Captains Log: Match Reports from West Michigan WhiteCaps series.


Thank you to our friends at Lake County Captains Media Team, for the following match reports from the recent series against West Michigan Whitecaps. For some reaseon we have started off with the last match in the series first - blame it on a Monday morning. The Captains are currently one match into a 3 match series against Fort Wayne TinCaps, we will bring you that report later this week.

Hubbard and Lake County Win 7-4

The Lake County Captains (5-4, 36-42) used a three run opening inning to defeat the West Michigan Whitecaps (5-4, 42-37) by a final of 7-4. Alex Monsalve hit his team leading sixth homer of the season to cap the scoring in the first and it was a 3-1. Captains lead.

In the top of the first inning, when Chad Wright tripled to right center and trotted home when Edgar Corcino singled up the middle and it was a 1-0 Whitecaps lead. West Michigan got a run closer in the second inning when Zach Maggard hit a long homerun to left field and the score was 3-2 in favor of Lake County. The Captains answered the call in the bottom of the second when they pushed across a run and the score was 4-2 Lake County.

West Michigan inched closer once again in the top of the fifth inning, Chad Wright lifted a sacrifice fly to center field and a run scored making the ballgame a 4-3 Captains lead. In the bottom of the inning, Lake County got the run back. Jordan Smith doubled to begin the inning and raced around to score on an Alex Monsalve single and the score was 5-3 Captains headed to the sixth.

In the sixth, Aaron Westlake doubles and quickly came around to score when Lance Durham singled to center field and the score was 5-4 Lake County. The score remained a one run game until the eight inning when the Captains took advantage of two Whitecaps errors and the Captains scored two runs in the inning, only one was earned and Lake County led 7-4 heading to the ninth inning.

RHP Cody Anderson (4-4) took to the mound for Lake County, and did not get the decision. Anderson pitched three innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs and one homerun. Antwonie Hubbard (1-0) got the win, his first one in two seasons, after pitching two innings. Hubbard allowed two hits one earned run, a walk and two strikeouts. Hubbard missed all of 2011 with an elbow injury. Manny Carmona pitched two innings and gave up a run. Jeff Johnson earned his eleventh save of the season after pitching both the eighth and ninth innings.

RHP Marcelo Carreno (3-5) took the loss. Carreno pitched four innings, and allowed seven hits, four earned runs and allowed one homerun. He also struck out four on the night. The West Michigan bullpen combined for four innings of eight hit three run baseball. They also walked one and struckout two.

Whitecaps Rally Past Captains 4-2

The West Michigan Whitecaps (5-3, 42-36) used a two run eighth inning to defeat the Lake County Captains (4-4, 35-42) by a final of 4-2. West Michigan used an RBI single by Aaron Westlake and a sacrifice fly by Brandon Loy and the Whitecaps enjoyed a three run lead. The Captains record now falls to 10-30 when the opponent scores first in a ballgame.

West Michigan took the early lead in the second inning, Brandon Loy doubled to right field and then Jeff Holm singled him home and it was 1-0 West Michigan. The run scored with two outs. West Michigan made it a 2-0 game in the top of the sixth inning when Luis Castillo tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a single to right field by Aaron Westlake and West Michigan was up a pair, 2-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Francisco Lindor led off the inning with a double to left center field and advanced to third when the ball was bobbled in the outfield. With a runner at third and nobody out Luigi Rodriguez hit a ground ball to shortstop and Lindor scored from third and it was a 2-1 Whitecaps lead.

Lake County added a run in the ninth inning when Luigi Rodriguez doubled and later scored on a groundout to shortstop and the score was 4-2 West Michigan. That was the final score.

RHP Joe Colon (6-8) took to the mound for Lake County, and took the loss. Colon pitched five and two third innings, allowing six hits, two runs, both earned, and struck out four. Rob Nixon relieved Colon and pitched three and one third innings, and allowed three hits and two un-earned runs and one walk. Nixon also struck out three.

RHP Tommy Collier (6-5) got the nod for West Michigan, and earned the win. He pitched seven innings and allowed six hits, one un-earned, two walks and he struck out two. Slade Smith entered in relief for West Michigan, and pitched a scoreless eighth inning. In the ninth Dan Bennett entered the ballgame to close the game. Bennett allowed one earned run on two hits but earned his tenth save of the season.


Sabourin's Walk-Off Lifts Captains to a 9-7 Win

The Lake County Captains (4-3, 35-41) defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps (4-3, 41-36) by a score of 9-7 on Thursday night at Classic Park. In the ninth with two outs and two men on base Sabourin hit an opposite field homerun to left field and the Captains won the first game of the six game home stand by two runs.

The first inning was a big inning for both teams. In the top half of the inning, West Michigan scored four runs. In the top of the inning one error was committed there were two passed balls, a stolen base and a wild pitch and three base hits in the half inning. Aaron Westlake had a two run single in the inning and the Whitecaps took an early 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the frame, Lake County scored three runs. Lake County took advantage of one walk, one wild pitch, and one error to go along with two hits to score the runs. Jerrud Sabourin also chipped in a sacrifice fly and the score was 4-3 after one full inning of play.

The second inning was just as jam packed as the first. West Michigan scored three runs in the inning and stole one base and benefitted from one Captains error. The big hit in the inning came from Westlake again. Westlake deposited a base hit to right field and the score was 7-3 heading to the bottom of the second inning.

In the bottom of the second, Lake County scored a pair. West Michigan committed two errors in the inning and The Captains scored had two hits. The big hit in the inning was a RBI single by Jordan Smith. Through the first two innings, of the 12 runs scored only five were earned. The score was 7-5 West Michigan.

Lake County inched closer in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Leonardo Castillo, and Zach MacPhee hit back-to-back doubles and the score was 7-6 West Michigan.

LHP Elvis Araujo (2-6) took to the mound for Lake County, and pitched five innings, allowing six hits, seven runs, four were earned, two walks and six strikeouts Araujo did not get a decision. Luis Head (1-0) came in the ballgame, and pitched four innings, allowed just two hits and one strikeout. Head earned his first win in his first appearance with the Captains.

LHP Kyle Ryan (4-3) got the nod for West Michigan, and earned the win. Ryan threw five innings, allowed six hits, five runs one was earned, he walked one and struck out two. Nick Avila entered the game and pitched two and one third innings, two hits, one walk and one strikeout he also allowed one earned run. Jade Todd (1-1) pitched one and one third inning and allowed two hits, one walk and he struck out two. He gave up the three run homer to Jerrud Sabourin and took the loss.
