Sol y Futbol: Lanzarote too Hot to Handle

It's back - Sol y Futbol. He's back - Mr Ian Lane, who again will be taking us through the season.

U.D. REALEJOS 2 LANZAROTE 3

29th August 2010

U.D. Lanzarote kicked off their Season with a thrilling away win in the blistering heat of Tenerife finding the winner deep into injury time.

The Tenerife side began the game the better of the two sides. In the 11th minute claims for a penalty for the home side was waived away from the official as keeper Alejandro seemed to have brought down striker Rayco.

Minutes later and only a fine save from the 21 year old new Lanzarote goalkeeper kept the scores level after a fine shot from midfielder Juan David from the edge of the box.

The Rojillos (reds) then began to get into their stride. In the 31st minute Lanzarote took the lead. A dangerous free kick swept in by ex Real Madrid player Jotha fell to a host of players but quickest to react was centre back Eliot giving the Rojillos their first goal of the season.

Eliot had played for Lanzarote a couple of years ago but had to take a season out through knee ligament damage and spent last season with fellow local club Marítima.

On the stroke of half time Lanzarote doubled their lead. A free kick a yard outside of the area was fired home by the impressive Ayoze Pérez.

Rojillos new manager Quico De Diego would have been pleased with his team’s first half performance but the beginning of the second half Lanzarote did not commit people forward and were looking to settle with what they had.

The home team had other ideas and on the hour mark Realejos were back in it. Keeper Alejandro was adjudged to have pushed striker Lito and from the resulting spot kick the score line was reduced to 1-2.

In the 84th minute Rojillos striker Rosmen who had spent six months on the side lines through injury came inches away from restoring his sides two goal cushion. His strike was superbly saved by the Tenerife keeper.

With just a minute remaining disaster struck. A cross from the left wing by defender Alex found sub Alemán who neatly tucked the ball in between the sticks believing he had earned a point for his side.

This certainly woke Lanzarote up and two minutes into injury time sub Echedey latched onto a defensive mishap and stole the show planting the ball wide of the keeper earning his side the 2-3 victory.

The Rojillos have only one thing on their mind and that is a swift return to Spain’s third flight of football and starting off with an away victory is definitely going in the right direction.

Next week Lanzarote play their first home game of the campaign against last season’s best side C.D. Corralejo.

0-131st min Eliot
