The Sting: Hull Wasps throguh to 2nd Round of National Shield

Hull Wasps 118 Tees Valley Mohawks II 72

HULL Wasps booked a trip to the second round of the National Shield for the third time in three years after crushing Tees Valley Mohawks 118-72.

Hull launched themselves out of the blocks with an incredible 41-8 first quarter in player-coach John Brignell’s first home game in charge.

Brignell led by example with 30 points, 14 coming in his side’s dominant opening quarter, to lead all scorers against a Tees Valley side that could only raise five players.

The 6ft 8in centre said: “I was impressed with the way we played as a team today. We shot the lights out from the outside. It seemed that when players started hitting their three-pointers, it inspired confidence in the other players to make their shots.

“We still need some work on the defensive end as there were times when Tees Valley’s players had easy looks at the hoop, but we will work on that before our next game.”

Centre James Rayner came off the bench to score 20 points. Captain Jamie Goodwin hit 19, including 17 in the second quarter, guard Adrian Blatherwick hit 16, including four three-pointers, and guard Matt Fawcett added 15.

Wasps will now face Durham Wildcats II at home in the second round after they defeated Middlesbrough Lions by just 2 points on Sunday afternoon. The home tie will take place on Sunday 24th October, 3:00pm.
