Newcastle Diamonds - Ludvig Lindgren 15 1, Stuart Robson 14
Somerset Rebels - Jason Doyle 14, Kyle Newman/James Wright 6

Top-placed Newcastle Diamonds met the equally high-powered, third placed Somerset Rebels in a vital Premier League clash at Brough Park last night with the home side looking to consolidate their pole position with another good solid home victory.

But the visitors also had success in the front of their minds with Jason Doyle jetting ahead to take a solid heat one win over Stuart Robson who held out Alex Davies in third for a Rebel's 2-4.

It was all square again after guest reserve from Berwick, Lubos Tomicek battled through the field on Heat Two to take an untroubled win with Steve Worrall losing a place to Kyle Newman on lap two in a home 4-2 taking the score to 6-all.

Ludvig Lindgren took the most amazing win of the season in Heat Four, chasing hard on Claus Vissing all race, diving hard on the Rebel's inside line, but on the last bend of the race the Diamond took an amazing lunge at the inside line, riding up the edge of the grass to make a superb last ditch pass and take the win in the 4-2 and put the Diamonds in front 13-11.

Christian Henry rode a tremendous four laps in Heat Five to take third place being last and second in a mammoth battle with fellow Aussie, Doyle and Davies in another Newcastle 4-2 to go four up.

Come Heat Seven and the home side started to turn the screws on the Rebels with Lindgren taking s dominant win with Worrall managing to hold out the current Premier League Riders' Champion Sam Masters in expert style to take a maximum home score and expand the gap to eight and after another home 5-1 from Robson and Henry dominantly over Vissing in Heat Nine to take the score to 33-21.

The Rebels used both their tactical rides for double points in the next two heats, but in the 10th Masters was easily rounded by both Robson and Nedermark to negate any advantage in the 5-1, but come Heat 11 Doyle made no mistake and shot away to lead and take a big win as part of a Somerset 2-7 which tightened the score to 40-29.

The Rebels were on a roll and took a 2-4 in Heat 13 with Masters making up for his tactical disaster with a massive win, although Henry saved matters by taking former Diamond Kyle Newman on the second lap to rescue a 2-4 to reduce Newcastle's lead to nine once more.

A fourth Lindgren win, again from a startling gate with Robson taking third despite challenging Doyle for second all the way, the 4-2 sealed the win for the Diamonds taking the score to 46-35 with only two races left to run.

***After the meeting Swede Lindgren went out in the second half to test and engine, but may have done more damage than it was worth as he was led off the track by the medical staff nursing a very sore right wrist for further examination.

After consulting the experts it would appear his wrist may well keep him out of action for a short time and it remains to be seen if a fitness test late in the week will permit him to race at Scunthorpe on Friday - or not.

Team manager George English said: "Things were looking a little dodgy early on in this match, but as Somerset are a class act there was no great surprise when they made life difficult for us but we really have a side built on team spirit and determination which pulled off a superb win that presented all three very important league points to our campaign.

"That was an excellent result and the lads should be proud of their achievement to keep us well on top of the league table, but of course now we have further injury worries and can only hope Ludvig will be fit for our next away match on Friday night."
