Fix 'n' Mix: The Seagulls fly to the Potteries for Round 5 of the F.A.Cup

The Seagulls, Brighton & Hove Albion, travel to the Potteries to face Stoke City in the 5th Round of the F.A.Cup. A tough game but Brighton, who represent SportTrades as our 'adopted' team, have pulled off some surprise results.  There is no doubt that this is their biggest test to date, in the March to the Arch series.

Kult & Punk, after watching the team shoot into 12th after a fantastic win last weekend, they have a daunting task.The St Pauli boys travel to Borussia Dortrmund on Saturday.

Sol y Futbol: In what only can be described as a disappointing result last time out, UD Lanzarote travel to Las Zocas on Sunday, to get back on track and reclaim top spot.

In Rugby League, London Skolars continue with group games in the Northern Rail Cup.  York City Knights are Sundays visitors to the New River Stadium, kick off 1500.

IN Rugby Union, Harpenden face Grasshoppers at Redbourn Lane on Saturday.  They lost narrowly last weekend against UCS Old Boys in the league.

Hockey, Jesmond Parish Churches Men take on the might of Nortumbria St Georges in the league.  The ladies have a weekend off.

Hull Wasps have a busy weekend on the back of a victory against Newcastle Eagles 2nds last week. SportTrades Basketball team travel to the North West. They play Stockport Eagles on Friday, tip off 8.20pm, before travelling to Burnley on Saturday, tip off 2pm.

Ice Hockey, the pride of Essex also have a busy weekend.  Chelmsford Chieftains host Cardiff Devils on Saturday, face off 17.40, before travelling to Oxford City Stars on Sunday, face off 18.15.

Sol y Futbol: Lanzarote knocked off top spot by Las Palmas

Ian reports from Arrecife, on a disappointing defeat for UD Lanzarote.  Let us hope they can get back on track next week.

U.D. Lanzarote are knocked off top spot following a shock defeat to lowly C.D. Mensajero and a win for the Rojillos closest rivals Las Palmas B sees the Gran Canarian outfit leapfrog Lanzarote to regain leadership of the Tercera Division (fourth tier).

All clubs at some point in the season have to deal with an injury crisis and for Lanzarote their time had come. Eight of the squad were injured and a further two out due to suspension. The four outfield players sitting on the bench were either carrying knocks or returning from long term injuries.

Drafted into the squad was Cadete player (under 16´s) Wilson. The shocked 15 year old debutant started the match on the right side of midfield.

Neither side dominated in the opening stages however the first good chance of the match fell for the Conejeros (locals). Ironically it was the youngster Wilson who was going to taste his first strike at goal in Spain’s fourth tier of football. The under 16´s star was put through with just the keeper to beat but with the knowledge that the defender was rapidly closing him down he rushed his attempt and the keeper saved with ease.

Meanwhile the La Palma side were making a mockery of their poor league position confidently passing the ball around and were a constant threat to the Rojillos back four.

In the 25th minute the visitors had an unbelievable chance to take the lead. Striker Yeray muscled his way past the last central defender but with the ball positioned perfectly for a clean strike, he somehow hooked his six yard shot wide of the left upright.

The reprieve didn’t last long. Less than a minute later the La Palma side got the goal they deserved. Midfielder Joel lashed the ball low and hard from 12 yards which whistled past the Lanzarote keeper Ruymán ending his run of five games without conceding.

Just after the half hour a terrific run from Toñito down the right flank was finished off with an inch perfect cross into the centre, striker Yaco arrived on cue but his powerful header flew a foot over the bar. The visitors could have extended their lead just before the break but the header from Borja Martín flew straight into the arms of the grateful Lanzarote keeper.

The visitors came out for the second half not looking to sit back and guard their slender lead; on the contrary the first opportunity fell to them in the 52nd minute. The hard to handle front man Yeray fed Borja Martin but the midfielders second clear cut chance of the game was fired wide from just in front of the penalty spot.

Lanzarote began to match the tempo of the away side with Jotha orchestrating the attacks from the centre of midfield. The visitors organized defence made life difficult for the Rojillos and to break through this stone wall was not going to be an easy task. In the final 10 minutes the home side was firing on all cylinders. Sub Rosmen still nursing an injury was brought on and so nearly the gamble paid dividends.

In the 42nd minute Toñito raced to the byline and pulled the ball back for Rosmen, Lanzarote´s top marksman blasted the ball goal bound but incredibly keeper Kevin saved with his toe sending the ball high and over. Two minutes later and a good header from Rosmen from 2 yards was smothered on the line by the impressive keeper.

The match could have gone on for another twenty four hours but it just seemed it was one of those days where the high flying Rojillos were not going to score.

Las Palmas B now open up a two point lead at the top. Tenerife B also won and move back into third position seven points behind Lanzarote.

The Rojillos will travel to Tenerife next week and face another in form bottom club Las Zocas. Whilst spending a large part of this season in the bottom four a nine game run with only one loss has pushed the Tenerife side up to 16th spot three points off the drop zone. Meanwhile Las Palmas B begin their three consecutive away matches including the tough derby game against arch enemies Tenerife B.

Rugby League: Skolars defeated at a damp Doncaster on Sunday

Skolars fell to a disappointing defeat on Sunday with Doncaster making the best of the rainy conditions at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Doncaster enjoyed the early stages of the game as Skolars struggled to gain possession. Chris Spurr opened the scoring for the home side finishing a quick passing move after Skolars had conceded a penalty close to their try line.

Skolars scored what was to be their only try from their first real attack of the game. Tony Williams drew the defemce in before offloading to Dylan Skee, who got the ball out for Dave Arnot to touchdown. They then worked hard in defence, but conceded two tries before half-time, Liam Crawley pushing over before Scott Spaven slipped through a gap to score.

Skolars were only 12 points down at half-time and played with more grit after the restart. However, after a strong run by Saqib Murtza, a long Dylan Skee kick was chased down by Arnot but just rolled dead. The Scottish international was then harshly deemed to have delayed the restart and was sin-binned. That gave the Dons a man advantage and they took their opportunities well with two tries in seven minutes from Jack Ely.

The final quarter of the game was a dour affair with a converted Kyle Kesik try for Doncaster being the only score.

Aviva Premiership Rugby burst back into action this weekend after a four-week break. Some crucial games for clubs at the top saw Leicester Tigers extend their lead, plus another convincing home win for Exeter Chiefs saw them move comfortably above the bottom three clubs.

At Edgeley Park on Friday night, Nick Abendanon, one of 12 players released back from the England squad earlier this week, ran in a crucial first-half try that inspired Bath to a hard-fought away victory over Sale Sharks. Sale showed good spirit and ran in a well-worked score from former England wing Ben Cohen shortly before half-time, but with the boot of Olly Barkley weighing in with a conversion and four penalties it was to be Bath’s night. Final score: Sale Sharks 7, Bath Rugby 19.

On Saturday Saracens kept up the pressure on Aviva Premiership Rugby leaders Leicester Tigers as they fought back from behind to inflict a home defeat on Northampton Saints, which drops them to third in the table. An entertaining first half with both sides playing some open rugby saw Saints go in at half-time with a four-point lead. The second half was equally thrilling but after Saints’ Roger Wilson was sent to the sin-bin for a high tackle, Saracens accelerated with Matt Stevens going over for a try under the posts, converted by Alex Goode followed by a penalty in the final 10 minutes. A 25-metre drop goal by Brad Barritt in the last minute finished the game off to the delight of the Saracens fans. Final score: Northampton Saints 15, Saracens 29.

At the Madejski Stadium on Saturday Newcastle Falcons matched their hosts London Irish in the first half going in just 10-7 down at half time. Tries for Newcastle came from Jimmy Gopperth and Gcobani Bobo, however it was London Irish that dominated play in the second half and clinched a satisfying win, thanks to tries from Ryan Lamb, Clarke Dermody and Seilala Mapusua and points kicked by Ryan Lamb and Chris Malone. Final score: London Irish 23, Newcastle Falcons 14.

Also on Saturday, Exeter Chiefs ended Harlequins’ run of nine consecutive wins with a convincing victory at Sandy Park. The South-West outfit gained revenge for their 40-20 defeat at The Stoop in September and stretched their advantage over the bottom three in the Aviva Premiership Rugby table to seven points. Gareth Steenson kicked 15 points for Exeter Chiefs plus a second half try from Tom Johnson, to Harlequins two penalties from Nick Evans. Final score: Exeter Chiefs 20, Harlequins 6.

At Headingley Stadium on Sunday Leicester’s Tuilagi brothers made light of the Tigers’ international withdrawals with two tries against Leeds Carnegie that helped strengthen their position at the top of the Aviva Premiership Rugby table. England Saxons new boy Manu Tuilagi scored a first-half try and his Samoa international elder brother Alesana sealed the win with a second-half score, alongside five points from the boot of Jeremy Staunton. Leeds showed a strong second-half pack effort and along with three penalties from new fly-half recruit Adrian Jarvis, earned themselves a losing bonus point. Final score: Leeds Carnegie 9, Leicester Tigers 15.

At Adams Park Gloucester Rugby climbed to fourth in the Aviva Premiership Rugby table with a hard-earned away win over London Wasps. The Cherry and Whites had made a 10-0 lead by the break thanks to a try from wing James Simpson-Daniel and a conversion and penalty from fly-half Nicky Robinson. After the break Robinson’s kicking boots deserted him as he missed three further penalty attempts while Dave Walder’s trusted boots slotted in three successful kicks for the hosts. However it wasn’t enough to give the hosts any more than a losing bonus point. Final score: London Wasps 9, Gloucester Rugby 10.

Basketball: Wasps get back to winning ways with victory over the Eagles

HULL Wasps came back from their 2-game losing streak with an emphatic 111-65 victory at home to Newcastle Eagles.


Hull burst from the blocks and pressed their younger opponents at every opportunity, forcing a string of turnovers in a first quarter that ended 27-9 to the hosts.

They stepped up a gear on the offensive end of the court in the second period, hitting an impressive 34 points as player-coach John Brignell , who scored 26 points in the game to lead all scorers, and captain Jamie Goodwin, who hit 21, feasted on the opportunities close to the basket.

Hot-shooting guard Ade Blatherwick took over in the third period, torching Newcastle for 12 of his 18 points for the game, all coming from behind the three-point line.

Newcastle found some defensive toughness and offensive creativity too late, slightly edging the final period 24-22.

Brignell said: “We played some excellent committed defence against a young Newcastle side with a lot of energy. They are not the best side we will play this season, but if we play like that against the top teams in the league, we will come out on top more often than not.”

Hull face a double-header away at Stockport Falcons and Burnley next weekend.

Things are starting to look decidedly grim for Mönchengladbach after they went down 3-1 at fellow strugglers St. Pauli, having taken the lead early on. The five-time German champions remain adrift at the bottom on 16 points, while the hosts chalked up another victory over a direct rival for the drop to move up to twelfth for the time being. They also remain unbeaten in 2011.

De Camargo off

Gladbach got off to the ideal start at the Millerntor, going in front in the ninth minute when Mike Hanke latched onto a terrible back-pass from Moritz Volz and played in Igor de Camargo to slot the ball past home keeper Thomas Kessler. Hero turned villain in the 22nd minute however, when goalscorer de Camargo was red-carded for retaliation following a scuffle with Matthias Lehmann. The St. Pauli player was also booked after dropping theatrically to the ground.

A man up, the hosts tried to raise the tempo, but with limited success until the 37th minute, when Gerald Asamoah produced an inch-perfect cross from the left which Max Kruse volleyed home to get St. Pauli back on level terms. After the interval, the Hamburg outfit really started to make the extra man tell. Just eight minutes in, Charles Takyi worked his way free down the left and fed the ball through to Asamoah, who had little trouble slotting home his fifth goal of the season to make it 2-1. Five minutes on from that, Lehmann latched onto a long through ball to run through on the left and fire home number three, after which there would be no way back for depleted Gladbach.
