Tapes Up: Diamonds secure a last heat victory

Diamonds Take A Last Heat Nerve Tingling Victory Over Workington. Thanks to our friends at Newcastle Diamonds for providing the report.

Newcastle Diamonds 46
Workington Comets 44
(League Cup)

Workington Comets have a history of doing well at the Newcastle Diamonds and showed early on that they were once again on Tyneside to do business last night in the League Cup at Brough Park.

Following a Heat Two scorcher of a win from Richie Worrall in a home 4-2, their two point advantage was immediately reversed with a maximum 1-5 going to a determined ride from the gate for winner Adam Roynon with his skipper Rich Lawson tucking in to second over a lack-lustre Claes Nedermark and Ludvig Lindgren taking the score to 8-10.

Workington's number seven, Kyle Howarth has been coming on in leaps and bounds, as he demonstrated to great effect in Heat Four as he led early over top Diamond Stuart Robson and held the lead to the end for three points in a shared 3-3.

Last night's match also heralded the return to Brough Park of former Newcastle star, Dane Rene Bach now a Comet, and he showed he hadn't forgotten the swift lines by making an awful gate in Heat Five, but coming off the last bend took a sharp swoop round Nedermark to join Kenny Ingalls up front for another visiting 1-5 as Newcastle slipped to 12-18 behind.

Still six down after Heat Seven, Christian Henry and Richie Worrall went to the tapes but with Worrall and the two Comets biting the dust in a heap, all four were called back, but Kenny Ingalls was ruled out of the match with a shoulder injury. In the re-run the Diamonds took full advantage, jetting away to score an all-important 5-1 reducing the home sides' deficit to 23-25.

Mark Lemon and Henry levelled the match up at just the right time, taking a superb 5-1 well ahead of Roynon and the usually untouchable Lawson with the score now 30-30, but with Workington's reserve Howarth in such tremendous form that his big win along with Bach's second gave them a reversed 1-5 to again put the Comets in the lead 31-35.

Lawson regained his supremacy winning Heat 12 in style but with Howarth in second their 5-1 gave the Comets a fearful eight point lead, but a previously unimpressive Stuart Robson shot out to lead Heat 13 along side Lemon to secure a vital 5-1 of their own to haul Workington a little closer, 32-40 with two races to go.

Nedermark took a solid win in the 14th leaving the match on a knife edge, but Robson's form continued to blossom as he shot from the gate in the last race to win well, covered beautifully by Lemon behind for a match winning home maximum 5-1 ending the match 46-44.

Team manager George English said: "There were still a few weak points for us tonight but their determination and feverish work in the pits to get the best from the bikes paid off and we nicked a thriller of a win in the last heat.
Stuart Robson had a nightmare of a night mechanically and had to change his bike after every ride, finally getting the right set up for him, just when we needed it."
