Hoop Zone: Barking Abbey Women have a winning start to 2013

Thank you to the team at Barking Abbey for the following post and photo.

Barking Abbey Senior Women started the new year off with a victory in VCars.co.uk Division 1, beating NASSA Stars, 48-43, at UEL Sports Dock on Sunday afternoon.

Despite being without point guard Georgia Jones, who has left BA to join Romanian side Cluj Napoca for the remainder of the season, strong performances from Melita Emanual-Carr and Shanice Norton allowed Abbey to come away with the win.

“I’m very pleased to get a win in our first game without Georgia,” said head coach Mark Clark after the game. “Again, we missed a lot of shots we would expect to make, but we have to credit NASSA for making our lives difficult in the second half.

“Melita and Shanice stepped into Georgia’s shoes well, and Ros (Mason) showed great leadership.”
Emanuel-Carr had 14 points to lead BA, who now sit second in Division 1 behind City of Sheffield with a 5-1 record, and Ros Mason added 10 of her own.

Abbey will now have six days to prepare to take on Cardiff Archers at Barking Abbey Leisure Centre (Jan 12, 8:00pm tip off).

Ella Clark has won the 2012 Beach Classic tournament MVP

Barking Abbey graduate Ella Clark has won the 2012 Beach Classic tournament MVP, as Long Beach State held on for a 50-49 win over Sam Houston State to claim the third annual Beach Classic title at the Walter Pyramid in December.

Clark, who graduated from BA in 2010, finished with 14 points, five rebounds and a career-high six assists in the championship game of the tournament, following up her season high 16 points, two rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals in the tournament’s opening game, an overtime victory over Canisius College.

Claiming the Beach Classic title gives the 49ers their first tournament win in 11 years, since winning the Big West tournament in 2001.

Ella, a 6’3″ forward, is averaging 8.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.7 blocks, on the season.
Asked if she was happy to be named MVP, she said, “I was always jealous of the people who got the prizes.”
