Captains Log: We return to Baseball at Lake County


Sports Pulse go Stateside and are back following baseball in the Minor Leagues. The Captains Log returns, following the Lake County Captains, a team affiliated with the Cleveland Indians, who play in the Midwest League Eastern. The Captains start the season with a 3 match series at Fort Wayne TinCaps. Thanks to the Media team at Lake County for allowing us to take reports in full. Game 1: Captains Win Season Opener 4-3

Luigi Rodriguez tripled home pinch runner Todd Hankins in the top of the ninth inning to give the Lake County Captains a 4-3 come from behind win over the Fort Wayne Tin Caps Thursday night.

The Captains scored a run in the top of the first when Francisco Lindor scored from third base on a wild pitch by Tin Caps starter Frank Garces and the Captains led 1-0. The Tin Caps answered in the bottom of the third inning when Austin Hedges walked and Alberth Martinez was hit by a pitch. Jace Peterson doubled them home and the Tin Caps took a 2-1 lead.

The Tin Caps scored another run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Travis Whitmore tripled and then scored on a single by Austin Hedges to increase the lead to 3-1. The Captains tied it up in the top of the eighth cut the lead in half when Luigi Rodriguez reached on a bunt single. He would score when LeVon Washington got a bunt single and a throwing error on the play allowed him to score. Washington would score on a passed ball and it was 3-3.

Captains starter Felix Sterling got a no decision working five innings and allowing two runs on only two hits, walking two while striking out four. Francisco Valera came on in the sixth inning and pitched two innings allowing one run on two hits, walking one and striking out two. Mason Radeke (1-0) got the win pitching two scoreless innings striking out two to close out the game.

Garces also did not factor in the decision pitching six innings allowing one unearned run on two hits, walking two while striking out nine. Colin Rea (0-1) took the loss allowing the only earned run by the Tin Caps pitching staff. He allowed two hits and struck out two.

Game 2: Big Inning Sinks Captains

The Tin Caps scored four runs in the bottom of the 6th inning en route to a 9-3 victory on Friday night at Parkview Field. The big blow in the inning was a base hit by Donavan Tate. His single plated two runs and gave the Tin Caps a 7-2. On the night, Tate had three RBI's with three hits.

The Captains scored a run in the top of the first when Francisco Lindor scored from third base on a RBI ground out by Jordan Smith. The Captains scored a run for the second night in a row in the opening frame, both times the run was unearned. The Captains led 1-0. The Tin Caps answered in the bottom of the third inning when Austin Hedges reached on an error and Alberth Martinez doubled down the right field line scoring Hedges from first. Donovan Tate broke the tie with a RBI single to left. The Tin Caps took a 2-1 lead.

The Tin Caps scored another run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jace Peterson doubled and then scored on a double play groundball. That run increased the lead to 3-1. The Captains cut the lead in half when Jordan Smith doubled home Alex Monsalve in the top of the sixth inning. That made the score 3-2.

Lake County added their final run to the board in the top of seventh on an RBI single by Smith. That was his second RBI on the night and at the time cut the lead to 7-3.

Fort Wayne tacked on two runs in the eighth inning off Captains pitcher Xavier De Los Santos making the score 9-3. A wild pitch and a hit batter accounted for both runs in the inning.

Captains' starter Elvis Araujo (0-1) got the loss working four innings allowing just two runs on only three hits, walking one while striking out seven. Cole Cook pitched one and a third innings allowing five runs four of which were earned on five hits, walking two and striking out two. Shawn Armstrong appeared in the game pitching 1.2 scoreless Innings with two strikeouts and two walks. Captains pitchers totaled 14 strikeouts throughout the game.

Tin Caps starting pitcher Adys Portillo did not factor in the decision pitching four innings allowing one unearned run, walking three while striking out four. Portillo did not allow a hit as he gave way to the eventual winning pitcher John Barbato (1-0). Barbato went two innings allowing just one unearned run striking out five and just walking two hitters. Robert Eisenbach, Luis De La Cruz and Matt Stites combined to close out the game by pitching a combined three innings and allowing just one unearned run. The Tin Caps also fanned 14 Captains' hitters in the game.

Game 3: Lake County Wins 9-1

The Captains had a big first inning on Saturday Night. LeVon Washington led off the game with an opposite field double off of the left field wall. Francisco Lindor then laid down a bunt single. Alex Monsalve walked to load the bases, and then Leonardo Castillo hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Washington from third. The bases were re-loaded for Alex Lavisky. Lavisky was hitting for the first time on the 2012 campaign. He broke his bat but got a base hit that got into left field plating two. That single made the score 3-0 Captains. Jerrud Sabourin also singled and drove home a run and made the score 4-0 Captains after a half-inning.

The Tin Caps answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Jace Peterson to left and then Donavan Tate singled home his Tin Cap teammate cutting the lead to 4-1. The Captains though were not done. In the top half of the second inning, with the bases loaded Leonardo Castillo singled home Washington. A passed ball allowed the Captains to push across another run and just like that it was 6-1 ball game. Lake County tacked on another before the end of inning taking a 7-1 lead into the third inning.

Lake County added another run in the top half of the forth inning. With two outs, Monsalve walked and came around to score on a double by Bryson Myles. In the sixth Luigi Rodriguez walked and came around to score on an error. The score stood at 9-1.
Captains starter Will Roberts (1-0) got the win working six innings allowing just one run on four hits, walking three while striking out two. Jordan Cooper relieved Roberts and went an inning allowed one base hit and also struck out one. Kyle Petter came in for some work and pitched the final two innings allowing just one base hit and striking out four.

Tin Caps starting pitcher Joe Ross (0-1) got the loss. Ross just lasted four outs Ross, a first round pick for the Padres in 2011, allowed seven runs, six of which were earned, seven base hits and he walked three and had just one strikeout. The Tin Caps bullpen combined to allowed two runs, one earned in seven and two thirds innings of relief.

The Captains (2-1) are off on Sunday and will resume play on Monday April 9th at, against the Great Lakes Loons in Midland, Michigan. The Captains will send Joe Colon (0-0,0.00) to the rubber against Gustavo Gomez. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm. The game can be heard on AM 1330 WELW and online at captainsbaseball.com.

The Captains will open the home season on Thursday April 12 at 6:30 PM at Classic Park. The Captains begin celebrating the start of their 10th season in northeast Ohio by welcoming the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Rays) to town.
