Front Row: Nuneaton edge out Hinckley in this local derby.

Hoppa had a trawl around the clubs in the Midlands and stumbled over this report. Thanks to Chris Campbell and all at Hinckley Rugby Club for the post and photo. With thanks also to our friends at Pitchero.

Poor first half performance leaves too much to do

By Chris Campbell | Sunday 28th October 2012

A poor first half performance meant that Hinckley had to settle for only a bonus point in their local derby with Nuneaton on Saturday.

Playing with a strong wind at their back, the home side conceded 3 tries to leave them trailing having to play against the elements, and in the end, despite a well worked come back, the win was out of reach.

Josh Smith opened the scoring with a 5th minute penalty which was immediately cancelled out with a successful kick from the visitors. Then, from the resulting restart
Hinckley managed to turn the ball over, however a pass from the resulting ruck went between the Hinckley players leaving a loose ball which was picked up by Elliot Brown who ran 70 metres to score a converted try.

Things got worse 5 minutes later, with a 2nd try coming as
Hinckley fell off tackles, and when the visitors ran in their third score after just 24 minutes to take the score to 20 - 3, it looked like it could be a very long afternoon for the home side.

Following this
Hinckley ralled well however. Firstly on 30 minutes Smith continued his strong kicking form with a second penalty, and then with Nuneaton down the 14, the Hinckley pack drove a lineout over the line, with Tom Ball coming up with the ball, giving him his first try for the club.

At 20 - 11 at half time, the odds were strongly with
Nuneaton, and the game looked close to beyond doubt when Nat Aston got a bonus point try for the visitors to extend their lead to 27 - 11, just 5 minutes after the break.
Hinckley however continued to fight and with an increasing amount of possession, and the opposition tiring, the game started to open up. This lead to two tries for Devon Constant, his 14th and 15th of the season. Josh Smith converted both of the scores to leave the score at 25 - 27 with 8 minutes to go.

Unfortunately however, another opportunity didnt present itself, and
Hinckley had to be content with just 1 point from yet another game they could, and possibly should have won.

Next week
Hinckley travel to Staffordshire, taking on Longton. Kick off time is still to be confirmed.
Hinckley: Smith, Hastie, Buckley, Harris, Constant; Culpin, McFedries; Cunningham (c), Ball, Peck, Salt, Marshall, Morfill, Horwood, Fearn. Reps: Macqueen, Barrett, Brocken

Get Your Kit On: British & Irish Lions 2013 Shirt

Thank you to our friends at ESPN Scrum for the info and picture.

The British & Irish Lions have unveiled their shirt for the 2013 tour of Australia.

The Lions kick off their 10-match tour in Hong Kong against the Barbarians on June 1 and they will be wearing a shirt that sports a collar reminiscent of the top they wore during the victorious 1997 tour of South Africa. The tour will be the Lions' 125th anniversary and the shirt also has an enlarged crest similar to earlier designs.

The "tonal hoop design" harks back to the top worn by the 1888 and 1891 tourists and the fabric is clima lite.

The Lions will be searching for their first series victory since 1997 and their first series win on Australian soil since 1989. The Lions, coached by Warren Gatland, will be visiting Australia for the first time since 2001 and apart from the Wallabies, will also be playing against all 5 Super 15 outfits ( Reds, Brumbies, Force, Tahs, Rebels) and a combined NSW/QLD outfit.

Hoop Zone: A good week at the Abbey

Thank you to our friends at Barking Abbey for the following match reports. Catch up next week with the team news in Hoop Zone. Better still go down and watch the men on the 3rd Novemeber (details below)

Barking Abbey made it three wins from three games in Vcars.co.uk Division 4 league action on Sunday afternoon, defeating Ware Rebels, 74-60, at Wodson Park Sports Centre.

Joe Lockwood had an 18 point, 12 rebound, double double to lead BA, David Akibo had 11, whilst Josh Steel finished with 10. Paulius Satkus added 8 points and 10 rebounds.

“We played inside/out and moved the ball well in our offense. As a team we are learning how to play up tempo, but at the same time taking care of the basketball,” commented head coach Frank Holloway.

“Joe Lockwood, Paulius Satkus, gave us some great minutes, as well as some big rebounds. David Akibo and Josh Steel shot the ball well tonight. Jefferson Davis and George Jarvis did an outstanding job at the PG spot. They moved the ball, and created open shots for their teammates. All in all, I couldnt be happier with the team’s performance. Everyone contributed in the hard fought road win.”

BA will look to continue their winning ways on November 3 at home (Barking Abbey Leisure Centre, 6.00pm tip) against Hertfordshire Warriors.

Meanwhile the U19's

Barking Abbey continued their winning streak in the U19 EB/BCS Premier League on Wednesday afternoon, routing Northfleet, 77-37, to remain undefeated four games into the season.

The result never appeared to be in doubt, as BA forced four straight turnovers to start the game, running out to a 10-0 lead and not letting Northfleet back into the game.

“It was nice to get a home win for our fans here at Barking Abbey,” said head coach Frank Holloway after the game. “I know the players really enjoyed playing in front of their classmates and teachers.”

Robinson Idehen (1997 born) had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead BA, with Niall Hegarty (1994 born) adding a 12 point, 10 rebound, double double of his own.

“Everyone played in tonight’s game, and everyone contributed,” Holloway continued. “We executed well, and did some good things on both sides of the ball. Michael and Robinson both came off the bench and gave us some great minutes tonight.”

The Under-19s will look to go 5-0 on November 14, when they play Shoebury away.

Sol y Futbol: Lanzarote fight back to claim a point.

Thanks to Mr Lane for braving the warmth of Arrecife, to bring us the latest match report.

LANZAROTE   2   U.D. IBARRA   2

Two goals in two minutes midway through the first half gave the Rojillos there traditional mountain to climb though a spirited second half fight back almost saw Lanzarote claim all three points.

The Conejeros (Locals) started brightly with right back Camacho shot come cross hitting the bar in the third minute. The home side dominated possession but when the Tenerife side got the ball they immediately gave it to their left winger Leandro who´s brilliant foot work and pace had the Rojillo defence in sixes and sevens the whole match.

In the 19th minute the Rojillos half cleared a corner only to find the ball arrive at Leandro´s feet. The small winger may only have a tiny frame but he unleashed a brilliant powerful drive and though the Lanzarote keeper got a hand to the ball he could only steer it into the roof of the net giving the visitors a 0-1 lead.

Two minutes later and Lanzarote were torn apart by the trickery of man of the match Leandro. The winger picked the ball up in his half and beat a couple of defenders before playing a one two then superbly struck his shot wide of Lanzarote keeper Machín to double his sides lead.

Not even half way through the first half and Lanzarote found themselves once again trailing the match 0-2. Heads were down and only a few minutes later the visitors could have further extended their lead with midfielder Emilio being denied by a good save low down from Machín.

Gradually the hosts got their act together and began to threaten the opposition. Centre back Kamara rose well from a free kick on the right wing but his powerful header fell straight into the arms of the keeper. Midfielder Javi Betancort also came close with a header but Lanzarote went into the break trailing 0-2.
The home fans were hoping their side were going to show some pride in the second half and they were not to be disappointed.

It wasn’t until the 57th minute that the Rojillos managed to pull a goal back. A strike from midfielder Victor was saved by the keeper but Rojillo´s winger Toñito picked up the pieces and fired in a cross which found Echedey who stroked the ball home putting his side well back into the game at 1-2.

Lanzarote then surged forward with wave after wave of attack whilst the Tenerife defence were forced to retreat, a goal looked inevitable. In the 72nd minute the goal finally arrived with Javi Betancort firing home from six yards following an almighty throw in by Kamara.

The Rojillos went in search of a winner and as the intensity increased so did the chances. Two minutes before full time and Lanzarote had a golden chance to win the match. Javi Betancort found himself with the ball at his feet in almost the exact position as his earlier goal. The impressive midfielder blasted low and hard but the Ibarra keeper Fran did well saving with his feet, the follow up shots were blocked and finally striker Miguel Yunes headed over from three yards.

It was a great game with the home fans appreciating the fight back their team did in these difficult times. Lanzarote remain one place out of the drop zone but have the opportunity at home this Thursday 1st November at 1pm home to climb the league ladder with the re-arranged match against 8th placed side S.D. Tenisca. The visitors will also be up for this match as a win would see them climb into fourth spot and the final playoff position.

Front Row: Aviva Premiership Round 7 update

Wednesday 24 October 2012

Hoop Zone: Barking Abbey Women and Men both win.

Barking Abbey Senior Women opened the Division 1 regular season with a 55-37 win over Sevenoaks Suns on Saturday evening in Sevenoaks.

“Pleased to get the ‘W’,” said head coach Mark Clark after the game. “It is always a difficult place to win. We shot the ball well and I am pleased with our defensive execution.”

Clark pointed to 1997 born Shanice Norton’s performance, describing it as “exciting” as she finished with 11 points. Georgia Jones had 22 to lead BA whilst veteran Ros Mason finished with 10 points.

BA will continue the regular season against Manchester Mystics on November 10, in Manchester.

As for the men:

Barking Abbey moved to 2-0 in the Division 4 regular season on Saturday, with an impressive 69-53 win over Greenwich Titans.

“We played with an tremendous amount of energy tonight,” said an extremely pleased head coach Frank Holloway after the game. “Everyone played well against a well balanced, more experienced team in Greenwich. We attacked the glass on both ends of the floor, shot well from the field, and made our free-throws. I couldn’t be happier with this group of young men.”

David Akibo led BA with 15 points, whilst Jefferson Davis added 12, and Paulius Satkus finished with 10.
Practice appears to be paying off for the young team, as Holloway feels there is no cap on what they can achieve this season. “I told our players after the game, if you continue to play this hard, and keep sharing the ball like you did, the skies the limit on what you can achieve,” he added.

The team will now face Ware Rebels away on October 28 (3.00pm BST tip off at Wodson Park Sports Centre).

Sol y Futbol: Lanzarote draw at Vera

Thankfully Lanzarote managed to get a game this week. Ian Lane reports on UD Lanzarote's draw in Tenerife.

C.D. VERA   0   LANZAROTE   0

Whilst a draw away in Tenerife against the side that pipped Lanzarote to the last playoff position last season may seem reasonable, the Rojillos (The Reds) are desperate for that feeling of a win which they have only experienced once this season and that was on the opening day.

The home side began the better knowing that their opponents have the knack of conceding early and after only three minutes should have gone in front. Defender Donato found striker Samu free in the centre of the Lanzarote box, his rushed effort narrowly whisked past the upright to the relief of the fragile Lanzarote defence.

The Rojillos soon found their footing and in the eighth minute Lanzarote´s most dangerous player this season Miguel Yunes fired a shot come cross which narrowly missed the target.

Lanzarote began to dominate but just couldn’t convert possession into goals with Toñito guilty of a poor miss firing over the bar with just the Tenerife keeper to beat.

Undoubtedly the best chance of the first half fell to the home side. Striker Samu latched onto a cross from Larsson and instantly fired in a shot which had the Lanzarote goalkeeper beaten but he saw his effort hit the bar and away to safety ensuring the teams went into the half time break with the score goalless.

As the second half began both sides seemed intent in not being defeated as the primary objective. The Rojillos dominated possession but created little whilst the home side relied on counter attacks.

The game sprang into life in the 89th minute. A free kick on the edge of the box for C.D. Vera was well saved by the Lanzarote keeper but as the ball fell loose the Tenerife side and fans strongly appealed for a penalty for an infringement on midfielder Juanqui. The Ref waved away the appeals and with the home side feeling aggrieved Pedrito picked up his second yellow card for dissent.

Moments later and the home side were reduced to nine men as sub Alex went in on a rash challenge on Rosmen and immediately was sent packing. With seconds remaining the Rojillos didn’t have the time to capitalise against the nine men so the game remained scoreless.

The point lifts Lanzarote out of the drop zone and up one position to 17th in the league table. Next Sunday Lanzarote host Tenerife side U.D. Ibarra. The newcomers to the league have adapted well and are just two points from the playoffs following four wins in their last six outings. Kick off time will be confirmed later in the week, Please check.

March to the Arch: Clarets defeat the Rocks and MttA Update.

We have reached the 1st Round proper of the F.A.Cup.  After all the fantastic football played, Chelmsford City carry the hopes of Sports Pulse into the next Round.  A match up against local rivals Colchester United.

East Thurrock certainly made the Clarets work for their place. We had followed East Thurrock from the 1st Qualifying Round.  On Saturday they managed to keep their cup dreams alive with a last minute equaliser. The Rocks brought the clarets home and what a game. The score was 2-2 after 90 minutes and 4-4 after extra time. The dreaded penalties, Chelmsford won 5-3 and make it through to the 1st Round, East Thurrock remain on top of the merit table with a fantastic 25 points.

So how are we going in March to the Arch 4.

We started, as always, at Barkingside in the Extra Preliminary round. Barkingside faced Great Yarmouth Town from Eastern Counties Division One, a group below the'side in Sports Pulse classifications. After a 1-1 draw the Great Yarmouth brought Barkingside home(ish), and comfortably beat them 3-0 and also earned a MttA bonus point.

The Preliminary Round saw Great Yarmouth entertain
Witham Town, from Ryman League Division One North. More bonus points were available to the Bloaters if they secured victory. Not to be, as Witham Town hammered them 8-1.

In the 1st Qualifying Round Witham travelled to East Thurrock United from the Ryman Premier League. Witham were obviously underdogs, but were riding high on the previous rounds result. A well fought match saw
East Thurrock win 2-0 and the Rocks travelled to Kingstonian.

East Thurrock made hard work of a very promising start but still ran out 3-2 victors in the 2nd Qualifying Round. Then in the 3rd Qualifying round they brushed aside Maidstone United 3 – 0 to set up the derby with Chelmsford, mentioned above.

The Merit Table as from today as follows:

1.  East Thurrock United    25 points
2.  Witham Town   10 Points
3.  Chelmsford City  6 points
4.  Great Yarmouth Town   5 points
5.  Barkingside  4 points
6.  Maidstone United  2 Points
7.  Kingstonian  1 point

Below is a reminder of the Merit Table points rules and classifications.

Sol y Futbol: Nice training session, but no match

We thought we would catch up with UD Lanzarote before we posts this weekends match reports. It appeared we had a no show last week, we felt the report was still worth running. Brilliant Ian a match report out of nothing, that's the sought of contributors we have here.

LANZAROTE   ?   V   S.D. TENISCA   ?  13th October 2012

What a strange turn of events. U.D. Lanzarote has no idea why the La Palma side never turned up for the match which had been brought forward at their request to Saturday afternoon at 4pm.

How disappointing for the many local and expat fans, with no Premiership or La Liga matches on due to International week a good crowd was forecast for the late afternoon clash.

S.D. Tenisca contacted Lanzarote late Friday morning explaining that the flight from Tenerife to Lanzarote had been cancelled by Islas Airways. After receiving a phone by our club secretary explaining to me that it was out of the visiting team’s hands therefore the match would probably have to be rescheduled to a later date this seemed to be the only fair option.

Later the next day the flight from La Palma to Tenerife flew on schedule and the connecting flight to Lanzarote arrived on time with 16 passengers none of whom were carrying boots.

The club received a certificate from Islas Airways stating that the flight arrived on time so Lanzarote had no alternative but to turn up for the match knowing that Tenisca were not on the island.

Adolfo Pérez´s men turned up in full kit and trained for a while and were all present at the 4pm kick off. The officials received Lanzarote´s team sheet and stayed the required 30 minutes then called off the match.
What happens now? The Rojillos and the Spanish football federation are still waiting for a reason why the visitors did not travel. I believe there are a possible two outcomes. Firstly, the La Palma side have a good explanation and the match will be played at a further date or secondly, Lanzarote are awarded the three points and a 3-0 win.

Whilst the second outcome is obviously more favourable U.D. Lanzarote´s players, president and fans would have much rather played the match and are bitterly disappointed.

Many thanks to this websites creator and ex Lanzarote player Ian Robinson. As Friday was a public holiday I was spending the night with my family in a hotel in Playa Blanca. We did not remember the password to the website so contacted Ian. He immediately put on the home page that the match was cancelled which prevented many fans turning up only to be disappointed.

Before heading to a Lanzarote match please check on Facebook, Lanzarote football club as I can always immediately have access to this. To those fans who turned up to the match and whom I chatted to, watched the Rojillos go through a training session and then gradually made their way back.

March to the Arch: Rocks leave it to the last minute.

We follow East Thurrock United, the Rocks, up the road to Chelmsford. Thank you to the Essex Enquirer for the match report. The replay will be on Tuesday night with the winner playing Colchester United in the 1st Round proper of the F.A.Cup.  We will bring you that match report along with the updated Merit Table and progress on Wednesday.

Chelmsford City  2   East Thurrock United  2

EAST Thurrock United live to fight another FA Cup day after a dramatic and exciting fourth qualifying round match at Melbourne, where the Ryman Premier Rocks more than matched their high-flying Blue Square Bet South hosts.

An incident-packed match went into ten minutes of added time, with Rocks grabbing a late, late equaliser when former East Thurrock player Max Cornhill got the last touch to a low cross and knocked the ball past his own keeper.

Chelmsford made a bright start and pegged Rocks back in the opening stages, but the visotrs survived a couple of goalmouth scrambles, settled to their task and dominated much of the rest of the first half.

A succession of corners saw them come close but without finding the final, decisive touch until the 14th minute when a ball was only half cleared, Ross Parmenter drove the ball back goalwards and Sam Higgins shaped himself to get a decisive headed flick past keeper Stuart Searle.

It was no more than Rocks served and they continued to press for a second goal, probing and pushing from midfield where captain Reiss Gilbey was once again putting in an inspirational shift, aided and abetted by some incisive passing from Ross Parmenter and the challenging runs of Kris Newby and Kye Ruel.

However, up top they failed to put the final touch to some some good moves, with several players snatching at half chances when a calmer approach might have produced dividends. Centre-forward Hakeem Araba was working hard but the genial giant sometimes stands accused of lacking venom and he was being well-marshalled by the home defence, particularly home skipper and former Thurrock player Kenny Clarke, whose darker nature couldn’t resist a kick at the Rocks player when he was on the ground.

Not seen by any official, Clarke got away with it and surprisingly Araba failed to get roused either. The striker has all the attributes you would want from a striker, height, pace and strength but if he can find a way to add controlled aggression to his game he will make an even bigger impact.

As the half approached its close there was a sense of frustration in the Rocks camp that they hadn’t increased the lead and they were to pay in the 44th minute when City got the better of a few contested refereeing decisions and pumped several balls into the Rocks box, finally getting a reward when David Bridges scrambled the ball home at the end of a goalmouth melee from Aiden Palmer’s corner.

The second half continued in much the same vein as the first, with Rocks having a lot of the ball but failing to create clear chances, while Chelmsford always looked lively on the counter attack, never-more-so than when Jamie Slabber cut inside and curled a shot that left keeper Richard Wray rooted to the spot but came back of the crossbar.

The deadlock continued and a pivotal moment came on 77minutes when Wray was injured as he bravely punched away a cross, sustaining a nasty blow in the face that left him with a rapidly closing eye and unable to continue after lengthy treatment. He was taken to hospital to have have stiches put in a nasty gash. Jamie Riley came off the bench to replace him but didn’t have too much to do until three minutes from normal time when he was unable to prevent a header from Clarke crashing into the net after he rose unmarked to head goalwards.

It was a goal that looked to have decided the tie but with ten minutes time added on for Wray’s injury, Rocks still had the opportunity to draw level and they went close with several scrambles.

However, it looked as if they were going to fall just short until they won a free kick outside the box with a minute and half to go. Rocks threw everything forward, including sub centre half Marc Gorbell as a makeshift striker and they packed the area. Everyone anticipated a lofted ball into the crowded box but Kris Newby, who had earlier been cautioned for handball - a booking that will keep him out of the first round proper f Rocks make it – delivered a clever low ball into the near post an as he attempted to clear under pressure the ball sliced off Cornhill’s boot and into the net to spark jubilation on the pitch from Rocks players and off it from a decent number travelling fans who had played their part in rousing their side to the last gasp finale.

They might have been silenced deep in the last minute when Clarets sub Anthony Cook hit the bar with a header but Rocks deserved the lucky break and will face Clarets with some confidence at Rookery Hill on Tuesday.

Rocks boss John Coventry said he was “frustrated” by the fact his side hadn’t won but added he remained confident that have the ability to complete a giant-killing act.

“We’ll go again Tuesday, we’ve looked at them, they’ve looked at us but we will give it a go. We have nothing to be frightened of, I think we are as good as them.”

Front Row: Tigers Edge Point a Minute Thriller in National 2 North

Hoppa heads to Sheffield Tigers, to watch their League 2 thriller. Thanks to Nigel Dakin and Ian Anderson for words and pictures.

Sheffield Tigers 42 - Bromsgrove 41

Poor play from the Bromsgrove kick-off gave the visitors a flying start. The ball was allowed to bounce twice in the Tigers twentytwo before a short touch kick enabled the Bromsgrove forwards and number eight Sam Gibbons to force a rolling maul from the lineout over the try line and Jon Critchlow converted. Bromsgrove had started much the better of the two sides and it needed a good tackle by prop Anthony Ross to break up another attack.
Bromsgrove nearly outflanked Tigers defence only for the referee to bring play back for Tigers offside and Critchlow added three more points and 10 - 0 after just seven minutes. Tigers then got into the opposition half and started to pass the ball with confidence. A good pick up of a low pass by Richard Joel enabled the ball to be passed down the line and Peter Swatkins raced in untouched from twenty metres. Tom Outram converted and the lead was cut to three points after ten minutes. Bromsgrove were kicking for position but when they were penalised Jon Buchanan made the first of many strong runs and off loaded to Jamie Broadley. He powered between two defenders before cutting inside the fullback for a seven pointer on sixteen minutes.

Tigers were now looking sharp and three minutes later a sustained attack forced a penalty and Outram added the three points. The strong Bromsgrove pack came back but a chance for the visitors was negated as winger Liam Wallace shepherded a chip to the corner into touch. Critchlow reduced the lead to just four points with a penalty on twentyeight minutes. Two minutes later it was a repeat of the Buchanan break and Broadley power show. This time from Buchanan’s pass he went outside a defender before shrugging off a would be tackler to race in. Outram again converted and the lead was 24-13 with ten minutes till half-time. Ross White had a seventy metre double kick and chase which was only just cleared by Bromsgrove before there was stoppage for what appeared to be a hamstring injury to the referee Stephen Rainey. There was just time for him to be replaced by an assistant referee and for fourth official Alick Bush to display his famous yellow shirt before the half-time whistle sounded.

The start of the second half was marred by an injury to Bromsgrove’s

Jamie Broadley - Try© Ian Anderson 2012

back-row player & captain Tom Warren. After an hour long delay for a neck injury he was taken to hospital by ambulance and the match restarted. We wish him a speedy and complete recovery. Callum Mackenzie replaced Steve Walker in Tigers back-row as Bromsgrove mounted pressure on the home try line. An error was expensive as having gained possession of the ball Tigers then lost it and the Bromsgrove prop Kevin Salisbury was driven over. Critchlow converted for 24-20. Gregor Hayter replaced Dave Price with White moving to hooker. This immediately saw Tigers pack take a scrum against the head and from Hayter’s pick up and drive Tigers nearly scored. Soon after a long floated pass by Buchanan saw winger Alex Graham step inside his man for a seven pointer. 31-20 after fortynine minutes. Back came Bromsgrove and five minutes later a poor pass on the half-way was pounced on by the visitors. Two missed tackles later the Bromsgrove centre Lloyd Lones scored under the posts to cut the lead back to four points again. From the restart Bromsgrove thought they had cleared their lines with a long kick to the Tigers ten metre line. Swatkins thought otherwise as he caught the ball and, with the defence rushing towards him, placed a diagonal kick into space near the corner. His pace won the race to the ball and he took a tackler over the line with him to edge out the lead to nine points after fiftysix minutes. Outram added a penalty four minutes later and the win looked secure at 39-27.

The Bromsgrove pack had other ideas as they began to get on top with strong driving mauls. From a Tigers knock-on at the base of a scrum the visitors forwards drove over the try line and replacement George Glenn was credited with the score. Critchlow again converted and with fourteen minutes left the home lead was down to just five points at 39-34. Tigers replaced Anthony Ross at prop with Anton O’Donnell as Tigers took play into the

Bromsgrove twentytwo. Joel stole the visitors lineout ball to set up two unsuccessful catch and drive attempts by the home forwards and Tigers had to settle for an Outram penalty. What an important three points that was to prove, as in the last minute the Bromsgrove pack again drove Tigers forwards over the try line for a seven pointer. There was no time to restart the game and Tigers had won a thrilling contest by just the one point.

Credit goes to both sides for a marvellous advert for rugby at this level. The win keeps Tigers in fourth equal spot in the league and Tom Outram’s seventeen points puts him on top of the league kickers with ninetyseven points. We wish the referee and Bromsgrove’s Tom Warren speedy recoveries and look forward to the return fixture in February. Bromsgrove have since reported that although Tom was taken to hospital as a result of a serious injury to his neck they are happy to say that his X-Rays showed no damage and he has been discharged.

This Saturday sees Tigers make the long trip to Luctonians. This will be another stern test as they have won five of their eight matches and are unbeaten at home.

Here is a quick reminder about Non League Day,

Non-League Day is the brainchild of James Doe, a lifelong football fan, supporter of QPR and follower of Harrow Borough FC. In James' own words:
"With England playing on Friday 12th October and the Premier League and Championship taking a week off, I urge all fans of the big clubs to get out and watch their local non-league teams instead on Saturday 13th October!
Given the current financial climate, clubs outside the football league need all the support they can get, so your presence at a game will be genuinely appreciated. With tickets and refreshments at a fraction of the cost, what's stopping you!"
Non-League Day is a celebration of the semi-professional and amateur game and a chance for fans of bigger clubs to experience football at a level they may be otherwise unfamiliar with. Moreover, it helps promote hundreds of clubs across the country who are almost exclusively volunteer run and do so much good for the local community.

Front Row: Aviva Premiership review Round 6

Tapes Up: Diamonds Gain Revenge Over Lions Albeit Too Little Too Late

Thank you to our friends at Diamonds Media and George English fot the following report and photo.

Newcastle Diamonds 54
Leicester Lions 39
Premier League Championship Play-Off Group Stage

Top Scorers:

Newcastle Diamonds - Mark Lemon 12 1, Claes Nedermark 11 1
Leicester Lions - Kauko Nieminen 15 1, Linus Eklof 7 3

With the League Championship out of mathematical reach for the Newcastle Diamonds in the new play-off system - despite finishing on top of the final Premier League table - the Tynesiders had pride on their minds to avenge the 50-40 beating they took at Leicester on Saturday night.

In their league visit to Brough the Lions fell foul of a rampant home side who hammered them 62-31 so they too had a point to prove, but in Heat One it was all square 3-3 with a great win for Claes Nedermark from the gate but Stuart Robson found the going tough struggling to get on terms with Linus Eklof in third.

Heat Two had to be re-started after Lewis Blackbird spun on bend two of the second lap causing the race to be halted, and in the re-run guest for Newcastle from Edinburgh shot away for the three points in a home 4-2 putting the Diamonds into the lead 7-5.

That lead was extended to six after a solid 5-1 from Christian Henry, fresh back from a minor injury the night before at Leicester and Mark Lemon taking a good second over Jan Graversen moving the score onto 12-6.

Ludvig Lindgren made a massive move round Magnus Karlsson to lead well and win as Wethers tried everything in his ammo box to nip hard under Karlsson but just failed to take second on the line in the 4-2 taking the score on to 16-8.

Kauko Niemen flew from the Heat Five gate followed by a swift Eklof up front to form a solid barrier to protect their 1-5 from Henry and Lemon, the former falling on the last lap to narrow the score to 17-13.

Two shared races followed but going into the first bend Eklof spun 360 degrees and fell to be excluded by the referee from the re-run in which Nedermark and Wethers joined forces in a determined home 5-1 to restore the eight point lead 28-20.

Lemon in Heat Nine and Robson in the 10th finally got back to winning ways taking respective heat wins, the latter with Nedermark taking a second behind his partner to score four races unbeaten with the Heat 10 5-1 taking the score to 37-23 leading to a tactical ride in the 11th for Nieminen.

And the tactical worked brilliantly for the Loins who banged in a massive 1-8 narrowing the gap to 38-31 with four races left on the card.

Two 5-1s in Heats 12 and 14 sealed the Diamonds win with maximum play-off points, but the final lay just too far away from Newcastle who now turn their attentions to the Knockout Cup in which they have the Workington Comets next Sunday against Workington's Comets in the semi final first leg at Brough Park with a later start time again of 7.30pm.

Team manager George English said: "Well at least we got a good win tonight but the damage was already done and we're out of the League Title chase for 2012, which is a major disappointment to our table-topping squad, but that's the rules. Now we will pick ourselves up and aim for a cup final place once we dispose of the Comets."

March to the Arch 4: F.A.Cup, Rocks shatter the 'Stones

East Thurrock continue to represent Sports Pulse in the F.A.Cup. In the 3rd Qualifying Round they entertained Maidstone United. Full report, with thanks from our friends at Essex Enquirer.

East Thrrock United  3  Maidstone United  0

EAST Thurrock progressed in relative comfort against Maidstone who couldn’t replicate their FA Trophy giantkilling against Margate last week as John Coventry’s side stifled their attacking spearhead and ran the show from midfield.

Both sides showed intent from the off, with Maidstone enjoying their best period in the match in the opening exchanges, hitting the inside of Richard Wray’s post from a goalmouth scramble, though the assistant ref’s flag was raised for offside.

Rocks responded with a quick break and Kye Ruel blazed over from close range, and then Sam Higgins was through on goal, only for re Stuart Pawley to pull play back for a free kick again Maidstone’s Alex Flisher, who was probably glad of the yellow card he received rather than the ref playing advantage. However, it was to have repercussions later in the game.

Further East Thurrock pressure saw Hakeem Araba take a tumble in the box but nothing was given. Soon after the same player hesitated rather than shooting when a chance opened up and then Tom Stephen’s shot was blocked.

The home side’s pressure finally told on 23 minutes when Ruel’s goal-bound header was blocked by the hand of Sam Bewick, who was cautioned. Higgins smashed home the spot kick.

The lead should have been doubled a couple of minutes later when Reiss Gilbey was put through but with just the onrushing keeper Charlie Mitten to beat the Rocks captain hoisted his effort way over the bar.

However, on 35 minutes the diminutive midfielder did hit the net, prodding home from close range after Ruel had slipped in Higgins to deliver a low ball across face of goal.

The second half was became a dogged midfield battle, with Maidstone being reduced to ten men after 67 minutes when Flisher appeared to be fouled but Mr Pawley waved play on. Flisher was outraged and his protests cost him a second yellow.

A game that had become dour became even more of a stalemate after that and though with seven minutes to go Newby could have put paid to any home anxiety but fired wide when well-placed. However, with two minutes to go he did so, picking his way through the visiting defence and clipping the ball past Mitten.

There was still time for Kye Ruel to head over from close range and at the other end, as the game entered added time Ade Olorunda headed over from little more than a yard out when he seemed certain to give Stones a consolation.

Eat Thurrock United will now travel up the road to Chelmsford City in the 4th Qualifying Round. Win that and the 1st Round proper looms.

We will update the table to include the last 2 rounds later in the week.

Sol y Futbol: Lanzarote poor performances continue

Ian reports from Arrecife, on a match where Lanzarote should have gained maximun points.

LANZAROTE   2   CD SAN PEDRO MÁRTIR   3

The worst possible outcome that could have happened on Sunday would have been for Lanzarote to lose and lowly San Isidro to at least grab a point. This is exactly what happened and the Rojillos are now in the bottom three and a mighty eight points adrift of a playoff spot after only six games.

For the third home match in a row the Rojillos fell behind within one and a half minutes. Not only does that put the Conejeros (locals) on the back foot it also means the game plan has been thrown out of the window seconds after the referee blows his whistle to start the match.

After just 90 seconds a terrible back pass by defender Taja was intercepted by striker Julio, he immediately fed team mate Rubén Pulido who gratefully accepted the gift by just tapping the ball home into the vacant net giving his side a shock 0-1 advantage.

After regaining their composure Lanzarote began playing some of the best football of the match. A ball crossed in from the right found Vladi on the far post, the ball was high but the midfielder shaped his body well and wrapped his foot around the ball but his bullet of a shot unfortunately hit the body of the San Pedro goalkeeper and was cleared.

In the space of four minutes the Rojillos reversed the score line. In the 27th minute Alex Yunes fired in to level the scores and in the 31st minute a wonderfully worked goal which ended in winger Toñito supplying a deadly low and powerful cross along the six yard box which found Rosmen who stroked the ball home to give the Rojillos a 2-1 lead.

Lanzarote were now well on top but in the 34th minute the game was to take another turn as Vladi received a straight red for retaliation. It may have seemed harsh but raising your hands in today’s game attracts immediate attention to the Ref.

The Rojillos were still on top and should have added another just before half time with Rosmen failing to convert a good chance. As the half came to an end Lanzarote manager must have been pulling out what little hair he has left as he had to change his tactics for a second time.

The Gran Canarian side came out for the second half smelling blood and had the Lanzarote defence at full stretch. In the 63rd minute and with the Rojillo defence already working overtime a neat chip to the far post found striker Rubén Pulido who comfortably nodded home his and his sides second of the match to level the score at 2-2.

The game really opened up and was hugely entertaining with both sides sensing victory. In the 85th  minute Toñito was put through down the left and at full pace shrugged off the defender and as the keeper came out the Lanzarote winger went for the chip and at full stretch the Gran Canarian keeper made a terrific one handed save.

It was still anyone’s game and in the 93rd minute what seemed a foul on Jotha in midfield was not given and San Pedro were on the counter attack. Midfielder Toba flew down the right wing and pulled the ball back for the oncoming Rubén Pulido who made no mistake blasting home from six yards to win the game and claim the match ball with a hat trick.

Incredibly Lanzarote came straight back and seconds after the visitors going in front sub Juancar picked the ball up in midfield and beat a couple of defenders and hit a belter from 20 yards, as the crowd rose to their feet the ball hit the underside of the bar and bounced high back off the goal line, first to react was Miguel Yunes who had to wait momentarily for the ball to come back down but then superbly headed goal bound only to see the goalkeeper react brilliantly tipping the ball over the bar for a corner.

As the corner was floated in the Lanzarote goalkeeper ventured forward and got his head on the ball but the San Pedro defenders cleared the danger and held on to claim all three points.

It may have been disappointing but the crowd will have no complaints for entertainment value but after the opening day win Lanzarote have only picked up 2 points out of a possible 15 which leaves them third from bottom claiming the final relegation spot.

Next Sunday the Rojillos travel to Gran Canaria to play Unión Viera who have only tasted defeat once this season.

GOALS
0-1   min 2  Rubén Pulido
1-1   min 27 Alex Yunes
1-2   min 31 Rosmen
2-2 min 63 Rubén Pulido
2-3 min 93 Rubén Pulido

Front Row: Hoppa stops off at Richmond Rugby Club.

Hoppa moves up a level and enjoys finding out about this fantastic game in National League 1. Thank you to Richmond Rugby for providing the post and picture. Where next week - who knows!

Richmond 27  Ealing 27.

In front of a crowd of just under a thousand, local rivals Richmond and Ealing fought out a most thrilling and dramatic draw, which will long stay in the memory of those people fortunate enough to see it. League leaders Ealing Trailfinders were pushed all the way by a really fired up Richmond side and it was only in the last ten minutes that the visitors managed to claw their way back into the game. Richmond will rue two second half injuries which caused wholesale reorganisation and undoubtedly opened the door for the league leader’s late barnstorming recovery.

Richmond made four changes from the previous week, Harison Edwards and Simon Ackroyd coming into the back row, and Nick Moore and Luke Cousins returning in the backs.

The first twenty five minutes of the game were dominated by Richmond but Ealing absorbed everything thrown at them. It was the home forwards who generally caught the eye as they dominated, securing a lot of line out ball and using the maul to good effect.  Twice Richmond set up strong line out positions but the Ealing defence was robust and conceded little. Frustratingly the first score, after twenty-six minutes, then went to an Ealing breakaway as the Trailfinders’ backs showed their class. A rare individual break in the centre was skilfully supported, Phil Chesters giving the scoring pass to Ronnie McLean-Dents. Tom Wheatcroft added a straightforward conversion.

Despite the score, the relentless Richmond pressure was now beginning to take its toll. Referee Philip Davies repeatedly penalised the visitors at the breakdown, before giving a final warning to the team. Just on the half hour, Anders Nilsson duly received a yellow card and the home pack strove to take advantage. One drive was just held up to general consternation and two minutes later, the visitors drove their opponents triumphantly off the ball. But Richmond were still not to be denied, and when prop Tim Brockett was also yellow carded, Richmond finally took full advantage to drive over the line, Edwards getting the touch down for a 5-7 scoreline.

Buoyed by the try, the home side now looked re-energised and a second try followed four minutes later. Man of the match Edwards made a typical scything break and he was well supported by the impressive Ackroyd who took the ball on to the 22. Scrum half Jamie Gibbs was well up and in turn fed Chris Davies, who charged in under the posts from fifteen metres. An excellent team try was converted by Tom Platt to give his side a 12-7 half time lead. The final action of the half saw Richmond go over the line again in the far corner but the scoring pass was forward.

Back to fifteen men in the second half, Ealing remained unable to break the stranglehold and the home side were now much more confident on the ball. After ten minutes, Richmond added their third try and it resulted from another dazzling passage of rugby. This time James Greenwood was given a yard of space to outflank the Trailfinders’ defence on the left and when he chipped ahead, he was clearly obstructed, Mr Davies signalling a penalty. However the Richmond forwards made this unnecessary, sweeping on to regain possession before setting up the backs. Greenwood was once more involved, coming in from his wing, before skipper Will Warden took the final pass to dive over by the posts, Platt extending the lead to 22-7.

Looking shell shocked, the visitors pulled back three points with a penalty. Despite the setback, momentum was still with Richmond and a fourth try soon followed, Edwards again the scorer as substitute Robbie Shaw teed up his forwards well. With the score now 27-10, Richmond looked in dominant position but injury now played a cruel part, as fly half Cousins and centre Toby Quarendon both left the field with knocks. As a result Richmond were forced into a sequence of positional changes, with lock Charlie Lenygon now the second backs substitute. Louis Grimoldby came in at fly half, Edwards moving into the centre, Davies to No 8, and Platt to the wing. Unsurprisingly Richmond now set themselves to hold on to their lead for the last quarter and Ealing at last saw an opportunity to run at a disrupted and unfamiliar defence.

Unfortunately the first Ealing comeback try, a psychologically important one, was distinctly soft as Lee Starling took a loose line out ball to canter over unchallenged. Richmond in response almost managed a fifth try to seal the match. But the visitors’ pressure was now overwhelming and home nerves were jangling. With momentum now firmly with the visitors, Owen Bruynseels scored the next try, inevitably benefitting from a trademark Ben Ward crosskick but the home defence should not have let the winger escape. With seven or eight minutes left, another beautifully weighted lobbed kick found Bruynseels again, this time in space and unopposed, and the eighth try of the game gave the visitors a bonus point and levelled the score at 27-27.

There was one final chance for Ealing to steal victory but Ward’s last minute drop goal slid well wide and both sides had to settle for a draw and three points. The two clubs will each talk of missed opportunities and unfavourable luck but a draw was probably a fair result on a day when rugby was undoubtedly the winner.

Director of Rugby Steve Hill commented; ‘Today we showed this is the league we should be in. To put the league leaders and promotion favourites under so much pressure in all areas was a real testament to all the hard work the squad has put in since July. Our control of the ball for the vast majority of the game was excellent and the ambition we demonstrated in attack was tremendous. This should serve as a really positive springboard from which to continue into the season.’
