is to answer just that, provide you with my not-so-expert predictions on which clubs will achieve what as well as giving you, at times, a different view to the number one quintessential game this country has to offer….

Let’s start off with the factual stuff….The biggest change this year is that the number of competitions has reduced from four to three. The LV= County Championship (4 day matches), remains largely the same as last season, with two leagues of nine counties, each playing the other eight teams in their respective leagues twice, once at home and once away. The bonus points scoring criteria has changed, which is not only designed to encourage teams to score runs and take wickets in the first innings at a swifter pace, though changes to the match points should also encourage teams to push for wins rather than settle for the previous all to often “bore-draw” outcome. Promotion and relegation is decided upon the bottom two teams of division one and top two in division two.

The other two competitions include The Friends Provident Twenty20 and revamped Clydesdale Bank 40 over competition. For the former, instead of three regional divisions with six teams in each, this year, and similar to the county championship, there will be two divisions with nine teams in each, though split geographically (North and South). The top four teams in each league will qualify for the quarter-finals, and then it’s a knock-out competition from there.

The revamped 40 over competition also brings an end to the 50 over version of the game and includes all of the 18 professional counties, as well as Scotland, the Netherlands and the ECB Unicorns (a team made up of players without full county contracts, eager to make a name for themselves no doubt). The format for this competition is three groups of seven teams, with the top team and best overall runner-up from the three groups progressing through to the semi-final stage.

Although there’s one less competition this season, counties will find themselves actually playing more days of cricket (weather permitting), than last season. This is something which continues to be debated on a annual basis, with the burning out of players, fatigue, lack of preparation between matches as well as “nothing to play for” games all fuelling the debate on how the county set-up should be structured.

Tweaks however continue to be made almost each year to the county structure, and hopefully one day we will finally arrive at a happy medium of more competitive and meaningful cricket though slightly less matches.

Young English players wishing to stake a claim in becoming the next big thing on the international stage, for far too long, have largely had to first earn their stripes on the treadmill that is the county circuit, and based on its current set-up, monotony of some matches and the overall tight scheduling throughout the summer calendar makes it extremely tricky indeed for the better players to cut the grain and stand out from the rest. Having said that, the pathway to the England senior squad has never been so good, with much more emphasis placed on the younger national sides, for example the under 19’s, teams below this age group as well as the England Lions (England “A” Team), resulting in the better players being managed and nurtured along the way as they should.

So, what can we expect for the summer ahead, personally, I think Durham will take some beating and retain the title as Division 1 champs in the County Championship, though the likes of Notts and Somerset will once again push them all the way, along with new boys Kent who won the division 2 title last season and will be difficult to beat at this level.

Depending on who’s selected for the summer internationals, I feel that both Yorkshire and Warwickshire may find themselves at the wrong end of division one for much of the season and will be involved in the dog fight to stay out of the two relegation places right down to the wire.

Surrey, Middlesex and Worcestershire, all of whom are in division 2 this year have been pretty busy over the winter in the transfer market, with many players coming and going from all three counties. With regards Surrey, only time will tell whether Chris Adams’ bold move to acquire the services of 22 year old Rory Hamilton-Brown from Sussex and duly appoint him as county captain is the right decision. I do personally feel that all three counties will be pushing for promotion to division 1, and although all three appear pretty strong on paper in the batting department, it’ll be their bowling that will ultimately dictate their success come the end of the season.

I think the surprise package will be Derbyshire, with Chris Rogers carrying on from where he left off last season in skippering the team and leading from the front with his batting at the top of the innings. They have also made a few shrewd signings, such as Robin Peterson and Mark Footitt, both of whom I tip for big things this season and I feel Derbyshire will be pushing all the way this season for promotion to division one.

Aside from the County Championship, when the razzmatazz of Twenty20 kicks off at the start of June, not only will counties see their usual attendances increase from a few hundred to several thousand per game, but we’ll also be blessed with the arrival of some of the best one day players in the world, albeit, for a few weeks whilst this competition runs it course. Players such as Shahid Afridi (Hampshire), Adam Gilchrist (Middlesex), Andrew Symonds (Surrey), Herschelle Gibbs (Yorkshire), Loots Bosman (Derbys) and Albie Morkel (Durham) will don our shores in what promises to be a fast paced and white knuckled adventure for all who watch. My prediction is that Somerset, Notts and Durham will all make the semis, plus one other team of course, which I just can’t decide on just can’t decide on!

Finally, with regards the Clydesdale 40 competition, my virtual money is on either Kent or Essex to go all the way, and although I’d love to see them do well, I feel that the ECB Unicorns will end up bottom of their respective group. That’s enough from me for the time being, so here’s to an exciting summer of cricket, and let’s hope that we’re blessed with one of the warmest we’ve had for a few years.

The Early Years

Rick was born in 1962 to Dick and Judy Hoyt. As a result of oxygen deprivation to Rick's brain at the time of his birth, Rick was diagnosed as a spastic quadriplegic with cerebral palsy. Dick and Judy were advised to institutionalize Rick because there was no chance of him recovering, and little hope for Rick to live a "normal" life. This was just the beginning of Dick and Judy's quest for Rick's inclusion in community, sports, education and one day, the workplace.

Dick and Judy soon realized that though Rick couldn't walk or speak; he was quite astute and his eyes would follow them around the room. They fought to integrate Rick into the public school system, pushing administrators to see beyond Rick's physical limitations. Dick and Judy would take Rick sledding and swimming, and even taught him the alphabet and basic words, like any other child. After providing concrete evidence of Rick's intellect and ability to learn like everyone else, Dick and Judy needed to find a way to help Rick communicate for himself.

With $5,000 in 1972 and a skilled group of engineers at Tufts University, an interactive computer was built for Rick. This computer consisted of a cursor being used to highlight every letter of the alphabet. Once the letter Rick wanted was highlighted, he was able to select it by just a simple tap with his head against a head piece attached to his wheelchair. When the computer was originally first brought home, Rick surprised everyone with his first words. Instead of saying, "Hi, Mom," or "Hi, Dad," Rick's first "spoken" words were: "Go, Bruins!" The Boston Bruins were in the Stanley Cup finals that season. It was clear from that moment on, that Rick loved sports and followed the game just like anyone else.

In 1975, at the age of 13, Rick was finally admitted into public school. After high school, Rick attended Boston University, and he graduated with a degree in Special Education in 1993. Dick retired in 1995 as a Lt. Colonel from the Air National Guard, after serving his country for 37 years.

The Beginning of Team Hoyt

In the spring of 1977, Rick told his father that he wanted to participate in a 5-mile benefit run for a Lacrosse player who had been paralyzed in an accident. Far from being a long-distance runner, Dick agreed to push Rick in his wheelchair and they finished all 5 miles, coming in next to last. That night, Rick told his father, "Dad, when I'm running, it feels like I'm not handicapped."

This realization was just the beginning of what would become over 1,000 races completed, including marathons, decathlons and triathlons (6 of them being Ironman competitions). Also adding to their list of achievements, Dick and Rick biked and ran across the U.S. in 1992, completing a full 3,735 miles in 45 days.
In a triathlon, Dick will pull Rick in a boat with a bungee cord attached to a vest around his waist and to the front of the boat for the swimming stage. For the biking stage, Rick will ride a special two-seater bicycle, and then Dick will push Rick in his custom made running chair (for the running stage).

Rick was once asked, if he could give his father one thing, what would it be? Rick responded, "The thing I'd most like is for my dad to sit in the chair and I would push him for once."

The 2009 Boston Marathon was officially Team Hoyt's 1000th race. Rick always says if it comes down to doing one race a year he would like it to be the Boston Marathon: his favourite race. Dick Hoyt hopes that he is able to push Rick in the Boston Marathon when he is 70 years old (2011)! Neither Dick or Rick are ready to retire yet.

Kick It Out reveal cash for grass roots scheme

Kick It Out and the Football Foundation have revealed plans to give away up to £2,000 to grass roots football in a bid to increase participation in the game.
In particularly, the scheme will aim to get minority communities involved in all areas of the game, including playing, coaching and refereeing, using football to create more inclusive communities and helping grassroots and amateur teams develop closer links with mainstream football including local county Football Associations.
Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “Accessing this funding is easy, straightforward and will allow groups from under represented communities a chance to celebrate their love and passion for the game in their own way.”
Piara Powar, Director for Kick It Out said: “This money will make a difference to minority communities across the country, empowering those groups that may ordinarily get missed out and developing sustainable projects that can have a longer term life.”
The Football Foundation is the country’s largest sports charity, funded by the Premier League, The FA and Government.
Any group wishing to apply for a grant can do so by visiting www.kickitout.org
The deadline for applications is Monday 25th April 5pm.

Sol y Futbol: Rojillos lose Deep into Injury Time

Ian Lane reports on a last minute winner, that condems Lanzarote to their third defeat in a row. Come on lets get to it, avoid relegation.

ALCALÁ 3 LANZAROTE 2

5th April 2010

A 94th minute winner for fellow relegation strugglers Alcalá condemns Lanzarote to their third consecutive defeat leaving the Rojillos second from bottom and four points from safety.

The Rojillos began the match badly, conceding in the opening minutes and ended the match even worse.

Less than three minutes had ticked by when Lanzarote conceded and began the afternoon with an even more difficult uphill battle. Ayoze Pérez lost the ball in the centre and being the last defender let in striker Roberto Izquierdo. The Alcalá front man did not turn down this generous gift from the Lanzarote defender and chipped the Lanzarote keeper Vilches giving his side confidence and a 1-0 lead.

The home side was looking to kill off the game early with a second goal but credit must be given to the Lanzarote defence who weathered the initial 20 minutes of bombardment and gradually eased into the match.

Juachi who was playing wide on the left wing and striker Jonathon Torres began to give the home sides defence real problems through constant hard work and battling.

The Rojillos drew level four minutes before the break. Inevitably danger man Juachi flew down the left wing and cut inside beating his defender and was eventually brought down by the Alcalá keeper and the Ref immediately pointed to the spot. The ever reliable Rubén Rodriguez converted the penalty and sent his side into half time with the game level at one apiece.

The Madrid side began the second half as they had begun the first half pinning the Lanzarote back four deep into their own territory. This time the Rojillos managed to hold out for eight minutes. Defender Juani crossed the ball on the edge of the area and Sub Moya headed home from close range giving the home side a 2-1 advantage.

Once again Lanzarote began playing better football when they were staring at defeat and not having much else to lose. Prior to the match Alcalá were sitting fifth from bottom occupying the relegation play off spot two points ahead of Lanzarote who were third from bottom. The importance of this match was obvious as both sets of players showed the commitment expected in a fierce relegation battle with no players holding back on challenges.

The tide had turned and the Rojillos were now dominant in possession with wave after wave of attack. The home side defended deeply and only threatened on the counter attack in search of a two goal cushion.

Finally, in the 73rd minute a great strike from the edge of the area by Juachi beat the outstretched Alcalá keeper and sailed into the far corner of the net and Lanzarote were level for the second time in the match with the score poised at 2-2 with a quarter of an hour remaining.

The closing stages of the match were frantic. In the 81st minute the home side had a glorious chance to take the lead for the third time when they were awarded a penalty. Roberto Izquierdo struck the spot kick well but the ball hit the foot of the post and away to safety.

The reprieve for the Rojillos did not last long. Four minutes into added on time and Lanzarote were dealt a crushing blow. Roberto Izquierdo redeemed himself from his penalty miss by controlling the ball inside the area and powered in a shot which beat Vilches and sent the home fans wild with joy as the ball settled into the back of the net with a 3-2 victory imminent.

The Ref blew straight away from the restart and all the Lanzarote heads dropped looking at the natural green grass of Madrid.

Lanzarote are in big trouble. Only a win will do next week if the Rojillos are realistically going to remain in Spain’s third league for a tenth consecutive season.

Next week the visitors will be Leganés. The Madrid side are in 7th place and six points off the promotion play offs. They will desperately be seeking three points as they are in a battle with six other sides for the final Copa Del Rey (F.A. Cup) spot up for grabs.

However Lanzarote do have a good record against the side that has spent 11 seasons in Spain’s Segunda A (Championship). Over the last five seasons Lanzarote have won this fixture three times and Leganés once with last year being a scoreless draw.

Women's Super League Clubs Revealed

A fortnight ago the Football Association announced the eight clubs that were successful with their applications to be part of the new FA Women’s Super League, launching in March 2011.

Arsenal Ladies FC, Birmingham City Ladies FC, Bristol Academy Women's FC, Chelsea Ladies F, Doncaster Rovers Belles, Everton Ladies, OOH Lincoln Ladies FC and Liverpool Ladies were the eight clubs given licences for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

Congratulations must go to the eight teams who have got into the new league, as it will not just enhance their status as a football club, but provide them a bigger platform to grow commercially and financially. 16 teams from around the country bid to be part of the league with the FA asking clubs to apply by completing a Club Development Plan, which had to comply with four specific pieces of criteria and guidelines.

These were: Finanical and business management, commerical and marketing, facilities, players and support staff.

The review process for the bids submitted was robust and thorough and all of the received bids were reviewed in great detail by an adjudication panel which included independent experts in the related business and football fields.

Looking at the eight clubs in question, via this hi-tech geographical map that i've produced you can see the locations of the clubs, which are represented as red dots. As you can see they are nicely spread around. This is an important point for the FA who will need to ensure that the league is able to build on the new popularity of the sport.

It's good that there Bristol Academy's selection in the league is a positive with football thriving in the city with the men's teams Bristol Rovers and City having success over the last couple of years. Academy are aligned with Bristol Rovers and have got support from the Bristol Academy of Sport, which is the reason why they changed their name to Academy instead of Bristol Rovers Women's FC.

Alarmingly, there are a couple of clubs that should have perhaps warranted an entry. Sunderland Ladies perhaps were derserving of a place in the division, after all they are top of the Women's Premier League at the moment having played a staggering six games more than Arsenal. They also got to the Womens FA Cup final last year.

Their stumbling block probably came due to the fact that although they share the badge and name of the men's team, they are financially independent and do not rely on the men's team for any additional funding. All teams in the league have to match
the £70,000 a year that the FA is prepared to give each team for the first two years of the league's operation.

"We can't afford to pay our players expenses, let alone £30,000 a year," said the Sunderland chairman, Maurice Alderson. "We run our whole club on less than half of that. I love the concept of the league and I'd love be part of it, but it's going to be very difficult."

Although the FA is right to have rules and critieria for league application, perhaps the league's adjudication panel could have looked at the recent success of the team with limited resources and given them a chance. The fact that there is no place for a club in the north west, an area of the country that literally breathes football is quite staggering. The recent success of Sunderland Ladies could sadly count for nothing as with the money coming in next year they will fall further away from the top teams and could decline as a club.

Another club that missed out was Leeds Carnegie, with OOH Lincoln Ladies probably taking their place after Carnegie. Due to missing out on the new league's money and commercial opportunities there should be great doubt cast over the club's future. It's a shame as Carnegie have backing from Leeds Metropolitan University and would have gathered great attention that way. But the University however could not commit to the budget needed to compete in the league and the team looks as if it will fold at the end of the regular season. OOH Lincoln Ladies play in the Northern Premier Division and although they have a good supporters base which is great for any club their selection to neutrals came as a suprise.

The FA believes the Super League will be the key platform to drive the women’s game forward in England. The Super League concept was developed to enable players in this country to earn a good living from the game whilst allowing Super League clubs to develop new revenue streams and support for women’s football.

With participation levels of women’s football at an all time high – currently 1.1 million girls play football in England – the Super League will play a pivotal role in ensuring the player pathway leads to a competitive, elite structure at the very top of the women’s game.

Kelly Simmons, Head of National Game, said of the announcement: “We are delighted with the quality of the bids we received. We are looking forward to working with the eight clubs in the run up to next year’s launch to put in place an exciting, high quality and sustainable new league, taking our women’s game to new heights.”

Minister for Sport, Gerry Sutcliffe, commented: “It’s fantastic that the Women’s Super League is a step closer to getting off the ground. Women’s football is one of the fastest growing sports in the country but there is still room for further growth. The Super League will shine the spotlight even brighter on the women’s game, encourage more young women to take up the sport and help develop stars that will represent the ever-improving women’s national team.”

The FA will meet with all Super League clubs this month to discuss next steps in the preparation process for the 2011 Super League launch. I hope that the league offers those eight clubs great support and ensures that the league expands to 10 or 12 teams for 2013 when there will probably be additions to the league. Hopefully then Sunderland Ladies will gain their entry, it would be a crying shame if they didn't

British Touring Car Championship 2010 Preview!

We at SportTrades like our Motorsport and not just F1, starting this weekend (tomorrow) is the new British Touring Car Championship season. And if last year was anything to go on when Colin Turkington claimed the drivers title in the last race, this years should be a classic.

Thanks to James Mappin, who runs BTCCCrazy.co.uk, we'll be bringing you the latest news throughout the season to do with the BTCC. Check out his twitter account , for all the latest news on the championship @BTCCCrazy

It's a sports series that is becoming poplular again after going into decline at the start of the millenium, as it hit it's peak in the 1990s. The last two seasons have brought record television viewing figures on ITV and record attendence figures at the race meetings.

Here's Mr Mappin's guide to the season:

2010 will see two manufacturers come to the fold once again with Team Honda returning as a works team along with works debutants Silverline Chevrolet. It's a boost to the series as long time BTCC entrants Vauxhall left the sport last year following in the wake of Seat who pulled out before the season even began.

Both works teams have fielded strong driver line up's with both having past champions with Matt Neal at Team Honda and Jason Plato at Silverline Chevrolet. Gordan Sheddon will be partnering Neal whilst Alex MacDowall will be making his debut in the BTCC alongside Plato in the Chevrolet Cruze after making the step up from the Elf Renault Clio Cup.

Plato will be looking to make it title number two as he looks set to take Andy Rouse’s record for the most all time number of wins of 60, requiring just 8 wins this season but will be pushed all the way by Matt Neal who will be racking up his fair share of race wins himself. Shedden will be given his best chance yet of making an impression on the championship whilst MacDowall will be out to prove himself in the BTCC in what could be the strongest car in the field. So the pressure is on the youngster.

BMW will have six of their cars battling it out this season with three different teams all using the BMW 320si, the car that took Colin Turkington to the title last season. The teams in question are West Surrey Racing, Airwaves BMW and newcomers to the series Forster Motorsport.

West Surrey Racing know what to do to win the BTCC and will be looking to emulate their feat of 2009 again in 2010 with a whole new driver line up. Rob Collard has made the switch over from Airwaves BMW and will partner Andy Neate who will be making his return to racing after his horrific crash earlier in his career. Collard has very much been at the forefront of the majority of the races throughout his BTCC career but has failed to make consistent race wins. His move to the WSR team could give him the break that Collard needs.

Colin Turkington was surprisingly missing off the list with reports suggesting that he has failed to find the funding however WSR were open to announce that they have a third car for Colin if and when he finds the budget. It's a shame that the popular drivers champion from last year has not made it to the grid. With the sport increasing in popularity it's staggering as to why no company has not backed Colin's entry as the sport offers great advertising exposure to any brand. Hopefully Colin will be back one way or another.

Airwaves BMW have also seen a big change in drivers with Mat Jackson and Steven Kane driving for Dave Bartrums Motorbase Performance outfit. Mat Jackson will be returning to the BMW after a short stint with the Chevrolet and will be looking for a strong season. Mat will be partnered by Steven Kane who will be making his return to BTCC after a year out of competitive racing. Kane is familiar with the Airwaves UK setup after spending two seasons with the team in 2007 and 2008 so there will be problem with him gelling with the team.

Forster Motorsport will also be entering two BMW 320si’s into the BTCC after making the step up from the MINI Challenge in which they competed in last season. Forster Motorsport will be using the ex-Mat Jackson BMW’s from the ‘07 and ‘08 season with drivers Arthur Forster and Martin Depper. Forster Motorsport have openly spoke about their chances in the 2010 season and will be just looking to give it their best shot and not expecting any major shocks in their debut season.

One of the big stories of the pre-season is the announcement that Team AON will be using an alternative fuel source to power their Ford Focus this season. After extensive testing in Spain, Mike Earle decided to go ahead with the decision to run the LPG fuel in association with one of their main sponsors, Calor. The team will also be allowed to use a turbocharged engine for the 2010 season due to the LPG providing a lower power output. The team have stayed loyal to their drivers that ended the back end of last season on a high and have signed Tom Chilton and Tom Onslow-Cole for what they hope will be a successful season.

Two drivers have also took up Alan Gows cost-cutting scheme and gone for the TOCA-NGTC engine supplied by Swindon Engines. Gow claims that using the engine, along with the new rules which come into effect in 2011, will help cut the running costs down by over half over the duration of the season. The two drivers in question are Andrew Jordan with Pirtek Racing and David Pinkney driving in his own Pinkney Motorsport team. Both drivers will be driving the ex-VXR Vauxhall Vectra’s both with striking liveries.

Tech Speed will again run under the Sunshine.co.uk banner with Paul O’Neill extended his stay at the team driving the Honda Integra. Paul will be joined by BTCC veteran, John George who will be offering the popular youngster experience as well as trying to match him out on track.

AmD Milltek Racing will bring a smile to all the Volkswagen fans out there as they will be running the VW Golf Mk5 with their driver Shaun Hollamby. This will be the first time that the BTCC has seen a VW since 1989. Shaun Hollamby will be making his debut in the BTCC after winning the Dunlp Sportmaxx driving a SEAT Leon. AmD hope to secure the funding for a second driver but at the moment they are concentrating on just the one.

Another 19 year old will be looking to make his mark on the BTCC this season. Matt Hamilton, who tasted the BTCC at the back end of last season will be driving a BTC-spec Honda Civic prepared by TH Motorsport. Matt was unsure whether he was going to make it onto the grid this year but he was able to confirm his entry a week before the deadline.

In 2008 we saw SEAT at the head of the pack more times than not. This season only one driver will be using the SEAT Leon. Tom Boardman, who has experienced the WTCC will enter the BTCC returning to the series which he first entered back in 2001 when he became the youngest driver in the BTCC at the age of 17.

Martin Johnson and Lea Wood have also been confirmed as official entrants in the BTCC. Martin Johnson will be racing for Boulevard Team Racing in his BTC-spec Vauxhall Astra Coupe whilst Lea Wood will be driving one of the three Honda Integras this season for his Central Racing team.

And last but not least, Triple Eight Engineering have signed up Phil Glew and Fabirizio Giovanardi as their two drivers for the season. Glew, last season's Clio Cup driver's champion was signed last week with Giovanardi signed less than 24 hours before the season begins. Both drivers will be racing Vauxhall Vectra's which 888 have great experience of racing. Giovanardi has been signed on initially for just the season opener at Thruxton, but there is a huge possibility if it goes well he could race the whole year.
